I was hoping to be able to post photo of the FOD removed by a local shop.

Background, and I'll try to keep the story short. Was getting a little rattle on start up every once in a while. Very sporadic. The vehicle threw a cam sensor code 2X and idle, had like a rich roll all (Lambda was good - less than 1%) No miss fire codes.

Did some research here and reviewed TSB's. The vehicle has 163,xxx miles on it. It's never had any cam work done on it or had the tensioner replaced - Soooo ... not having the time or tools or experience with doing the job on the engine I took it to a HIGHLY reputable shop. Had the tensioner replaced, asked about chain "stretch" and wear. I was talked out of doing a chain and guide replacement. Values and measurements were checked all found to be good.

FAST FORWARD 30 Days - pulled into my parking lot after driving 30 plus miles, stepped on the clutch and the vehicle died. No restart - pushed it into a parking space. Went back out during a break to do some checking, car started and ran very rough at idle but would run, codes were misfires all over the board, unresolved cam sensor and failure to fully retard during start. Anything above 1000 rpm seemed to be OK - other than the exhaust note is off of normal - more of a low and throaty tone. I determined it would run home without damage, suspecting it was a breather valve problem - high vacuum at the oil cap and ran smother with it off. Still had my concerns with cam timing and it's control. Breather valve change smoothed things out slightly - still had rattle low in the forward end of the engine during start. I brought it to another shop - with a good reputation closer to home.

During their diagnosing process, the cam bridge was removed. A spring and a few little metal bits were found in the oil galley directly below the exhaust cam. (wish I could post those pictures)

I have searched the net, and manuals available to me to find an oil circuit diagram to figure out where it came from and what it was for ? the shop I am dealing with is at a loss for where it liberated itself. Anybody know of a oil circuit schematic for an EA113 CAEB ?

Jack ? Dr Peter ? Uwe ? .... almost posted this at the bar, because I've had a couple of beers pondering over saving the patient (cost effectively) or not. Being a professional technician I know anything can be repaired with enough time and money ...

^^^^BigJet: Hi - very interesting and intriguing story - looking forward to the next episode, so please post pictures!!.

I'm certainly not an expert on VAG engines and (like you) I couldn't find an oil circuit schematic for the EA113 (TFSI), but I was able to cobble together a couple of pages from the SSP for the 2.0 L TSI engine.

My understanding (which may be wrong) is that in respect of the oil circuitry, the principal difference between these 2 x engines (aside from the placement of components on the left/right side) was in the way that the camshaft drove the high-pressure pump (i.e the inclusion cam on the high pressure pump and a rolling tappet to fix a known problem - the camshaft was not sufficiently hardened in the earlier models).

If I'm correct, I'm hoping therefore that there is significant similarity between the circuit diagrams for the 2 x engines. Anyhow, with this caveat - see below!!!

Is not the Audi CAEB an engine code for the TSI EA888 not the EA113 FSI??

So oil diagram provided is what you are looking for.

Don, thank you ! Probable suspects, Items 17, 23 and 24...

MVB - You are probably correct that the engine is an EA 888 - I know for sure it is a CAEB code. Thank you.

I would assume (and hope) if it was from the bridge assembly, items 22 & 23 that it would have been seen by the shop when they had the bridge off. Item 24 i am guessing is the control valve. That leaves item 17..... Yes ?? ...

like I said early on ... great bar discussion amongst technicians.

I have recommendations for the shop doing the work, and completely understand where they are coming from as a customer service and reputation stand point. I would do the same.
The vehicle is back together, starts and runs, like before. Like its got a big block 3/4 race cam in it, with a cool exhaust note. Cam timing is off. I am considering putting a new bridge and control valve in it and seeing if that will do it. It's a 2010 with 163xxx on it, in great shape, I am not sure its cost effective to replace, the head and intake cam, chains etc for a commuter vehicle. I've owned it from 49xxx on ...

That little spring is from the cam bridge, it sits behind the mesh screen and ball. The same length spring is used in the exhaust cam sliding lobe assembly but the thickness of that coil spring is much thicker so you can rule that out. I would replace the cam bridge. Your lucky it was sitting right there and not clog a oil port to the lifter/s as ive seen it on multiple occasions. Also inspect the N205 valve, variable timing solenoid, the reverse threaded valve for the intake cam, if the center button/valve is not flat/flush it is defective and will trigger misfires and correlation codes. Search N205 valve on google for a reference as to what it should look like.

