Originally vehicle wouldn't start when cold unless GP's warmed up for a long time and several times had to recharge system, so the journey of discovery began.

-Replaced GlowPlugs and wiring ** still hard to cold-start (That was only $1600, yikes!)
-Told by garage I could have a bad injector ** I decided that could wait, didn't want to spend another 2 grand just yet
-bought VCDS, scanned and found Camshaft Position Sensor (G40) and a couple minor HVAC flap motors "No or incorrect Basic Setting"; however, I watched voltage of both batteries while starting and found 2yr old battery under seat was bad so I replaced it. (2yr old trunk battery still strong), ** car started fine now in cold... and I cleared all the codes

Ahh, so I thought problem solved, right? well, Kinda...

-A few days later, the car now decided to throw a flashing GP light, then check engine light and "Workshop" message so I scanned it again ** results below next paragraph

This is what I know about the vehicle:
-DPF delete done about 10,000 miles ago
-Aftermarket GPS/Backup Camera/XM Stereo system put in about 15,000 miles ago
-Address 16 (Steering/Wheel) makes VCDS hang or freeze, so I can't read that
-What I believe is the problems below are generally all "intermittent" so that leads me to believe it is an electrical problem and could be related to radio or the DPF delete "reflash?".. if that is a thing?
-I am just not sure where to start. This is my daughter's college ride and currently finances are tight, so I have zero desire to fix something that can go unfixed. On the same hand, I don't want systemic problems or safety reliability issues to go unaddressed. I do have thoughts, but will yield to wiser heads.

Please help any any way.. Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome OP to the VCDS forum.....

V10 TOW RIG but fiances are tight and with deletes, sorry I don't happen to feel bad for you at all?

Do you think G40 or other codes you possibly don't see due to deletes are an issue, what about timing commencement or carbon not permitting air from flap error & into rich fuel environment during cold start?

Time to RTFB and JPPSG + evaluate if this is a feasible car for a kid in school, huh?

If it were mine, I'd hunt down and fix the G40 problem. I don't think it has anything to do with the tune/flash or the radio.

This is my daughter's college ride

Please don't think this in red above, okay Uwe, here is why?

Did you know that "Tunes" indeed in V10 Tow-Rigs or other PD type engines, experience & have been known to cause a cold start problem widespread it seems & if the tuner adds fuel to all maps especially at crank start up & since it cools the chambers and diesel engines start from heat of compression hence the extended glow periods needed?

Did you know a block heater or coolant circulation heat element will cure that too & only if plugged in?

Correct expression! :p

OP do you have diesel fuel in oil for smell indication & possibly leaky injectors too & that would help or exacerbate this starting issue?

Indeed fixing G40 and the intake flap are advised if in fault, did you check fuses and wires yet in WD and with DVOM?

Hello and welcome OP to the VCDS forum.....

V10 TOW RIG but fiances are tight and with deletes, sorry I don't happen to feel bad for you at all?

Do you think G40 or other codes you possibly don't see due to deletes are an issue, what about timing commencement or carbon not permitting air from flap error & into rich fuel environment during cold start?

Time to RTFB and JPPSG + evaluate if this is a feasible car for a kid in school, huh?

Thanks for the welcome....

I was basically given this vehicle by a family member so I have no choice for another option for my daughter. Everything on it was done by a prior owner. I'm just trying to keep it going for another couple of years.

No problems starting now after the new under-seat battery. I have done a lot of forum searching both here and other forums and also talking to a local VW mechanic, G40 shouldn't be a big problem, but eventually like to find out reason for code. I plan on checking the carbon buildup on the flap as soon as I can, but the electrical issues are my biggest concern. They may likely be causing a short battery life?

Thanks for your replies, I will try and check fuses and wires, but I don't have a WD and I don't know what DVOM is?

I will post a solution when I figure it out... Thanks again

DVOM = Digital Volt Ohm Meter

Ever consider that, that vehicle has a pretty good resale value for enthusiasts and would most likely pay for a much newer car maybe even under warranty that your daughter could drive, unless has sentimental value?

Like a buy back TDI Jetta or Golf?

Couldn't OP wire radio to 12 volt terminal 15 and install a rechargeable 12 volt battery with diode to allow it to maintain radio memory and never discharge the vehicle battery using termination resistor on gateway to go sleepy times?
Just another NostraJackASS dumb idea right?

Strangely on V10s, the throttle body code can cause the flashing GP light along with the CEL. Like most of these units, they can wear gears or a bushing for an arm internally that causes a discrepancy between how far the motor is moving to reach its end points vs. what the position sensor is reporting. Generally replacing the offending unit and clearing codes will fix that.

Will definitely want to look into the cam position code as well. I don't have specs on what the resistance should be between pins. On the harness side, it would appear according to the diagram provided by Jack that power and ground to the sensor is provided by pins 2 and 3. The diagram does not make it obvious which is power and ground, and both appear to originate from the ECU. But if you were to probe pins 2 and 3 with the key on, you should get your voltage reference signal. Unsure on if it is 5.0V or 12V on this exact engine, though.

Also, for whatever it's worth, only bank 1 has a cam sensor. Bank 1 being the right side/passenger side of the car.

And now I'm just gonna post my appreciation of Jack's illustrations on the diagram, in particular the stargate/wormhole reference for continuation tracks. lol

Jack, Interesting idea about a rechargeable battery...

Been a busy Christmas break for us. Daughter going back to school next week so I'm trying to find a warm garage to tear into the radio and inspect/clean Intake Flap first.

I found a pile of documentation for the vehicle and looks like radio unit was put in early 2017... and a few months later the backup camera. Both front and rear batteries were replaced in Nov 2017... the underseat battery really only lasted a year because the starting problem began last year and then seemed fine over the summer so I didn't make the connection until this year when I looked into it.

Who knows what kind of 'wiring' the kids at the radio store did? I'm guessing there was some "find a hot wire and splice it" kinda work. With the codes showing "intermittent" I'm leaning toward an intermittent grounding issue, but won't know until I check.

I can tear motors apart and understand things quickly, but my background isn't electrical so I'm a like a kid walking around in a crowd of adults... a little confused, slightly scared and partially lost.

Thanks everyone for the ideas/help. I will keep you all posted.
