    2019 Golf R - "Starting Map..."

    I was enabling windows w/ remote, driving school mode, disabled seat belt chime and attempted to disable all the screens about "this function not available while vehicle in motion..."

    I noticed today that the map in my MFD is gone.



    Also noticed that this toggle switch is now inactive:



    Any ideas?

    First, please post-up a current, unedited copy of an auto-scan for the car

    Second, I'm not sure if you are aware, but VCDS keeps a record of every change that you make with your dongle/cable device. Assuming that you use the release version of VCDS (i.e. not the Beta version), go to the c:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug directory on the laptop that you use and there should be AdpLog.CSV and CodingLog.CSV files in this directory (ignore the Readme.TXT. file - it's proof that Uwe has a sense of humor! )

    May I invite that you open both of these files and study the records. Confirm in particular that the changes that you intended to make in your tweaks are actually the changes that were made. The records show the previous values - so revert any modifications that were made in error.

    EDIT: hmm...... thanks for posting the scan report. Looks like a "dubie" battery (local term - meaning "dubious" battery) in the auto-scan! Please charge battery, clear DTC s and re-post. Also incomplete scan - so can't see the hex5F module

    17 Adaptations

    Display Depiction - Change to Version 1

    5F Byte 22 - Bit 0 unchecked.

    When I went back out to do the auto scan, it was working! Crisis averted for now.

    In my auto scan, I'm seeing a lot of error messages. Is that normal?

    Thanks for the tip on the c:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debbug as well.

    I just read about that in another thread... so much to learn.

    Early to mid November of last year, when the car had around 34-35 km on the odometer, the battery was allowed to go hideously flat. Even if it's working OK now, I would guess that took years off its life. I suppose this happened before psu actually took delivery of the car? And that his selling dealer is yet another one who didn't do a proper pre-delivery inspection? There's a lot of that going around. Dealers seem to have no shame anymore.

    I think it would be useful if psu would post a complete scan, preferably one that was done after the mess of fault codes from November had been cleared and the ignition had been cycled.

    Whew.. that's a bit unnerving to read.

    As I've said 100 times, I'm still learning all this but after reading your response, I went back and looked at the coding and put two and two together.

    I took delivery 12/26 and I see my TPMS light was logged as well. It popped on as I was getting home.

    So where do I go from here? Charge the battery and start clearing codes?

    psu: Isn't it amazing what a complete story Uwe can create from a simple (and incomplete) auto-scan? I'm pea-green with envy- I hope one day to be able to see these patterns.

    Anyhow, hagiography notwithstanding - I'd like to invite that you consider an alternative way forward given the state of your dubie battery and it's checkered history as recounted in Uwe's tale of woe.

    If you look at your question as a simple risk management problem, it would not be unreasonable to deduce that your dubie battery is likely to have been seriously compromised at the hands of unscrupulous (or at the very least, woefully ignorant) battery torturers! How much battery health remains is an unknown - but this piece of kit is fairly important to the car's running.

    So - back to the underlying risk management decision: do you want to economize and extract the remaining life from the tortured battery - or do you want to get rid of the entire question of how unreliable the tortured battery might be?

    Personally, I favor the latter approach - life's too short to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery. Buy a newie - I suggest and consider the subsequent cost to be a long term saving!!
