I expect if you're replacing the complete door control modules, they will need to be coded. This should be no big deal since you've done an Auto-Scan first.

The only catch might be that updated modules may be different and have the rears as sub-systems instead of separately addressable modules. I'm not sure whether that's applicable to your car though.

Yep. It's not entirely clear to me what he's replacing, nor am I all that familiar with what's actually inside those doors. :o

Before changing lock modules, it might be a good idea to check wiring in doors for chafe internally and at pivot points, right guys?

No coding will be needed if for a wire repair.

No coding is required. The lock/latch module electrically is nothing more than a bunch of switches, most all on the same circuit board, and an electric motor. It is not diagnostic capable, it's just sending signals to the door control module, which is part of the window motor.

VW has been doing it that way since the mk4 and it's a pretty clever way to reduce wiring inside the car. Cars that had crank windows (or just older generation cars) used to have to send individual signals on individual wires, so you'd have 3 wires for the key in the door switch position, if it had lock position recognition there's another switch or two and wires for the door open recognition all would be wired individually and pass through between door and chassis. Kind of funny to think that with the mk4s at least, crank window cars have MORE wires passing between chassis and door than the power window cars do... doesn't make sense until you realize just how many signals are distilled down onto the data bus on the power window cars.

But with this design, all those microswitches have a common ground inside the lock module, so automatically a reduction of wires there as it's only 1 wire to supply ground for every switch. Then every switch has its own wire output, but that wire only has to make it to the window motor/door control module, which then translates all that information to the data bus (along with window switch position, lock button commands, receiving and responding to signal from the remote, dimmer illumination and ignition switch positions all are on those 2 wires called the comfort system data bus). So, all that info that used to be on several individual wires for those individual signals get turned into digital messages and sent on the data bus network twisted pair of wires instead.

Long story short, no, door LOCK modules do not need any coding. It's a pretty simple module, there is no microchip of any kind in them. If you were to replace the window motor, which integrates the door control module, then yes, there would likely be coding involved, or in the case of Mk4s you just had to make sure you got the right part number and color code to match the old one before replacing, no coding necessary. But in mk5 and up, instead of door control modules being subsystems of the comfort system, they actually get their own diagnostic address and coding in mk5 and up cars for the most part... again, that's the door control module, not the lock module. Lock module, just plug it in and go. You may want to clear the codes from the comfort system control module (46) and the door control module that has set codes for the lock module (42).

I also see a code for one of the rear door's lock modules... might want to look into that as well.

Great info! Thank you! I'm actually replacing all three door lock actuator/latches. The only thing working is the front passenger door. I guess this will take me the whole day or two!

Did you know the lock units are easy to revive with compressed air and lock lubricant, you might be very surprised what cleaning the dirt out does with 409 then WD40 with compressed air?

Depends on what's failed. I've fixed a few that did need a new microswitch for the latch open/close recognition because the plunger flat gets worn by the rotary piece.

I've also had them where the motor itself just simply won't spin in one direction anymore.

I've also had it where every microswitch was not being recognized... because the solder joint for the common ground input to the circuit board had popped.

Had a couple pre-2000 Beetles and Mk4s that had somehow had the pins from where they go between the connector point for the harness to the circuit board simply corrode away to nothing.

Fortunately for at least the door latch microswitch, the latest revisions from the OE have a metal lever so the rotary bit isn't wearing directly on the plastic microswitch plunger...
