If the transmission ground wasn't connected that would prevent it from cranking (the starter requires a ground and the engine block/trans is the only path to the battery) but if the engine isn't at a point where it will start and run you may not notice any other issues in the fault code/communication area.

The foot on brake requirement varies. For instance I had a US market 2010 GTI 2.0T that required you to hold the brake but the (nearly identical - NAR market) Canadian 2010 GTI equivalent did not. So, that depends on the installed controllers but as Nicolai explained you have several systems on that Powertrain CAN network and MVBs should help you confirm if signals are being received.

If you do not have the factory level wiring diagrams for the donor configuration and the actual vehicle configurations erWin would be the best bet. Official Factory Repair Information

Edit: I was distracted while drafting but based on that new scan this issue:

28775 - No Communication with Gear Selector Module
    U0103 - 000 -
... needs to be corrected. That's the controller that Nicolai mentioned, essentially a module in the shifter box that communicates on the Powertrain network. This TCM isn't going to receive a valid Park / Neutral signal until that is resolved so that alone will prevent it from cranking .. and even if you jumped the starter the car won't move until that is corrected.

Hi Dana, thanks for coming back to me so quickly, I figured out that the earth wasn't working or there when i tried a direct feed to the starter, to find it still wouldn't crank until I put a jump lead to the earth battery and onto the gearbox, then it cranked, but that was with a direct feed from battery to starter,so starter s ok

I tried the erwin but to be honest i don't no what I'm looking for on there(I must be a bit thick!!!!)

I'm sure this is something to do with the wire loom I've made, and also the key release must be to do with the wire loom, this is why I've asked if anyone knows or has a diagram for the dsg loom, I've had to pick up the can high and low in this loom I've made along with other areas and point where I've had to join or place pins in blocks on the steering ecu and the ecm with the 3 blocks (black, white , and brown/qold) and fuse box, but I just don't no where I've gone wrong,

This is the exact error, I mentioned in my last post. This error means, that the control module for the DSG is not able to determine the position of the gear selector module. This error will need to be rectified before the DSG will be operational.

While you managed to solve the many issues with the CANbus (Drive), which is very good, this is a potential issue in relation to the DSG as well. It should not prevent cracking over, but it could result in the DSG box going into limp-home mode, if it's unable to recieve a proper speed-signal from the car.

These faults suggest that the donor vehicle had an alarm system fitted, the errors pertain to the interior motion sensor for theft alarm, and the inclination sensor used to activate the vehicle alarm in case of the vehicle being attempted towed away. You also have a subsystem configured for the alarm. I can't determine if you have the alarm system in your "new" car and didn't mount it yet, or if you don't. If you don't, simply decode the features.

009 - Open or Short to Ground
This fault should be minor, but could potentially disturb the DSG as well, as the lock is used by the DSG to ensure the vehicle ignition key is only removed from the ignition lock when in an approved state, i.e. in N or P. I think the car should crack over without it, but I would still look into this as well, as the DSG could refuse operation over not being able to secure the ignition. I don't think it will do it, but it is possible.

The text there could suggest that there is a communication error to the control module. This could result from the missing ABS controller, but could also be a separate issue. An example; if you revert polarity on a single control units CAN bus connection, you will see that text, instead of the usual "No faults found - end off". This text atleast indicates to me that while it does say that no faults are found, the controller (or communication to it) is not operating properly.

Don't be too concerned with this - there is a reasonable chance that this will resolve itself by completing basic adaptation of the sensor, which is basically to drive a short way in the car turning left and right first, and then going straight. You'll be able to find an accurate description online easily, when the time comes for you to perform the adaptation (requires the car to be driveable).

As Dana also said, you'll need to rectify the error with the DSG Selector Position Sensor before anything else. If it still fails, I would look at fixing the ignition lock error, and I would definately look into making the ABS controller operatable, and check the AWD for errors more thoroughly.

