OK this doesn’t look great for VCDS being able to talk to the new VW ID range of cars

VW ID.3 - 3 high performance PC and Microsoft Azure Cloud[/h]"VW all new ID.3 braids: VW's new electric car only has three high-performance computers instead of the previous confusion of many different ECUs"
When an automobile manufacturer develops a completely new car with a completely new technological platform, it offers the opportunity to cut old braids and put an end to the juxtaposition of different techniques. That is exactly what Volkswagen is doing with the new ID family.
PC-WELT spoke with Martin Schleicher, Executive Vice President of Commercial Management of Elektrobit, about IT technology in ID.3. Elektrobit, part of Continental, supplies the software for the new ID.3.
The computers / control units, that is, the hardware for ID.3, come from Continental.
In general, it can be said that 2 to 5 HPC (domain computers, also known as HPC High Performance Computer) are installed on completely new car platforms, which exchange data over Ethernet and no more Can-Bus. That is the same with ID.3, which has a completely new computer architecture. Instead of many scattered throughout the car control units / computers, as is still common in modern cars, ID.3 only three high-performance computers are installed: an HPC for the digital cockpit, for car assistance systems driver and one as a gateway for various functions such as windows. These HPCs are networked through Gigabit Ethernet. In addition to these three HPCs, there are some ECUs that perform classic tasks in the car, for example by controlling computers for the electric motor and battery power supply.
In modern car computers, several operating systems are run (in real time), partly on virtual machines (Adaptive AutoSAR (Linux) with hypervisor). Virtualization, for example, some ECUs that run on virtual machines, must ensure the security and stability of IT in the car. If an application fails in such a virtual machine, the car can still run safely.

In the case of ID.3, the car is connected to the Microsoft Azure cloud. There are several services available to the customer through the cloud, for example, they can use this to verify the battery status of the ID.3 on their smartphones or to start a search at the charging point or preheat the battery in winter. etc, etc . Car sharing services are also possible through the Azure cloud. And of course, VW can deliver software updates through the cloud connection to the ID.3s or even unlock new features through the update in the car.
With regard to voice control, regardless of ID.3 for future development, it should be noted that some of the voice commands can be processed directly in the car and do not have to be forwarded to the language assistant servers. This refers to voice commands for immediate functions in the car, such as window operation or seat heating. Then we already know that by Mercedes-Benz MBUX.
However, another aspect of voice control is particularly exciting: how can you access the car's internal functions with established voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Assistant?
Until now, especially German car manufacturers use their own language assistant for the operation of automatic functions.
But the customer is increasingly accustomed to Alexa and Google Assistant, and these language assistants are now more powerful than the patented solutions developed by Audi / VW, Daimler or BMW. Therefore, the trend is likely to continue: soon you can also use automatic functions such as windows or seat heating with a voice command for Alexa. It must come so that it can be used locally for certain automatic Alexa functions in the car, without all Alexa commands being sent to the Amazon server.
In relation to the continuous network of cars with the Internet, of course, the security problem. So that hackers do not have any possibility and the (partially) autonomous car cannot hide false information or control it remotely, several security mechanisms are used in the car: firewalls, intrusion detection systems and scanners. Viruses constantly monitor bus traffic, also all data transported only encrypted. If the intruder detection system detects an anomaly in the car, this information is sent to the back-end for analysis. Of course, all that has to happen in fractions of a second.

Since IDx cars have no emissions at all, I suppose they are exempt from OBD-II/EOBD requirements.

But all that cloud crap aside, I expect there is still some way for a dealer to plug into these car and perform diagnostic functions directly. ;)

There WILL be a way for them to charge for it, at least. Maybe not so much of the diagnosing :D

I can confirm the OBPII is functional. :)
Yes, there are several ID.3 scans in the Reference Scans section. E.g.:
