Hi This is my first time posting so bear with me. The original problem is my battery goes flat within 2 days. I have measured the battery current draw when the car is off and locked. After 2-3 minutes the current decreases from 2A to 1A then momentarily goes to .07A and then back up to 2A again and repeats this cycle over and over. I have recently replaced the passenger door lock actuator. When I ran a new scan I noticed a lot of malfunctions and reference to a convertible top( the car is a sedan). I'm thinking I need to get these faults cleared so the car actually go to sleep and stays asleep and thus will solve my battery drain problem. I'm looking for help on how to resolve these malfunctions. I'm also wondering how my car thinks its a convertible and could that be the reason for many of the malfunctions?

Hi and welcome!
First of all remove 0x26 from gateway installation list.
Second question - do Your car has/had 0x77 - telephone interface/Bluetooth module? If no - remove it too. If it is in the car, it is out of order. Disconnect it and measure current drain after that.
Third thing - 0x7D aux electric heater. They are draining some current too, if defective, but not so much. Last couple of them drained 150-250mA, before I repaired them. For testing disconnect it, too.
Next - clear all fault codes and make a fresh autoscan - maybe it is not enough to remove non-existing modules from GW list, some other modules may need some coding changes, too.

Plus. Check/repair wiring in rubber boot from A pillar to drivers door. Reason for side crash sensor error 99% is there. And typically some more wires are damaged in this place. Check the same place in opposite side (front passenger door), too. Open circuit to loudspeakers let me think there are some more damaged wiring in both sides.

MartinsX - Thanks for your quick reply. I'm not sure how to remove things from the gateway installation list and the other areas you mentioned. Is there something I can read and learn how to do? The car does not have the phone interface and Bluetooth feature or aux electric heater. That's part of what is confusing me is these other modules(phone, convertible roof) showed up after I began to have the battery drain issue.

I will try to pull the rubber boots back farther on the doors to check for wire damage again. Probably tomorrow. I'm assuming that I should be able to see wire insulation damage if that is indeed the problem?

2) Your car has aux electric heater - address 7D, as it is "alive", "talks" with diagnostics and reports fault codes
3) Do not pull rubber boots. Find some Youtube how-to or RTFB how to disengage clips that hold rubber boot at A pillar. Or practice on some salvaged car at junkyard. It is very easy to brake small clips and boot will not hold at place anymore. After disengaging clips pull boot away and disconnect connector (it has a locking mechanism, too). Then You will have more or less acceptable access for checking wires. I think wiring to doors is main reason for current drain.

Now I know this car is way past its useful life but I'm with I think a good hypothesis for the gateway being a defeat device or a required dissemination of public materials to code a self coding gateway & since that is apparently happening, no????? & when they lose voltage or are installed new, this would make a tool such as VCDS required hence free if vehicle is within useful life for reimbursement by an owner since not accessible by the OBD2 CAA specification now huh?

If a battery is to die or become weaker than expected or every two days like aforementioned & due to this stupid shit, than that would make the car start harder at slower crank speeds flooding fuel in engines or require more load of the DFM to be maintained during recovery after started & hence more SMOG during warm-up cycle and violate a conformity certificate as affirmed too on the COC application, no?

Just thinking and questioning aloud............

I removed the 0x26, 0x77, 0x7D, from the gateway installation list. Then cleared the fault codes and did a fresh scan. I measured battery draw again with doors,hood closed and vehicle locked - after 20 min still the same battery drain as before.

As You have Radio (56), Digital Radio (0F) and Aux Heater (7D) present in the car, the correct installation list should be with those modules enabled. If You want to exclude those modules from potential current consumers list, You must disconnect them physically, too.
Check wiring at doors, start with front left.
BTW Audi A3 8P goes into full sleep mode after 30-35 min. European version Golf 5 / Jetta 1K does it quicker, I don't know about NAR specifics.

I removed the radio fuse and closed doors and hood, locked the car and monitored battery draw. After 15 min the current continued to cycle like before but not as high, 1A then 220mA then 67mA. The next thing I did was check the drivers door harness connectors. Both the door and pillar sides of the connector were quite corroded. Looks like I will need to replace the door harness but I was able to clean the corrosion off the pillar side of the connection. I ran out of time to do anything more tonite.

