Hi All,
Hoping someone can help with a fault on my wife's Golf as can't find much on the net (that makes sense to me anyway). She was complaining that the heater wasn't hot and only luke warm air blowing out (outside temp is around -2 at the moment). I reset the flaps which seemed to resolve the issue.

I then ran a scan and found codes in the HVAC area however when cleared they just come back straight away. Any help would be gratefully received.

It's a TDI. It doesn't produce much engine heat, especially not very quickly after starting up. But it does have an auxiliary electric ("PTC") heater.

The fault codes you have there indicate the HVAC module is reducing the PTC heater output due to requests from the BCM and the ECU respectively. In the first one, the cause is pretty clear: Terminal 30 voltage is only 11.5V and the car doesn't want to pull the battery down lower. The cause for the second where the ECU making the request with the terminal 30 voltage at 14.0V one does not have an obvious (to me) cause.

Does this car have a start/stop system?

I'll note that it's a 2014 model. How old is the battery?

Did you know it's also possible with cold temps like that, the flow of water pump maybe inadequate due to impeller slipping slightly and enough to not push hot coolant through the heater core high point, however, indeed through the engine?

Additionally did you know a leaky cooling system or expansion tank on suction side or from crack or cap oring failure could also be responsible?


Did you look at expansion tank for flow of coolant, at idle compared to under loaded throttle?

Hi Uwe,
Many thanks for the reply. The heater is now working fine since I re-calibrated the flaps. The battery is the original on the car from what I can tell so could be contributing to the problem but the car starts and drives fine even at the low temps we are experiencing in the UK at the moment. The only thing I have done fairly recently is changed 2 glow plugs as they failed and registered a glow plug code fault. I only picked this up as my wife told me it was a bit lumpy at start up but ran fine after a couple of minutes. I changed the plugs and its been fine ever since.

Thanks for the reply. The water levels are fine and the temp on the car stays rock steady once up to temp. It seems to warm up quite quickly but it is due a cam belt change so will get the pup done as a matter of course at the same time. I drive a Touran and that is OK in low temps and is pretty much the same as the golf but not sure if it has the electric heater that Ewe referred to.

My Snap On edge also reported the same faults so still not sure what the root cause of the issue it without starting to replace loads of parts and hope I get lucky. :-(

I will check the cooling system and o rings ect in more detail at the weekend when I have some daylight as its dark too and from work at the moment.

The temp gauge is massively buffered, and even when reading 90C, it can be just 75C. The PTC heater adds quite a bit of the warmth during the warm-up phase of the engine - the lack of PTC output is very noticeable.

While it's never that cold here, the PTC heater in my R32 powered Touran allows the engine to heat much faster, as the heat isn't sucked out of the engine so much by the heater... and I suspect my R32 lump heats up 10X faster than a 1.6 TDI :D

If you start the engine cold, and set the heater to full hot, you should notice warmth in about 30 seconds, if the PTC is working - it doesn't get super hot, but it really helps : Mine initially draws nearly 80 amps! So I can understand the load management wanting to control it!

As Uwe alluded - it may be time for a new battery to keep the management system happy.

I'm not sure "buffered" is the right way to describe the behavior of VAG's coolant temperature gauges. The simply lie by displaying 90°C (or 190°F) over wide range of temperatures. They've been that way for several decades, and the behavior is designed in, to keep customers from complaining that the coolant temperature is poorly regulated.

I'll try the battery as a first port of call. The car does seem to warm up quickly even in the cold temps so will get a new battery as a matter of course and at least eliminate it as a cause. Does the PTC heater come on even if the engine is already up to temperature ? ......I would have thought it was was an unnecessary use of energy if it did.

The codes came back after clearing as soon as i stopped and restarted the engine even though it was up to operating temperature.

Ok, thanks Allan, I'll have a go at checking the coolant temp directly and see what transpires. I've ordered a battery tester to load and check the battery before I replace it. My wife tells me that the car is driving fine and the heater is OK so will do a bit more investigation over the next couple of weeks. I'f I fix it I'll report back here.
