Hi guys, hoping you can help with a few suggestions. My car has a really annoying light assist function which is way too sensitive for my liking and wondering if there is a way to delay its operation as evening/daylight approaches. As the light begins to fall, a message appears on my Digital dashboard to switch on the dipped headlamps. While this message is displayed, and until you actually turn the headlights on, no other settings or displays are visible in the digital cockpit any longer. This is really frustrating as I drive quite a bit in very slow traffic at dusk/dawn and don’t want to have my dipped headlights on when I don’t need them, in particular in almost daylight conditions !!

I have looked in the 09 Central electrics module and channel map attached. Did a lot of converting German into English from there, and eventually found and played around a bit with the default lux settings I found (dumped below fyi) but it made no difference to the functionality of this dipped headlight warning at all regardless of trial changed values.

Assume its controlled by the slave HLRS coding in this channel, but could not find a deactivate option in there either.

Wondering if anyone has any knowledge of how I might be able to delay this warning till much later, (the vehicles head units “Late” option is also selected), but still the warning to switch my headlights comes on in almost full dayligh, or how to just deactivate the warning completely.

Owen: It's very interesting (at least to me) how length of twilight period varies across continents and time-of-year!

I'm not sure that a solution to your problem is immediately obvious, but it will be illuminating (pun intended) if you post-up a complete (meaning unedited) auto-scan for the car in question (instead of just the Gateway installation list).

Again, I'm not sure about your mk7.5 - but in earlier model mk7 Golfs, the upper nibble of Byte 0 on the light-sensor (which is a LIN slave module to the BCM - so the sensor is not included in the gateway summary list) had a bunch of software switches that enabled earlier switch-on thresholds for the sensor. Since you haven't posted a complete auto-scan, it's not possible to ascertain whether the light sensor on your car has one of these earlier settings selected.

While this message is displayed, and until you actually turn the headlights on, no other settings or displays are visible in the digital cockpit any longer.

This can be disabled by changing the adaption channel "ENG141656-ENG126818-Außenlicht_uebergreifend-Fahrlichtwarnung_Hinweis_Konfig" to "not active" in your BCM.

Hi TBAx,

Tried your suggestion and it worked, disabled the warnings completely. However, I decided to choose one of the alternative setting options for that channel, “Hinweis_in_LDS-Stellung_Null” rather than the German option of "not active" per your recommendation. What this setting allows is for the warning to come on with the light switch in the 0 (Off) position only, and if I then briefly switch to Auto or Headlight setting with the rotary light switch for a few seconds in order to allow the dipped beams to come on, and the warning to go off, I then move the rotary switch to side light position only, and the warning remains off. So this is an ideal workaround for me, thank you so much.
For my further learning, I would be interested in finding out exactly which channel adaptations control the daylight sensor on/off thresholds for this dipped beam warning message and functionality. I know the trigger is via light senor on the rear of the interior mirror, as I have held my LED torch up to this and watched the warning message switch off on the dashboard. Further observed this through watching the advanced measuring data values changing in the following two channels as I moved the torch up to and away from the mirror sensor.
IDE05838-MAS04809 Light recognition sensor-Darkness - On
IDE05838-MAS04810 Light recognition sensor-Request for light activation - On
With the torch against the senor, both values above changed to Off. Moving it away they both change back to On. (Car in low ambient light garage)

The perfect solution for me would be to modify the low light trigger value(s) in the appropriate channel or channels, assuming there are some linked and related settings around this. (Hysteresis settings along with Lux light level settings etc.) If I could adjust this so that the warning does not come on at all in other than “appropriate low light levels actually requiring dipped headlights”, I would do that and revert the ENG141656-ENG126818-Außenlicht_uebergreifend-Fahrlichtwarnung_Hinweis_Konfig setting you suggested, changing it back to Hinweis_in_LDS-Stellung_Null_und_SL per the vehicle default and VW’s intention I guess.
If you could add any more clarity around that aspect it would be very much appreciated, if not though, no problem as your suggestion has provided a very workable solution for me on this very annoying “switch on dipped headlight” VW Golf MK7.5 light problem.

Owen: Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, if anyone knows these answers, TBAx is definitely the one!!;).