Hello there. back in those days in the dealership as a MT the main drain issues were software issues with 56 Radio depending on which unit. I may be able to source the correct level of software but this will be Monday. pull main radio fuse then monitor the current draw. below 300 milliamps for that MY. Obviously address the J533 coding issue first.

Update - I enabled the radio (56) and Digital Radio (0F) and disabled the Aux Heater (7D). I disconnected a power lead and unplugged the signal connector to the aux heater. I also removed the drivers front kick panel to access the mating door connector and further cleaned both connectors as best I could. The I cleared DTC's and reran a scan. Monitored battery current draw after 20min with everything closed and locked. Current drain was same as when I pulled the radio fuse. 1A then 220mA, then 67mA then repeats.

Monitored battery current draw after 20min with everything closed and locked. Current drain was same as when I pulled the radio fuse. 1A then 220mA, then 67mA then repeats.

That video was great. Answered a bunch of my questions. I've got a good DVM but I'll need to fully charge my battery so looks like i'll be able to do this tomorrow. I'll be sure to post my results. Thanks!

I might have that door harness new and sometimes I restring them myself with spiral wrap enhancement.

Very common issue

Uwe's suggestion on measuring mV drop across fuses is absolutely the best and fastest way to track down what system a draw is coming from.

Also, leave the driver door open, but trip the latch. The door switch being integrated into the latch, this will make the car recognize the door as being closed.

And then you'll also want to unplug the hood switch so the car thinks the hood is closed if you were leaving it open for the draw test for battery access previously.

Another good thing to do is to double check measured values in the 46 central convenience module and make sure that all doors, trunk and hood are infact being recognized as closed.

As far as the door harness, definitely a common issue with early Mk5s. VW issued an updated harness that is longer so it doesn't stress and break the wires like the original did. But, I would also expect there to be codes stored in the 42 and 46 modules if there were a harness issue and you would notice a lack of functionality with some functions intermittently with that door.

I measure at the battery for voltage drop and amp draw simultaneously with a stop watch.
Usually a bad zone shows its issue in VCDS blocks during an exercise of function.

I also just force a bypass either with VCDS if possible and function of every component or alarm zone, often an open door permits a chafed harness to make contact, so when in doubt load light the harness.

Sometimes to prove a theory and as age sets in with experience for ghost issue's as sporadic, if i suspect entry related, I bypass at 0x46 or 0x09 directly, than remove a zone one at a time over a course of time & so I'm forced to disassemble the whole car to find a dumb problem.

Don't forget to test the brake light switch or battery itself for floater!

OK so i recharged the battery, checked the charging voltage, tripped the door and hood latches so i could keep them open, waited 1 hr for the car to go to sleep, and measured all the voltage drops of the fuses.
Battery at rest = 12.52Vdc, Battery charging voltage = 14.51Vdc, battery was replaced in 2017.

Measurements below were taken using a Fluke 287 and currents were calculated by using the fuse charts recommended previously.

Interior Fuse Panel:

F12, 10A Red Mini = .27mV (40mA draw per fuse charts)
F13, 10A Red Mini = Cycled between .2mV and 0mV (27mA - 0mA)
F14, 10A Red Mini = Cycled between .367mV and 0mV (54mA - 0mA)
F24, 30A Yellow Standard = Cycled between .5mV, then .15mV, then 0mV (158mA, 40mA, 0mA)
All other fuses were steady at 0mV.

Engine Compartment, 30 Fuse box:

F2, 5A Tan, Standard = Cycled between 1.6mV and .9mV (90mA and 50mA) i did not see it go to 0.
F6, 5A Tan, Standard = Cycled between .7mV and .0mV (39mA and 0mA)
F18, 30A Green Standard = Cycled between .24mV and 0mV (125mA and 0mA)
F19, 30A Green Standard = Cycled between .114mV and 0mV (50mA and 0mA)
All other fuses were steady at 0mV.

All this was done with the engine compartment F8 (Radio) fuse pulled.

Does anyone have the fuse description for what each fuse powers? My owners manual does not identify many of the fuses.
