Golf 6 MK6 Xenon to Halogen Help pls

Hi everyone,

I am new to the Vag Com world, at least to this level of depth, and am pretty impressed with the support on these topics.

I am using our car club’s cable to configure my Osram Xenarc LED headlights on my 2010 GTI. I’ve browsed the forums and found one thread that was probably the most help so far, but since I am new to this I think I’ll need some more help haha

So here we go. I have a 2010 GTI that came stock with Xenon and AFS. I owned a 2.5 with Halogens before and had purchased a set of the Osram Xenarc LEDs (https://www.osram.com/ecat/LEDrivin...01_2903369/PP_EUROPE_Europe_eCat/ZMP_4055174/) that were plug and play for the Halogen car. Now I think you know where this is going haha
The headlights are a 10pin and the xenon harness is a 14pin connector. We managed to make our own reverse harness and everything, well almost everything, is working. The issue at this point is that the controls are not working 100%, low beams are always on, can’t control DRLs separately.

I am guessing that disconnecting the gateway and removing it in the settings as outlined in this post https://forums.ross-tech.com/showth...enon-to-standard&highlight=Golf+xenon+halogen could work but figured I’d check in here for advice.

I do have the LED tails, I think there might be some settings I need to consider as well. I will be able to post the scan this week as soon as I get it off the laptop (forgot to do it) and will post it here. Wanted to start the conversation anyway

Hi Seb

If you've made your own harness, are using lights that we have no idea what the pins represent and are retrofitting a non VW part, then collectively this spells trouble. It's impossible for anyone to help. This is a project that someone would have to undertake to be able to assist. In this forum we recommend the use of factory wiring diagrams and retrofit genuine parts. Third party parts are not supported I'm afraid.

Hi there!

Well the Osram (OEM parts provider) headlights have the exact same connectors/pins as the OEM housing. Hence why a simple reverse harness from a 14 pin car to a 10 pin housing worked just fine. This is the exact same scenario that I linked to in this thread - Xenon car to halogen headlights. Everything is working, high beams, low beams, DRLs, signals with NO coding at all. All I am trying to figure out is what base coding I should be using to tell the car that Halogen headlights are installed so that the low beams aren’t staying on all the time.

I really hope the community can point out some options that we can explore. Pls help...

Main thing that’s not working besides the AFS error messages are the low beams can‘t be turned off and DRLs can be controlled with auto headlight switch.

If your new lights are "plug & play" with halogens, why do you still have a Xenon controller in the car?

Try the following:

1. Open BCM 09 Central Electric and select security access
2. Code is 31347 and click do it
3. Select adaptations menu and search for "(2)-Daytime Running Lights- Tagfahrlicht Aktivierung durch BAP oder Bedienfolge möglich"
4. Set to active.
5. Go onto your light options menu in the infotainment and remove the tick from daytime running lights.

Separately, you will also need to go into the Gateway module and remove the tick in the installation list for 55, otherwise those errors will remain.

I don't think this will work on a PQ35 BCM that doesn't even use UDS.

I’ll try the gateway removal first to see how that impacts the low beam functionality. And if it does I’ll try a couple DRL options.

Couple questions:

1. Do either of you know if I have to physically disconnect the AFS module?
2. Are there any changes you think are necessary for byte 18 to tell the BCM that halogen lights are installed?

You can remove it but it'll involve re-wiring as the gateway will pickup on the installations. Try disabling it in the gateway.
You can try changes in Byte 18.

I would definitely physically remove the AFS master and take it out of the gateway installation list. You might need a resistor between the unused CAN low/high wires but it'll probably be fine for now.

Given you have a non-zero value in byte 18, I'd also suggest changing that to something appropriate for a halogen based vehicle (with LED tails) as that's what these lights are designed to fit. It's easy enough to restore to the existing behaviour.

You should also change the other bits of the BCM coding to match a halogen based car too.

Alright, progress!!!

Removing the AFS module physically and from the gateway, allowed us to turn off the headlights.

Now for some reason we are unable to change byte 18 to either 1F or 21 which based on research should be the setting for Halogen with LED tails.

Any thoughts on why that might be?

Neither of them are options in the dropdown menu, and typing in the values isn’t working. Not sure why. Right now Byte 18 is set to 15. Does that mean that the BCM can’t accept any other codes, other than the ones in the dropdown?

Update: We Never started the engine after the changes. Now we got a few other wonky things that we believe probably have to do with byte 18 still being set to a Xenon car.
