Backstory---

VW GTI 2.8L AFP. Multiple owners, son has owned for almost five years. Has had head gasket replacement twice now. Once when we bought it (known issue), and again when he had electrical issues (ignition coil) when in California (wish I was close enough to help). Sent to reputable VW shop while he was deployed. They had hard time finding the issue and suspected ECM. Problem seemed to disappear.

Present problem---

Engine cut off on him after coming off highway. Will not restart. I suspect the ECM is finally done. I will check compression. Cranks just fine.

Deployed still active?

Send it to me after you confirm it is dead okay?

Did you verify power and grounds at ECU and why it failed?

JPPSG yet?

What is your sons MOS?

VIN #?

Pictures of ECU disassembled for visual inspection of damage please?

The ECU is clearly off-line. Check engine light doesn't light up with key on the on position, right?

But I agree with Jack; check powers and grounds to ECU first before condemning it.

Update.

No aftermarket, except radio and running 225 45 ZR17 on Corsca wheels.

Found 15 amp fuse broken in fuse 29 on side fuse panel on drivers side.

Replaced. Vehicles starts and runs.

Took another scan and am curious why ECM is intermittent, and focus on repairing problems such as radiator fans on constantly from moment key is turned to 10 minutes after shut off.

Excellent!

Why did fuse blow and did you know firmware is needed?
Are ECT values and after run fan switch in failure or stuck static?
What are status of each consumer with amperage draw monitored?

Please reset faults and post a new scan and is FOD modified tuning present masking a stack entry?

Since the CAT is in sporadic error, what are OXS oxygen sensors/heaters status?

Jack,

You gonna make my agent orange act up. When I was in the fleet I used to hammer the communicators in my unit and subordinate units who failed to properly ground their equipment and complained their equipment wasn't working. Let alone my own maintenance community for failing to ensure proper bonding when repairing and returning equipment to a ready for use state. The value of a good grounding plane is underestimated. We have a much older TM in the Marine Corps, but the information is identical.

Hey Tubes
Who knows grounds and FOD?

NostraJackASS knows grounds, however, does not know everything or new possible lurking FOD!

Didn't know firmware was needed. I assume I go to VW dealer and they do it? probably charge me one hour rate.

Been a while since I ran coolant values. Will take car for a trip around the block tomorrow with my son afterwork and ensuring we get to operating temps. I did simulate the replacement of the new afterun switch without pulling the old switch out to see if this would change anything, however there was no difference in how the vehicle reacted when I hooked up new switch to the existing plug (simply pulled plug from sensor in the vehicle and plugged it in to a new sensor leaving it hanging not touching anything). Did not turn vehicle on, but as soon as I put key in engine off position the fan came right on as usual.

New scan posted below. We have never modified the ECM ourselves, but as stated, I wonder if there is a FOD modified tuning. I assume this might be undone and it might be worth sending this to you. He has access to my vehicles for work so I am convincing him to pull ECM and send to you.

Since I reset, readiness is not set. I will check Ox sensor and heaters tomorrow as well.

Thanks for the guidance and suggestions.

10-4 send it in and as aforementioned whatever you want sir.

Did you check WD for fan circuits yet to familiarize or know that fan is controlled by its own controller and maybe it is receiving a call from cluster, climate control or ECU?

Did you check that PSI switches for AC or high temp switch on coolant flange and not just radiator?

Tubes

10-4 send it in and as aforementioned whatever you want sir.

Did you check WD for fan circuits yet to familiarize or know that fan is controlled by its own controller and maybe it is receiving a call from cluster, climate control or ECU?

Did you check that PSI switches for AC or high temp switch on coolant flange and not just radiator?

It is funny how JPPSG mentions cause and effect. I have ignored the AC as this is a comfort item (no refrigeration and never worked), yet it seems to be having the effect on fans staying on. New FCM, radiator fan control switch, new large fan and radiator.

Funny thing is I bet there is an issue with 30 B+. Got this next quote from your Ebay store as I was browsing your products and work
"In many instances terminal 30 B+ ( voltage all the time ) burns down in a flood condition car. This damages the harness connectors spring retention, causing sporadic conditions and even may blow a fuse due to poor connectivity."

Although we don't know the past history, but assume since the title is not salvage, it has not been in a flood.

I had it in my garage for a while when he shipped it from Cali when he moved out here earlier this year. That's when we replaced radiator, front wheel bearings and a few other items... Should have looked into the ECU harness and 30 B+. I did not know that kind of effect it could have.

Tubes

PS when I first came in back in 1990, there were a few RT 505's hanging around our shop with tubes in the A1 transmit module.

There is a reason that fuse blew and my money is on OXS oxygen sensors due to heaters but anything on the bus could do it or water corrosion bridge too, right?

Don't you just love when a corrosion bridge from terminal 15 allows for a car to be started then back feeds the 15 and won't shut down when cycling key off?

Video reminds me of time in Okinawa, Japan. Although it was too small of an island to go that fast. It would take the length of the video to get from north to south supposing you had minimal traffic.

We will replace OSB and I'll look at MAF.
