Removed left cam cover. Cams are turning as expected. Valves are opening as expected. Lobes and followers appear in good working order.
I would have expected cam correlation codes had the exhaust cam been broken.

Additionally, the right bank of cylinder's (1-4) new plugs were again, very sooty compared to the left bank (5-8).

    Next: bore scope.

Just a thought: Would a completely plugged driver's side cat cause high compression values?
There were no catalyst efficiency codes, but then again, the engine couldn't run long enough to start checking those values???

I would think even with a plugged cat, with the other cylinders being open (no spark plug) this would release the built up pressure trapped between the exhaust valve and a plugged cat on the tested cylinder....???

I'll pull the upstream O2 sensor and perform a compression test again on that bank.

    You are getting warmer.............

Mechanical's always win over OBD, especially for FOD & rooting it out, now I just have to convince this older USAF guy that thinks I sound like his X-WIFE without being the last word!

O2 sensor removed, compression checked and -no change.
Bore scoped cylinders, exhaust valves verified opening.

Ok sigh. Thats an involved job that will require some time from what I'm seeing in my research. I miss the old days when timing could be verified with a light or just checking camshaft alignment vs crank position marks.

Any quick -n-dirty tips to check cam/crank timing on these 4.2FSI motors without plenum and timing cover(s) removal?

I have full access to ShopKeyPro for my service manual.
I'm a former auto technician with 25yrs experience, now teaching automotive tech, so not my first rodeo.
Appreciate the suggestions, but looking for some corners to cut, avoiding IF POSSIBLE -(please Lord) motor out timing component replacement.
Having no codes relating to timing issues frustrates me going down this timing colored road...