Side note, The labor to get to the tensioner, better yet, to change the chain and guides while doing the tensioner would have added 30 minutes additional labor to the job because you still have to remove all the same parts, minus the upper cover and cam bridge. And ALSO the chain should have been replaced because they do stretch and new revisions are out. My opinion, kind of bad advice telling to not change at least the chain more so than the guides. How i see it, you're in there already, you know their problematic parts, why not change it all? and to the updated parts? And not second guess or worry about the parts you did not change.

Jack, No fuel smell in the oil. Oil pressure has not been checked .. yet.. debating whether or not to drop the pan, there was no metal on the magnetic plug or sparkling oil.

Sam, Thank you. ... I know better, 40 yrs of maintenance experience and my gut instinct thought it would be best. I deferred to a shop that is supposed to "know" the product. They are "specialists" with a very good reputation. So it was just the tensioner ....

Now, not having pulled the bridge myself, and just seeing pictures of the back side of the bridge, would one not see that the screen, spring and check ball are missing ?

I will be retrieving the vehicle early this next week and plan on changing the cam bridge, and control valve. I can not see doing the recommended repairs - intake cam, bridge, control valve, potentially a new head, (depending on journal condition) and timing chains to prolong the life of the vehicle. That is the minimum recommendation, this shop would actually prefer to replace the engine as the amount of metal it made - if any - is unknown. The parts and labor involved would exceed the retail value of the vehicle.

I will report back once I have done the bridge and control valve. I want to inspect the scoring on the cam myself.

The screen blowing out on the bridge is a stupid common failure. And if that check valve and spring have come out, definitely need a whole new bridge.

Audi says it's actually OK, if not recommended, to remove the screen on an otherwise check ball still intact cam bridge. And seeing as how frequently the screen comes apart on these, I would say it's not a bad idea to remove it from even a brand new bridge just to prevent further issue.

For what it's worth, the adjuster that's part of the intake cam might also be damaged from this incident. Since it's easy enough to just replace the spool valve and bridge, sure, do that first. Then there's a basic setting to test the intake cam adjuster, I forget exactly how it's worded on these UDS cars (Uwe will probably come up with the answer).

The test will require you to hold the brake pedal (enough to trip the brake switch, anyway) and press the throttle to the floor and hold it there while the basic setting test is running. It will give you a result of pass or fail, you can also select live data of intake cam position before the test starts so you can see in realtime what's happening. The timing should start around 28 degrees and eventually retard all the way to around -33 to -35, feel like the engine is misfiring for a moment before it starts to advance the cam timing back up to its start position of 28 degrees and smooths right back out. Just keep holding the pedals until the test completes.

If the test fails and the cam timing doesn't change adequately, it will set a code immediately and then you'll also need to replace the intake cam itself to fix it. But hey, worth a shot to try just the bridge and spool valve first then re-evaluate. Would save a lot of money and work if it does end up being OK.

Then there's a basic setting to test the intake cam adjuster, I forget exactly how it's worded on these UDS cars (Uwe will probably come up with the answer).
Without seeing a scan so I can look up at the data for his particular ECU, I would at best be guessing.

Be forewarned if timing is out mechanically and there is FOD modified programming, it is indeed possible to xylophone a motor by running a full sweep timing basic settings operation in VCDS & because some schmuck deletes the diagnostic stack!

I was just simply putting it out there. There are many other brands with chain motors that yes, happen to almost never need chain service, or only at a much higher mileage. I understand your side to the T, but the shops side, and im not pointing fingers or talking down to/on anyone. But solely because these engines i'm sure many would agree on, are anything but "durable" and specifically have a spot light on "chain concerns", along with reimbursement from OEM , other than you requesting to not change it, seeing the car is in great shape and a daily, a new updated chain would have been a smart move. Point being, you deserve a beer for making it 160k miles on original chain and tensioner ha. Secondly, fixing these things everyday, I've seen a 60k mile A4's come in for a tensioner update with correlation codes because of chain stretch. Best on was a oxygen sensor replacement that returned on a flat bed 5 minutes later because the spool valve popped. If you truly enjoy your daily, say 30 minutes added labor for a new chain, and or guides id jump on it. I completely understand when funds come into play, because either way its expensive to pay for. I just really hate seeing someone spend a lot of money on a new tensioner, to only have a chain break after, and really be put in a position of fixing their car or scrapping it because its not worth it on an otherwise perfect car.