Sounds like you have a passion for solving this problem and the intellectual capacity to pursue the matter - both excellent attributes.

In the primordial recesses of the last century when you were probably not born, a wonderfully kind and well respected teacher here in the Antipodes tried desperately to instill lighting theory into the stubborn minds of his students (of which I was one).

Although I suspect that the definition of twilight is a physical thing involving the relative position of the sun and the earth's surface, from a lighting perspective we used a standard of 500 lux in his classes. Because I was more interested in "extra-curricular" pursuits in those days, I'm not sure if this measure was a recognized standard (I suspect not) - but it's a not unreasonable rule-of-thumb metric IMO.

So - back to your problem: If I look at my database of BCM admaps on an application like MS Access and if I apply a search vector for settings around 500 lux, the following adaptation channels are returned:

ENG122932-ENG123007-RLS_Night_Sensitivity-p_lx_rs_dawn > 200 lx
ENG122932-ENG123006-RLS_Night_Sensitivity-p_lx_rs_day > 500 lx

Now - without any knowledge what-so-ever of how the boffins @ VW/Audi actually intended these channels to operate, I'm guessing that there is an inherent hysteresis built-into the design for the headlight ON/OFF function. By which I mean that in order to stop the control mechanism from "hunting" (i.e. stopping the switching ciruit from continuously cycling on/off around a single threshold light value) 2 x threshold values are used.

This means (and again, I'm guessing) that assuming that the ignition is kept switched-on, once the headlights are automatically enabled at the ENG123008 value of 500 lux (above), the control mechanism will stay switched-on until the ambient light level rises again to the ENG123007 value of 200 lux - see pic below:

I've not tried playing with settings on either of the 2 x channels above - but I believe that they are sufficiently intriguing for your purpose as to warrant your attention. Perhaps?

PS: and just in case you are wondering why I launched into a discussion about switching hysteresis - if you are successful in modifying the setting on the ENG123006 channel - you might consider retaining the same differential that is designed into the factory settings . By which I mean if you lower "day" level - increase the "dawn" level by the same amount

PPS:... and here is another aspect of the ability to alter the switch-on light thresholds - alas in the wrong direction for your purpose (it's the long-code string for the RLS/RHLS/RFLS). Notice that the code-string value is the same as in your auto-scan. It would be interesting to see what happens to the Lux settings in the 2 x adaptation channels above if the threshold settings are changed in this Byte ?

Unfortunately being born in the late 50’s last century as well, and from my interest in photography from my early teens at that time, I probably have an unhealthy interest in light levels and solving this problem for the general “Scottish” ambient light conditions, and my declining tolerance for annoying problems…...

Appreciate if you could double check your thoughts on that, higher Lux is brighter triggering switch off, not switch on etc.

Understand and agree with your hysteresis theory and will keep that in mind with future trials.

Already had a go at changing the Long coding in the RLS/RHLS/RFLS slave controller a few days ago, with no significant difference noticed. Note though that although 4 alternatives are shown there, only 1 (+60% from memory) was accepted by the controller with the others being rejected as “out of range.” Will try the +60% one again and note any difference in the lux values then set in ENG123006 and ENG123007 and let you know.

hmm....... OK - it might be my thick Australian accent and my involuntary (and understandable) tendency to easily slip into "strine" (look it up) - but I suspect that we do misunderstand each over!!

That said, I'm not entirely sure which of us is correct - my ego makes me hope that it's you that is wrong, but past experience in interpreting the meaning of BCM channels suggests that it might be me that has erred (which would be an unmitigated disaster - I'm sure you would agree !! :D)

So this is my thinking - If you look at the wording of the channels - the "dawn" channel has the lower setting of 200 Lux. My assumption (and it's just that) is that the value in this channel relates to what happens when the car is traversing the period from late night to early morning. While I agree with your hypothesis about the relative values of the 2 x threshold values - the only way to make sense of the title words in the channel name is my way - I think.

In my befuddled mind, this logic tends to support the notion that the lower lux value in ENG123007 is the "switch-off" threshold (which may be accompanied by a warning message) and ENG123006 is the threshold for "switch-on" which is accompanied with the familiar nag-message that annoyingly and repeatedly has assailed your gaze.

