PS: We don't have such things on our letter-boxes down here - but I notice the top part is missing the "little flag" that I've seen so often in US television shows. I never quite understood the purpose of the flag (perhaps to indicate the position of the letterbox to the postman- Shirely not?) but given the bells-and-whistles on your creation, why not include one - perhaps?
The flag, when raised, indicates to the post man that you have placed out-going mail in the box for him to pick up.

Thanks Don........yeah red flag is there, it's too tell the USPS to stop and pickup post inside to ship out when the flag is UP!

Okay measure offset from base & drill hole in pipe & weld nut on using bolt to center and with good heat penetration.

IMG-20191214-162457.jpg

Cute and shape scrap square stock in prior photos to inside diameter of pipe.

IMG-20191214-164010.jpg

Drill other hole and establish center-line to verify threads using scrap VAG Hex 10MM bolt!

IMG-20191214-164610.jpg

WARNING!
Don't ever work like this unless you are willing to pay the price of injury!
Keep in mind like an asshole, I'm working very confident and dangerous, sort of like working circuits HOT!
This thing is so well balanced I'm doing all free hand including welding in my arrogance, this is the way of the Majestic!

IMG-20191214-164823.jpg

Mock up strut mount offset again more old junk being re-purposed! I insist on leaving the dust and grime from spirit of the parts useful too! :p

IMG-20191214-164903.jpg

Now we are getting dangerous with confidence BALANCE maintained bitch!

Calculating offset and Bolt to consider.

IMG-20191214-165204.jpg

Yup this is it gonna go for the welder, that's what lock and wave washers are for!

IMG-20191214-165329.jpg

IMG-20191214-165844.jpg

More BALANCE mount rotor time.

IMG-20191214-170104.jpg

LANDED WITH IMPACT!

IMG-20191214-170151.jpg

TURN IT OVER!

IMG-20191214-170348.jpg

TEST!

^^^^ I didn't know that !! So in America, the postman picks-up mail as well as delivers it? What a great idea - and all done with a simple semaphore.

Why doesn't Australia post do the same thing (rhetorical question)?

We have that in NZ, though it's only a "thing" in rural areas - Urban folk generally don't have flags.

True here as well, although I believe if you catch the mailman on his rounds and have outgoing mail that he reasonably can take, he must.

Hand truck up too test fit location.....

Looks like I'm gong to get another rotor and make an inverted base plate with some cement for the final install.

I'm in tears, laughing. Oh my god... this is brilliant.
Jack, did you seriously over-over-over engineer a mailbox? Seriously?

LOL

I had too, it's therapeutic and I think it has some practicality.

Cars have been boring and the news in the industry or news in general is just so negative.

While I was hand trucking it back in a few minutes ago......... I started thinking, maybe I should just put it up when I want mail and bring it in at night.

The dam snow is coming again tonight, but at least the state plow truck can't get what isn't there right now.

michel: Like my therapist, I'm sure Jack will permit a slightly deranged Antipodean his undisciplined mental meanderings - but I can't help thinking that Jack might have a second job as a design engineer at ACME enterprise!!!

Jack: no offense intended but for some reason this came to mind - does a small furry creature who is fond of eating carrots drive the offending snowplow?

Don

PS: I do like your welds - I'm green with envy (I wish I could weld like that - I'm a hopeless welder)!!

^^^^ Jack: Your video link reminded me that my two best-est characters ever in cartoons was originally Wile E. Coyote (when I was young) and later in life, Kenneth "Kenny" McCormick of South Park fame.

As I get older I'm also reminded that I want to be just like both of them - because they never die!!;)

Update to base rotor config built process, fasteners & in ground to be set at dusk.

I'm thinking about this.......

IMG-20191228-154359.jpg

Yup lets weld it

IMG-20191228-154740.jpg

Okay lets add some studs welded in and time to other rotor + Balance

IMG-20191228-162544.jpg

That box next to rotor was cookies from Mike...... Thanks Mike!

Okay now lets cut studs .......

IMG-20191228-163431.jpg

Time to lug the water and quickcrete to the road and check parameters for camber or is it toe Oh IDK maybe caster to 17K

IMG-20191228-164145.jpg

Okay dump bag in hole and add the rocks + dump water it's a wrap!

Now it's time for nature to do its part & since it warmed up last couple days!

Jack: still more steel (too much is never enough)!!!:)

What is the total weight of the jack-in-the-mail-box?

The Mail box comports with US Mail and it is not my design.

So far the pole will be much lighter than the average 4x4 wooden post.

The rotor in ground and second rotor is set with break away fasteners & so it will shear if hit directly and leave rotors set to the ground.

The addition of a bottom fold over flange and rest spring to hold it down inside the pipe will permit a complete collapse of pole too as safety device.
I'm building safety mechanisms into as much that can be done for function and usefulness.

Trying to exercise my consciousness to not be a 737 MAX scandal.

Okay additional ideas and improvements.

IMG-20200102-193827.jpg

Sodium hydroxide solution rust protected the rotor quick, maybe I will parkerize it. :p

Dampening adjustment superior.......

I hate to say this but that arm on the outside detracts from the previous elegant appearance.

Agreed but it is more functional for the weight and it can change plus rebound is adjustable in both directions.

I may do a sprocket with chain idea from a 1.8T/VR6 etc. inside the tube or a linkage rod from old A1- A2 or A3's for the shift linkage that always used to break have tons of those.

Right now have to make mail Lady happy.......

Night rider...........

I went back up and stuck A1 wheel bolt caps on the 17MM hex nuts + grease.......

The cool thing with metal is you can always but it back with the welder .............there are no mistakes in development!

Plus Eric out in CA was busting my balls about wanting to see the snow plow throw shit at it and right now is no snow.......
