Hi,

I have the car for well over 8 years. Once or twice a year when I try to start the engine nothing happens and it says SAFE on the dashboard. The only solution to this is to remove the positive terminal from the battery for 30 seconds. This is what I get with VCDS immediately after the issue occurred. Any ideas on where the issue is, I think that after 8 years it is time to be fixed.

Code:
Removed. Data from a clone/pirate/hacked version of VCDS is not welcome here.

17978 - Engine Start Blocked by Immobilizer

That looks the likely culprit to me - it could be a communications glitch between the transponder in the key and the receiver ring in the ignition barrel.
A friend's old Seat Leon used to do it occasionally.

See if clearing that fault code will allow it to start.

There's also more info here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17978/P1570/005488

Edit - having said that, something's not right here:

It's not unknown for the connections to the immobiliser sense coil to be intermittent, would be worth checking in that area.
