Hello everybody,

After many years of hearing about VCDS, I finally have a (new to me) 2012 Passat NMS SEL VR6. First a bit of history: the car has 160k on the clock and was decently maintained (and absolutely beautifully cleaned and waxed regularly) by the prior owner, who had it since new. I took possession of the car a few weeks ago, and quickly noticed the heater output was middling, with different temps on driver and passenger sides.

This is the dual-zone Climatronic.

At the time I hadn't gotten my VCDS yet, but found many posts about clogged heater cores and the relatively easy replacement. So, I ordered a new core and went about installing it. Long story short, I botched it and mangled the heater pipes, so I wound up removing the instrument panel. Out came the air distribution box so I could replace the metal lines, and I put it all together again to find...the same tepid heat!

I'm satisfied that the core is working fine -- both pipes are HOT to the touch, with no detectable difference between them. Coolant level is stable, so I don't think it's air bound.

So, after the work, the performance is the same as it was. I don't think it's changed by the work I did.

Finally got my VCDS last week, and got the codes from the car. There were a number of codes initially, mostly related to the car's confusion after the work I did. I cleared all codes first, then re-ran the Auto-Scan several times. Here's what I'm left with now:

Given the number of sensor codes, plus the engine and central electric codes, am I on the right track thinking this is likely an issue with wiring or a module somewhere? Perhaps the Climatronic control unit itself is on the fritz? Curious what the experienced among you may think. It seems unlikely that both right and left temp sensors, for instance, would both be bad at the same time. But I'll believe anything!

I'm an experienced shadetree mechanic, having learned my way from a couple dozen 90s Saab 9000s, plus a couple E34 BMWs and a few other patients. However, I recognize my limits, and I have gotten away with throwing parts at the problems for the most part. Now I expect it's time for me to learn how to wield a voltmeter and obtain the art of electrical fault-finding! So, any recommended study materials and vids would be most welcome.

To finish off, the VW is with my parents in Connecticut -- who will be driving it locally for errands -- while I live in Brooklyn, NY. So there will be a long delay before I get to try my next approach. Before I captured this auto-scan, I have cleared all codes a few times, performed the vent adaptation (performed via VCDS and also via the Climatronic unit) successfully, and obtained the reported temp readings from the left and right vent sensors -- 85C (!!!) for both. I also uninstalled/reinstalled the Climatronic unit and double-checked that all connectors were solid, then cleared and rescanned again.

Again, I suspect nothing is different as a consequence of my work. Everything is connected properly, and I don't think I damaged any wiring during the work. It seems the heat is about as it was before I dug in.

Sorry for such a long message, but I'm very excited to learn more about VCDS and my Passat! Luckily, there is heat, just not great heat, so my parents won't freeze to death this winter, and I can take a careful and reasoned approach to diagnosis and repair. At least going forward, ha ha!

Given the number of sensor codes, plus the engine and central electric codes, am I on the right track thinking this is likely an issue with wiring or a module somewhere? Perhaps the Climatronic control unit itself is on the fritz? Curious what the experienced among you may think. It seems unlikely that both right and left temp sensors, for instance, would both be bad at the same time.
While we can't rule out the Climatronic module itself, if it were mine, I'd be study the wiring diagrams for that system and look for a possible common point of failure for those temperature sensors.

Hi all, hope the holidays and new year were good to you! I have finally been back to Connecticut last week, and took a couple tentative steps to further this diagnosis.

I studied everything I could and got a decent multimeter, and also a logic-safe test light. I downloaded the WD from ERWIN and studied in detail. From the diagram, it appeared there might be a clue: the left & right vent temp sensors and the solar sensor (the ones registering fault codes) all connect to the same green/lilac ground wire, back to the climatronic unit, and also bridged into the AC wiring harness. My hypothesis was that there was a breakage in this common ground and that measuring voltage across the 2-pin connectors to the sensors would perhaps confirm that. If I got no voltage at the connector, I supposed, it might indicate the ground continuity was absent.

(On returning the car, I did an autoscan. Much the same as the previous, only now with the floor vent sensors added to the mix with the same "short to zero". Also a can bus code, no communication with the climatronic module. Heat symptoms still the same, no other operational issues evident. The rear bulb code was due to a blown tail light bulb that was replaced. I cleared all the fault codes before beginning my work. Here it is below:)

As my first step, I removed the right and left dash vent sensors, unplugged the connectors, and measured the voltage across the pins. For both right and left sensors, solid 4.9 volts present. Didn't fit with my hypothesis. Planned to do a similar test on the solar sensor, which was shown to have a 6-pin connector in the diagram, but in fact has a 4-pin connector. (???!!!!) So abandoned any testing there.

I then measured the resistance of the right and left sensors, and found they were about the same, and that both resistances dropped at about the same rate when I held them in my fingers to warm them up. I can't find my notes now to indicate what the ohm readings were now...grrr.

Next I reinstalled the temp sensors, this time swapping sides, to see if the tepid heat would follow the moving sensor, and drove the car. The weak heat was still on the passenger side, so it didn't follow the sensor.