For this purpose, I would (partially) read SSP308 - Volkswagens Self Study Program for the DSG E02 box, which describes the system. You can find this easily on Google in PDF format. You're looking for the Selector Lever Sensor Control Unit J587, which is mounted on the right lower side of (in) the gear selector. It consists of a large printboard and a control box. The ignition key lock is also described herein (N376). I believe these two faults must be solved before the DSG will operate in the slightest. When these are solved, you should (again) be able to monitor with measuring blocks with only igniton on/engine off, and verify that you are seeing correct function of all components. When you do so, I would personally look into ABS and AWD, in regards to whether or not it's "safe" to let the engine crank over.

EDIT: While I posted this, you ask Dana what you're looking for in ErWin. The above mentioned identification numbers (J587 and N376) are used as identifyers in ErWin as well.

    Best of luck,
    Nicolai

many thanks for all that, the in alarm and incline sensor are just not connected, ie a switch in the drivers door card,Im sure its this loom I've made as like i said i had to pick up on the can high and low wires, and i was worried that it mattered where i i connected to the 2 can wires, do you think this matters,

    In short; YES!

CAN connections are both sensitive to polarity (high/low) and to being connected in the proper location, i.e. to the correct CAN bus. I don't know if you already know, but just in case, I'll clarify that your vehicle contains a number of CAN busses, like Drive (Antrieb), Comfort (radio, and stuff), Infotainment (in some cases), and Diagnostic, and also a number of local busses made of both CAN and LIN protocols.

A bus is basically different from traditional wiring in the sense that where you would normally need one or two wires to each component, with a bus, you use the same two wires for every component, and instead use components that can tell the bus system who they are (an ID) as well as what they want to say (a message/telegram). Bus systems are relevant in applications where you build many features. Rather than applying insane amounts of wires, one or two for every little feature, you now use data from fewer components in more locations, and you use less wiring.

Due to the complexity of cars, more bus "lines" are added. This is due to the bus being able to transmit telegrams at a certain rate/speed. This speed can be adequate for say 100 telegrams per minute, but if the same bus had to carry 1000 telegrams per minute, it would fail. Thus, the systems are split into important and not important systems. Like Drive Bus vs Comfort Bus.

In addition to that, there are local busses, for instance the bixenon headlamps have a bus from the ALWR / AFS controller to each headlight, and the controller has another bus to the CAN bus gateway in the car. Should you for instance connect something in the wrong location/wiring pin on the AFS controller, you could risk talking on a line between headlamp and controller, rather than to the rest of the car.

The CAN bus gateway gathers and interfaces all of the "main" CAN busses in the car, using something called Filter Tables, which basically decides which communications go through and which doesn't. So for instance, if you hook up VCDS, you do it in the diagnostic connector, and onto the diagnostic CAN bus. There are very few filter restrictions (obviously), as you need to be able to talk to everything. So maybe you can talk to a control module perfectly, but the car can't because it's placed on the wrong bus. For example, if you in error put a control module on the comfort bus, and it should have been on the drive bus, then you can talk to it with VCDS, but other control modules in the car can't, because the module is not where it is supposed to be, so the traffic is routed and blocked incorrectly.

So yes, the polarity and the correct choice of bus is important.

Yes I understand, the wires are all colour coded on the can gateway , the ones I needed to connect to for the dsg was one orange and brown and the other orange and black, I cut my old wire loom up to trace and see where all these wires wheat, and they all came to 1 or 2 points where they where joined together, joined with an alloy crimp joint, so I have jointed into the right colour coded wires, just maybe not where the where done from factory,

When I go isn't gearbox I can see its in P and that's what the clusters say, it's in park, and when pressing the paddles it shows them activated when pressing, dose this mean there is something communicating somewhere along the lines, I'm going to go through the loom I made and double Cheka, but I've done this twice before, I know this was a challenge when buying it,

Just sorted the gearbox fault out,, now shows no faults found, I'll put a scan up when laptop has charged enough, but still no crank, but like you said , I could communicate with the abs, ie perform brake bleed,
