When I worked for a sports car manufacturer we designed all our electrical/electronic systems to cope with what became know as a "US Dockside Start" where if one of our cars had a flat battery after the sea journey they would connect a truck (i.e. designed for 28V battery systems) starter to the car which had a 12V battery system

At some point, someone at the dealership was in a big hurry and used one that I wouldn't. Look at this fault code in the radar module at address 13:

    Code:
1391 - Function Restricted due to Excessive Voltage
              U1401 00 [008] - -
              [FAULT_VBAT_BUSMON_HIGH]
Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
                 Freeze Frame:
                        Fault Status: 00000001
                        Fault Priority: 6
                        Fault Frequency: 1
                        Reset counter: 41
                        Mileage: 34 km
                        Date: 2019.11.12
                        Time: 00:03:55

                        Control Module temperature: 14 °C
                        Voltage terminal 15: 17.9 V

If it were mine (and I wasn't constantly doing VCDS software testing, where having lots of fault codes is a desirable thing), I would clear them all and to get a fresh start.

    Thank you guys.

Now here is the dumbest million dollar questions... how do I clear all of those old codes?

    Edit:

Just found this post. Will have to do these and then I'll post the new auto scan.

But I don't think we have that in VCDS-Mobile at the moment, or if we do, I can't find it either!

Did those cars even have electronics?

psu: Isn't it amazing what a complete story Uwe can create from a simple (and incomplete) auto-scan? I'm pea-green with envy- I hope one day to be able to see these patterns.

Anyhow, hagiography notwithstanding - I'd like to invite that you consider an alternative way forward given the state of your dubie battery and it's checkered history as recounted in Uwe's tale of woe.

If you look at your question as a simple risk management problem, it would not be unreasonable to deduce that your dubie battery is likely to have been seriously compromised at the hands of unscrupulous (or at the very least, woefully ignorant) battery torturers! How much battery health remains is an unknown - but this piece of kit is fairly important to the car's running.

So - back to the underlying risk management decision: do you want to economize and extract the remaining life from the tortured battery - or do you want to get rid of the entire question of how unreliable the tortured battery might be?

Personally, I favor the latter approach - life's too short to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery. Buy a newie - I suggest and consider the subsequent cost to be a long term saving!!

My experience with such things is that it's impossible to predict. I've had batteries that were run down as dead as that one, which seemed none the worse for the wear and went on to serve for another five or six years, while others that were never the same afterward. If it were my car, I would try to keep tabs on the battery's health somehow. This being 2019 car, I was going to suggest pulling battery history data from it, but unless I'm blind, I don't see a BMS in this car.

Don't MQB cars' Gateway keep battery history data? I'm pretty sure I've retrieved one from my Octavia 3 some time ago, which is MQB based..

This Golf (BQ), has PR-Code 7L3 (Without start-stop system without regenerative braking) and has no "Control unit for battery monitoring"
Coding for CAN Gateway, Byte 0 Bit 1 is not active.
    So no History.

Yes as well as bought in engine management ECU and ABS there were numerous "special" modules that me & my team designed and had manufactured locally.

Uwe: ... that's the thing about defining this particular problem as a "risk management decision": everyone has the same information about the problem, we all have our different views about the preferred way forward, and ALL of our different views are equally valid! It's only after we "take a position" and with the fullness of time that we get to find-out if we were correct!!