Now I cleared the codes and drove the car for a bit, fiddling with the temp settings, then autoscanned afterwards. No codes whatsoever. I repeated this several times with the same result, no codes.

Lastly, I looked at the measuring blocks for the 4 temp sensors, and got the readings below. Notice that the left footwell sensor seems to be reading higher than the rest, and in the last reading they're all completely nuts. Does "MUX Ausblastemperatur" mean something specific, and why is only this sensor labeled this way?

This was all I had time for before I had to return to Brooklyn. Again, the heat is working, just not as expected, and weak on the passenger side. I can't believe I'd have FOUR BAD temp sensors. Could there be a resistance issue in the ground circuit that allowed my voltage test to show misleading results? Did I do the wrong test? Or, does the somewhat random temp sensor readings indicate the Climatronic unit needs to be replaced?

Another thought raised by Jack from my original Autoscan in November: maybe the car's battery is weak. Back then the fault code, I think, was due to me running several scans, "key on engine off" and door open, with dome lights -- and headlights -- on the whole time. I haven't seen the battery code in subsequent scans, so I suspect it's fine. Still, maybe a weak battery is interfering with the temp sensor readings? But why only this heat-related symptom and not other freaked out systems? And if I replace the battery, are there other special steps I must take, like you do with modern BMWs (I know, RTFM dummy!)?

I hope my ramblings make some sense, and I did SOMETHING right, SORT OF, at least! Happily the car is driving great, and it's just this non-fabulous heat issue. I'm enjoying learning how to do these diagnostics, and super appreciative of everyone's time and help. And I'm content to do a little here, a little there, aiming not to break anything along the way. Hopefully I'll have a new set of steps to try next time I'm at the car!

Measuring voltage on a circuit with no load on it doesn't mean a whole lot. Put a load on the circuit. One comparable to the temperature sensors' lowest value. If there's a ground wire, measure resistance from its terminus at the sensor back to a known good ground.

I would start by just measuring resistance of the wires.

For providing a load within the range of the sensor, a decade box is indeed ideal.

Hello again everybody. Not much to update you with -- no measurements on the ground wire I'm interested in. I need to understand better where the ground actually passes through before I measure its resistance. It appears from the WD that it's a common ground shared with some AC components in a different diagram, and I'm still trying to find time to scrutinize so I understand where that is. I don't want to fry something.

But in my last visit, I did take another autoscan, which produced NO codes whatsoever. This after the car was being driven consistently. Heat issue still present as before. Interesting.

I then measured the battery with my voltmeter, and got the following results:

Car off: 11.79 volts
Cranking: 9.8 volts
Running: 13.79 volts

I see from my very first autoscan it reported 11.6/11.4. My later autoscan, a couple weeks later, reported 11.8/11.8.

Is this a healthy battery? I wonder if a reboot would help, regardless.

But I'm beginning to think the whole thing is really just a clogged heater core. Meaning the system has enough muck in it from the prior neglected coolant, that it promptly clogged up the new core as soon as I installed it. Despite my best efforts to flush the system.

One of these weekends it'll be time for its 10K mile service, and I will do another coolant flush then, and maybe we'll find out.

That doesn't sound like a healthy battery to me. Have you tried charging it?

However, I doubt that a weak battery is causing the problems you cited when you started this thread.

Are the heater hoses hot in and out with temp gun if measured?

Can you manipulate blend doors manually to make heat?

Are you sure cooling system is without air bound issue?

Have you checked the flow of core with a garden hose or attempted a reverse hook up to flush?

Post a complete auto-scan please.

Any battery sitting 15 minutes after being fully charged and less than 12.5 volts static is junk!

Thanks for the additional feedback.

Couple challenges to answering your thoughts Jack:

1. No heat gun in my possession. But my earlier fingertip test of the metal pipes under the dash registered that they're both hot. The core could be partially plugged or air bound, as you point out, so maybe coolant passes through the pipes like we'd expect, but not the whole core.

2. I haven't removed the lower dash to look at the blend door activation to confirm movement, or manipulate them manually. Running the calibration steps seems to make all the right noises, and completes satisfactorily according to the VCDS. I'll check that next time too.

3. Air bound is certainly possible. As with heat gun, I'm not equipped to do a vacuum fill of the system, so I'd have to pay someone to do a flush and vacuum fill for me to find out. Can a Mighty Vac get the job done? I assume not.

Maybe there's an air leak in one of the hose unions too, admitting air?

4. I have to do a timing chain/guide job later this summer, and I'll be including a complete cooling system check including pressure test. And a definite reverse flush with garden hose.

5. I have no autoscan to offer for the latest go-round -- I keep transferring back and forth between my Mac and PC, and don't have the PC handy in my Lockdown Shanty here in Brooklyn (car's in Connecticut, safe from the zombies). But the general concept is, no trouble codes from HVAC.

6. Good to know on the battery. I'll plan to replace the battery as soon as I can. I'm aware of the coding requirements.

I am still expecting the core to be clogged. You should have seen the calcium crap that came out of the heater pipes when I was handling that repair.

Thanks for the patience at my bass-ackwards approach to this diagnosis...and the slow pace. I am definitely learning, and enjoying the process.