Results so far ... first and foremost ... I really do appreciate the input and help. It's been great.

I removed the bridge next and what I found made me fume a bit, and swore not to use the shop I had just been to EVER again for anything. The guy put the bridge back on - LEAVING - FOD in the oil passage of the bridge. The ring sitting on the bridge oil galley face literally fell out as I pulled the bridge off. I searched for any other bits in the bores, via endoscope, and magnet. None found. ....

the vehicle now starts and runs normally. I ran out of time last night to put the VCDS on, gather and clear the current DTC's, which I will post the before and after scans. ...

the caveat here ... the only part I have yet to recover is the check ball from the bridge, everything else of consequence has been recovered.

As promised the scans. I don't feel they really show the picture of the actual happenings due to the previous shop(s) resetting the codes.

A simple recap for future troubleshooting purposes and information that just may "save" someone some real grief.

When the problem started, it was simple cam position sensor codes. The vehicle also started to crank longer before starting, and as mentioned above an occasional noise my missus could here from outside the vehicle during morning starts - i couldn't hear them from inside the vehicle, until i rolled own the window every morning prior to start.
The code progressed to "unresolved cam position" and "a failure to fully retard" for starting. I retrieved those via my phone and if I could figure out where they got saved to i would be willing to share. I was trying to get ahead of what ever it was ... and not having the knowledge that SHOULD have been provided to me by AUDI.

I have been the registered owner of this vehicle since 2013. It's not a "robust design", these items chain, guides, control valve, and bridge all need to be "life limited" parts and not "on condition". It could have the other way for me, catastrophic failure. The maintenance schedule for the cam system needs to be adjusted, and published. From VAG's recent behavior they have certainly tarnished the "brand"

I do have the log file of the vehicle running and driving to to get the readiness code set. the adaptation is running at -4.02. base timing is at 28.00 and does go to the -33 area the scheduled and actual run right together while being graphed and the -4.02 is rock steady.

All seems to be happy and running normally... and I have virtually eliminated 2 shops I trust. My problems could have all been avoided had I stuck to my guns. I don't appreciate people telling me how to do my job, and I dislike doing it to others, these people i won't have an issue with vocalizing my wishes in the future - IF - I ever use them again ...

UWE, if you can let me know how to post the advanced measuring blocks I recorded or if you think the "collective" could benefit from them I would be more than willing ...

I'm not sure how you recorded them. If you used [Log] or [Save] in VCDS, the files are just plain text. Open them with Notepad and paste the contents here, preferably between CODE tags. If you recorded them some other way, I'll need more details before I can advise.

I have been the registered owner of this vehicle since 2013. It's not a "robust design", these items chain, guides, control valve, and bridge all need to be "life limited" parts and not "on condition".
Thinking out loud here: I wonder if part of the problem is the very light-weight oils, and/or combined with the very long (10,000 miles!) oil change intervals that VW specifies these days?

A reciprocating piston engine is not a sewing machine, yet they call for ever-thinner oils. I had the oil changed on a 2018 Tiguan at the dealer about a month ago and they used 0w20! I believe the primary reason they do this is so they can get incrementally better fuel economy numbers out of the EPA tests.

Uwe, Thanks for correcting my post. The advanced measuring blocks were logged via VCDS log function, and is an excel file, I will do my best to put them between the code tags, when I get home.

Your comments on oil may bring in a whole "barrage" of comments. I do agree however that manufactures calling for 0wxx spec oils seems a bit crazy. My A4 calls for the 0w40. These engines are known for oil usage, I changed from the factory / dealer "brand" oil to another brand, that I have used since synthetics came out.

This simple change in "brands" took the oil usage in this engine from a quart every 2500-3000 miles to 1 in 5000 or so. I also then change oil and filter at that time, rather than add a quart and go another 5000 miles. I will only run full synthetic oil.
