had car in body shop after a bump no major damage just bumper respray but since I got the car back the boot wont open and two bulbs are out, everything was fine when I dropped it off not sure if its something they have done or a coincidence. im not sure if the boot can be open from the inside to access the motor or if short to ground is just a wire faulty or unplugged

Based on the fault codes you have there, I'd say you need to get a wiring diagram for this car and attack the trunk and bulb problems with a multimeter.

I'm not sure whether the regulations in the UK/EU require it, but here in NAR, it's an absolute requirement for there to be a mechanical release from the inside.

Also see: Where do I get a Wiring Diagram?

There is a mechanical release on the inside. Remove a small circular flap from lower rear lid trim and you'll see a small handle to push to one side.

I had exactly the same issue with one of my old audis after a rear end bump, it was the boot lock itself, the circuit board giot cracked in the accident, new lock and was good as new, try also opening it on the remote key that may also open it as the boot handle is electronically operated

Lookimg at the fault codes and the history I would guess the lock is faulty, take it back to the bodyshop and have them put a new lock in it, what happened with ours was that the lock got stressed when the car was hit, this caused a hairline fracture in the board and it wouldnt unlock, try thumping the tailgate on the outside and the bottom with the flat of your hand whilst trying the unlck button (not too hard) it sometime makes enough contact to get the lock to pop and you can get the tailgate open.

Virtually every VW Ive ever owned has had a door lock problem and ive replaced dozens on other VWs over the years they are made in the same factory as Walkers cris packets !

What’s the possibility of the car being in the oven has caused a wire to melt?

Is that a bad fault to be getting? I’m no auto electrician so I’m not fully aware how major some of the faults are, spoke to garage today they said they scanned it for fault codes and got the errors I got but didn’t scan it before they done my work which to me seems crazy, you think they would scan it 1st to cover themselves and with it being a accident repair shop they have to give a Report to the insurance company, plus they never mentioned any of the faults when the car was collected, I think they know it happened while they had it

This bothers me so much.........

Jack: apropos of OP's description of the problem and even more concerning - this bothers me greatly:

Code:
1 Fault Found:
00950 - Central Locking Motor - tailgate (V53); UNLOCK
            007 - Short to Ground
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 01100111
                    Fault Priority: 4
                    Fault Frequency: 14
                    Reset counter: 194
                    Mileage: 159752 km
                    Time Indication: 0
                    Date: 2000.00.00
                    Time: 12:19:43

I reckon Uwe's suggestion is prudent : get a wiring diagram & a multi-meter and start chasing wires?

Based on the scan I would be looking closely at the wiring that goes through the rubber boots for your hatch issues, MK5 tend to have breaks in the wiring inside the rubber boot. Probably failed at the shop because they were the last ones opening and closing the hatch while making repairs to bumper.

If it was just a bumper they wouldnt have put the car in the oven just the bumper, ovens dont usually melt wiring they normally go up to 60oc which is the same as hot bath water.

If the tailgate was damaged and theyve stripped the lock and boot handle that's a different story

Managed to remove the boot tr but didn’t get chance to test as I only had 30mins spare but noticed that the rear wiper doesn’t work either but will spray the water ok and also notice water droplets on the mechanism for the wiper motor, is there a fuse that would control this also check the wires where they go into the boot lid they seem ok hopefully il get an hour after work tomorrow to get this sorted

Just trace the wires with a tone generator and using WD to verify where everything is and stop the magic answer seeking behavior, don't you think it would take much less time? You have VCDS you could use it with some block values in 0x46 and the aforementioned, no?

Did you sort the ignition switch yet?
