Headlight Range (J431), Can someone decipher these codes for me?

Hi I got these codes which won't go away and the adaptive light in the dashboard is always on.

The two codes relating to this headlight range fall under 2 addresses:

Most of the 01771 codes I've read will show some faulty parts (like the level sender) to be replaced. This adaptive light in the instrument cluster has been an eye sore for months. ^^^^ coconutaudi: Hi. If I might add to Uwe's observation - perhaps look at the records in CodingLog.CSV and AdpLog.CSV files in the C:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Debug directory on the laptop that you use for VCDS for any changes that were made to the car on 29th November 2019 @ about 5:30 PM.

Uwe, up until now, I don't even realize that I have an onboard camera in my car, especially since I don't have this lane departure warning system or any system that uses an onboard camera. Not to my limited knowledge at least. So it is baffling as to how these two J431 and J852 are related. Maybe we can explore further from this info.

Hi Don, no changes was made on the 29th Nov @ 5.30pm. The only change I've made was on 27th Nov when I changed the battery serial number because I've replaced the battery. And this headlight range problem has been bugging me for months.

Hi, In your service folder, first page(s), in the rows with many 3 letter/numbers, does one combo say 8Q3?
I think the cam is used by the Auto dimming/full light function (AFS).

Hi Gremling,
I've checked and my options didn't include 8Q3. I found the list in the spare tire compartment. But I noticed my car has AFS13 stated in address 55 along with EV_AdvanFrontSyste, if indeed they are the same thing as the AFS you've mentioned. As suggested I will check fuse 8 in fuseholder C along with the fuse for the onboard camera (fuse 11 on fuseholder B) as there might be problem as pointed out by Uwe. As for the level sensors, I will check them too once I can get the car lifted.

So I've checked the followings
1. the fuse for the headlight range control J431 and it is good (fuse 8 in fuseholder C passenger side)
2. the fuse for the onboard camera which is also ok (fuse 11 on fuseholder B driver side)
3. the front left level sender (G78). No corrosion, wires are intact, no water ingress
4. the rear left level sender (G76). No corrosion, wires are intact, no water ingress

Those are the things which I have ruled out as being the source of the problem.

What is the next step? I'm thinking of replacing the headlight range control unit J431 next. My questions are:
1. Can I just swap the new J431 with the old one (part no 4H4 907 357 A)?
2. Do I need to code the new J431 unit and how do I go about it using the VCDS.
3. I've noticed that under address 55 there is Coding: 1121A633F918EB00. Is this the code we need to enter to the new unit?

Some more clues (maybe):

1. Just out of curiosity, I've tried to implement the Headlight Adjustment under Diagnostic Procedure with VCDS (wiki.ross-tech) to see what is the outcome.
I managed to follow the instructions (Actually I did not make any adjustment to the headlight position using the screw driver. I just clicked Stop after a minute) up until the Acknowledge Basis Setting. Here, when I clicked Go! instead of displaying running or learned, the phrase "Not Running" appeared. I've pressed Stop and cleared the fault codes. The fault codes immediately came back. Maybe this would give a clue to the problem.

2. In the fault code under address 55, it is stated "0061 - Function Restriction due to Implausible Message(s)
U1112 00 [137] -Fehlerhafter DLC der CAN-Messages Kamera_Status". According to Google the German phrase "Fehlerhafter DLC der CAN-Messages Kamera_Status" translates to "Faulty DLC of the CAN messages Camera_Status" . DLC means Data Link Connector. So the fault code should read "Faulty Data Link Connector of the CAN messages Camera_Status" which caused the Implausible Message, I think. Any idea what it is?

3. After starting the car, the "Audi adaptive light : system fault" will appear in the instrument cluster immediately after the headlights had done it swivel down and up routine. By the way is there any left and right movement during the headlight routine I've mentioned?

I was thinking CAN in the message should refer to Controller Area Network and therefore DLC should be interpreted Data Link Connector. Like you said it may not refer to the same thing.

BTW, I've tried the Output Test in the 55 Headlight Range address, I ran the Selective Output Test (UDS protocol) on all available output (swivel up down, left right etc) and they all work fine. In the Measuring Value function I got these values:
a) Right Dynamic AFS light motor status -- no error
b) Left Dynamic AFS light motor status -- no error
c) Adjusting motor for variable left front lighting -- Fault position 2 started
d)Adjusting motor for variable right front lighting -- Fault position 2 started

Are c) and d) considered problems?

This could be down to a couple of things.
1. a coding issue with the front camera. Does this car have high beam assist? Have there been any attempts to code additional functionality/ tweaks?
2. It may require a software update or the gateway may. These cannot be done with VCDS.

Hi,
I don’t know whether I can get a software upgrade since my car is an imported used from England. The audi dealership here only entertain vehicles bought from them. I did not do any tweaking apart from the usual needle sweep and I think since the headlight has AFS, it should have high beam assist.

I’ve read somewhere that an A8 with this problem had no choice but to disable the feature just to get rid of the annoying MIL in the cluster. Can it be done to an a6 c7? This should be my last resort.

I personally have never changed or mapped anything, but like I’ve said the car was imported used after being reconditioned in England. Somebody may or may not have done something there, I donÂ’t know. But I don’t think the car was involved in any accident.

Since you have mentioned it, how do I get my car’s software upgraded if the authorized audi dealers in Malaysia refused to do so? The car was imported by an independent car dealer and not by an authorized audi dealership.

You only need to update the software on a module if there are issues. It is not advised to update every module as this can sometimes cause a module to be bricked. If this is for example the gearbox, it could be a costly update. Hence you only update software if necessary.
VW produce TPI's (technical produce information) publications to dealers, you can download these from erwin (search for a link on this forum). There are several tools to update software on a module but the easiest way for you would be to find a dealer. If they refuse then we can advise on alternative options.

I found this CAN bus diagram which shows J431 and J852 next to each other. Not sure what to make out of it. Is J852 is the control module at fault? Loose connectors or wires, that J431 cannot understand? I've noticed that the J852 unit is on the windscreen.
