    Old VW lupo airbag module issues ?

    Howdy Folks,

    looking at an old 2002 VW Lupo with an airbag module issue. The original module was water damaged and showing 65535 and other hardware fault codes, so a second hand module with same part no. 1C0 909 601 but different index no. (02 vs. original 04) was sourced. With this module, all faults were cleared except a new one appeared - 01299 - Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533) 49-00 - No Communications. So the wiring was checked and the CAN bus was present at the connector, however there is very little activity on the bus when checked with a 'scope - apart from what looks like a request packet every few seconds. With the old airbag module back in, there is no activity on the bus at all. So it looks like the replacement airbag module is actually generating the request, and since there is no activity after that, it looks like its not getting an answer from any other control module. Now this car is very basic, and actually the only items physically on the CAN bus are the engine ECU, the instruments and the airbag module (the car has no ABS). And the gateway (J533) is part of the cluster. The cluster receives all of its signals via hardwired connections, so it looks like it would not need CAN for the engine, and the airbag module itself has a hardwired connection for the dash warning lamp and crash signal. so it would not need CAN either (proven by disconnecting the CAN wires from the cluster). all modules have diagnostics via the K-line to pin 7 of the diag connector.

    The coding of the two airbag modules is different, and I cannot change the coding on the replacement airbag module to match the old one - in VCDS it looks like the coding is accepted (the coding window disappears - no error message) but the coding remains the same. Also, I couldn't find any information on the coding of these modules. ERWIN doesn't seem to have any info either apart from some info for coding the gateway J533, which it seems is not accessible on this car - however the coding info I did find would suggest that you could tell it what modules are installed. We also checked the cluster to see if there were any coding options there, and there are options for different engines and country etc, but nothing to enable / disable CAN etc.

    just to be sure, we obtained another airbag module with exact same part no. and index no. as the original, however the same code still remains. (and the coding is again different - this module came from a 1U mk1 octavia).

    I could change the cluster to see if this will solve the issue, but these are like hens teeth now and buying anything new would make the car an economic write off, so I wanted to see if there is anything I am missing.. perhaps there is an undocumented login code for the airbag modules, and also maybe the gateway J533 should be accessible and its lack of communication would indicate a problem with the cluster.

    it seems as if this car is a halfway house between the time CAN came into use and when they stopped using individual wires for each signal. The fact that everything else works without CAN is a pointer.

    auto scan posted here with one of the replacement airbag modules, although I note it is missing the cluster for some reason (I will post again if needed).

    On airbag modules like this, there is precisely one coding that they will accept, and it depends on the index.

    Airbag modules like this must be specified by part number and index.

    The module in your scan has an index of "01T".

    If the coding of a used replacement module is different than the original, then the index is also different.

    Please provide a scan of the original module.

    Have you checked continuity/integrity of the CAN bus wiring from the airbag module to wherever it goes?

    Hi Uwe,

    Thanks for reply. I know the coding is different even on the second one we got.. I have verified the CAN wiring to all of the modules it goes to, namely the instruments, airbag module and engine ECU. all looks ok. I will put the original module back and get an auto scan but I know the original module index was "1R" or "01R" - coding 12626. Its difficult to find these as these codes aren't on the labels externally. This being the case its probably going to have to be a new module or one out of an exact same poverty spec lupo..

    Well, the correct replacement.

    The old one is 1C0 909 601 /01R

    It's entirely possible that it has been superseded.