But, as I have said numerous times before - there is no greater folly than a man (or woman) who believes that truth has only one face - so, I'm more than happy to be proven wrong!

It’s not the strine that’s confusing us here, more the German translation of the coding intent I think. I agree with your thinking that the lower value relates to what happens at dawn, and the higher value dictates what happens at day. (Or dusk more to my thinking) Our thoughts are in line actually I think, not different. I got myself confused when you mentioned “the headlights are automatically enabled at the ENG123008 value of 500 lux (above)” The word (above) there confused me, as I agree it will switch on as the light fades to 500 lux or “below”, hysteresis values accepted, and then remain on until daylight fades completely into night, night turns into dawn next day and the light level rises to 200 lux or “above” again, hysteresis values accepted to prevent hunting around these single value thresholds, so we are in sync I think. I confused myself originally with your 500 (above) comment as mentioned.

I tried playing around with the various lux settings again today, but not much further forward I don’t think.

Trial 1-
Reduced the value in MAS08228-ENG133437 from 1200 to 60.
At the same time, reduced the value in MAS08228-ENG133438 to 80, that was the lowest value the controller would accept with MAS08228-ENG133437 set to 60.

While monitoring the actual trigger values for lights and warning on / off via the advanced measuring blocks below, noted that regardless of these changes, warning message and dipped headlights still came on around 300 lux, and remained on until around 3000 lux??? As such, changed these two back to their default values.

Light sensor advanced measuring blocks:
IDE05838-MAS02475 Light recognition sensor-Brightness infrared 0 lx
IDE05838-MAS02851 Light recognition sensor-Brightness 60 lx
IDE05838-MAS04809 Light recognition sensor-Darkness On
IDE05838-MAS04810 Light recognition sensor-Request for light activation On

Trial 2 -
Reduced the hysteresis settings at MAS08228-ENG133434 and MAS08228-ENG133435 both to 60, again the lowest value they would accept. Did not notice any change in switch off/on behaviour compared with the above Trial. So, changed those two back to their defaults as well.
Tried to change the sensitivity settings for dawn and day channels at ENG123007 and ENG123006, but the controller would not accept any different values there, returning the “out of range” error message on both channel change attempts. (Up or down)

Trial 3 –
Per your PPS comment, I changed the slave controller long coding to the +60% level option, the only one it would permit me to change rejecting all others as “out of range.” The revised coding was accepted as 18A8DD. I looked the actual lux values in ENG123007 and ENG123006 to determine if they had changed at all, but they were still the same level of 200 and 500 respectively.

So still needing to do a bit more thinking and research into this, I’m wondering if the Infra red sensor is in some way playing a part here, by way of a combination of both luminance light and infra red light permutations here??? E.g MAS08228-ENG133444

Changing the "ENG141656-ENG126818-Außenlicht_uebergreifend-Fahrlichtwarnung_Hinweis_Konfig" channel to "kein_Hinweis" worked for me as well on my 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport. That disabled the "Please switch on your lights" message all together.

I was annoyed when entering my car, starting it and being forced to turn on the lights just to back out of the dark garage before being allowed to changed the profile from my wife's to my own via the steering wheel controls.

I don't need the car to tell me when to turn on the lights, I can handle that one! :)

I just got my mk7.5 GTI a couple of weeks ago, and this was one of the first things I found annoying - so this is a fantastic topic for me, and the solution is there for me already.

My scenario is that when driving on brightly lit evening or even night time streets, I do not believe the dipped headlights are required! The LED DRLs on the front are very bright indeed. LED streetlights have greatly increased the illumination levels of urban streets and I think that all that LED dipped headlights add, is more dazzle. I know not everyone will agree with me, and I know its probably not legal to not have dipped headlights on after dark.

Its interesting to note that in the old days - in city or urban driving on roads with streetlights, cars quite often only used sidelights. It created a much less stressful atmosphere... I

You'll probably find the LED DRL cause more dazzle than the headlights as they have no defined cut-off.

I hope you also have rear DRL coded to make sure your visible from the rear :)

I hadn't thought about the front DRLs causing dazzle... I'll look into that... i presume from your comment that they turn off when dipped headlights are on, which i also didn't realise!

I was wanting to use the headlight switch in its sidelight position, so the rear lights would be on.
