    2011 JSW TDI: No Crank

    I am looking for some help with direction on troubleshooting a no crank condition on my stock 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. I purchased this car from a pre-owned dealership out of state and trailered it home. The car started fine multiple times when I was inspecting prior to purchase, but after I got it home, I started experiencing an intermittent no crank and a multitude of strange electrical issues. Now, the no crank condition is continuous.

    From looking at wiring diagrams, both the no crank and strange electrical issues seem to trace back to the body control module (BCM), J519. VCDS shows that the computer can see that the clutch is depressed, and the key is being taken to start, however I’m not seeing control voltage at the starter relay (1.74 V measured at the relay terminal regardless of key position). I can get the engine running by either jumping the load contacts on the starter relay or by push starting the vehicle, but most BCM functions do not work.

    This problem has been going on for months, so I’ve performed multiple autoscans. One of the autoscans I performed showed two fault priority 1 codes on address 09 related to Terminal 30 left and right being open circuited (00927 and 01516). Today, these codes were not active, but measuring block 31 says Terminal 30 voltage is 17.75 V and measuring block 38 says Terminal 30 voltage is implausible for left, right, and reference. It is not clear what is referred to by left and right, so I’ve done a no-load check of powers and grounds at the connector for J519, and everything is satisfactory (I have not tested the circuit under load due to being unable to backprobe the connectors and lacking a piercing probe). The only potential power problem I’ve found is some black residue on fuse SB16 and minor socket distortion, but changing/jumping the fuse did not change the problem, so I haven’t pursued fuse box replacement.

    Since I don’t have a smoking gun, I’m looking for some advice on what to do next. I’ve been primarily focused on the no crank, however I’ve peeked into some of the other electrical gremlins and found that most of the time, the computer sees the input, but it does not respond (e.g. door lock command). Money is tight now, so I’m really trying to find something concrete before firing the parts cannon. What would you do next?

    ii.	successfully push-started car
    iii.	jumped J682’s load side terminals with key in run and car started
    b.	VCDS shows Terminal 50 CAN-Input ZAS changes from OFF to ON when the key is taken to start, however Terminal 50 CAN-Output BCM never changes
    c.	VCDS shows clutch position is sensed by changing from 0 to 1 in measuring block 6

    How about a fresh battery or checking connections to it with a trickle charge and test the DFM for the alternator or faulty clutch freewheel pulley?

    All my voltage testing has been done while hooked up to a battery charger. I’m not pursuing a battery or charging issue because the engine cranks normally when I take manual control over the starter relay. If my no-crank were related to the battery or charging system, the engine would not crank whether the start signal was coming from J519 or from me.

    I could really use some help understanding the various voltages I’m finding in the VCDS measuring blocks for J519. (all these are measured key on engine off)
    • Measuring Block 031: “Voltage Term.(30)” reads 17.75 V.
    • Measuring Block 038: “Voltage Term. 30 left,” “Voltage Term. 30 right,” and “Voltage Term. 30 refer.” all read “Implausible.” When I hover over the field, it says “Range: 0.0…20.0 V” and “Specification: 11.0…15.0 V.” Does this mean the module is seeing something outside of the given range?
    • Measuring Block 133: “Voltage” reads 12.80 V.
    • Measuring Block 135: “Voltage” reads 7.60 V.
    • Measuring Block 136: “Voltage” reads 10.60 V.

    The first two measuring blocks say they are for terminal 30, but their values disagree. The latter three aren’t labeled, but they also disagree. What do I make of these values?

    I wouldn't assume this if I were you!

    Oh those values say your charger is set too high, no and did you know the BCM can shed or shut down components to save as breaker or keep alive?

    What about grounds, terminal 50 or X?

    That's really, excessively high. What kind of charger are you using? Use a volt meter and check if it's really applying that much, and if so, toss it and get a better-behaved charger, because the one that puts nearly 18V into your car is downright dangerous.

    It's certainly possible that the firmware in the module objects to voltages as high in the previous paragraph and considers it implausibly high.

    From reading SSP 873403 (previous generation design, but closest relevant SSP I could find), I am aware that the BCM performs load management, however it does so with the goal of preserving the ability to start the car. Since it would not make sense for the starter relay to be load managed, that's why I'm focused on the no-start, and not the numerous other electrical function losses. With that said, I am seeing less than 2 volts on my starter relay control side from J519, regardless of the key being in the on or start position. Seeing this is what prompted me to verify that the BCM was seeing the key position; measuring block 63 confirms it is, and yet the BCM is still not producing the correct output (battery voltage).

    The charger is an automatic float style, and I've never seen it get above 14.x V. To validate, however, I did go re-perform the measurement.
    Conditions: key on, engine off, charger not connected, battery reading 12.07 V at the terminals.
    Results:
    • Address 01, measuring block 12: Supply Voltage (Terminal 30) = 11.93 V (known good module reading used for comparison)
    • Address 09, measuring block 31: Voltage Term.(30) = 17.75 V

    The 17.75 V reading certainly stands out, however I haven't used VCDS enough to have confidence in calling this a smoking gun for a bad module. That measuring block 31 and 38 both have Terminal 30 measurements and they are different only adds to my confusion. I can't think of anything typical which would cause the high reading beyond what you have all suggested, however I would appreciate a sanity check in this department.

    If the BCM is showing 17+V when everything else (including an actual volt meter) is showing reasonable voltages, then my gut says that BCM is wonky.

    For anybody reading this thread in the future, my issues were resolved by replacing the body control module. I wrote down my argument for a friend to do an independent review on, and they agreed with my logic, so I spent the $340 with confidence. I've included my write-up below in case it helps anybody else:

    If a control module is supplied with power and ground, then inputs should produce predictable outputs.

    Power: In the fuse component locations (diagrams 802/9 and 802/29), the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) is listed under fuses SB3, SB16, SB26, SC15, SC17, and SC24. These power feeds enter the module at varying locations (fuse number (fuse rating) @ terminal number (diagram number)):
    • SB3 (5 A) @ T52a/24 (91/3)
    • SB16 (30 A) @ T52c/42 (91/3)
    • SB26 (30 A) @ T52a/1 (91/3)
    • SC15 (20 A) @ T52b/1 (91/4)
    • SC17 (10 A) @ T52c/1 (91/16)
    • SC24 (20 A) @ T52b/42 (94/11)

    All these terminals measured at battery voltage with the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) plugged in while the key was on and the engine was off, and were able to carry enough current to brightly light a 21 W bulb (10 W bulb used on SB3), thus the control module has adequate power.

    Ground: In the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) component locations (diagram 895/19), ground is listed under varying pins (terminal number (diagram number)):
    • T52a/23 (91/14)
    • T52a/42 (91/8)
    • T52b/52 (91/14)
    • T52c/5 (91/14)

    With the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) plugged in, the key on, and the engine off, all these terminals measured at 0.00 V with respect to battery negative (showing no high resistance ground) and negative battery voltage with respect to battery positive (showing no open ground). Additionally, all these grounds were able to carry enough current to brightly light a 21 W bulb (10 W bulb used on T52a/23). The control module has adequate grounds.

    Input: The owner’s manual (page 182) lists four steps to start the car: 1) depress and hold brake pedal, 2) depress and hold clutch pedal, 3) move gear shifter into neutral, and 4) turn ignition switch to start. (There is no “SAFE” or “Immobilizer active!” message on the instrument cluster, so security permissives are being ruled out (owner’s manual page 179).)
    1. Brake: Power comes from fuse SC2 (diagram 105/5) to the brake lamp switch (F) (diagram 105/15). The switch provides output to the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) (T52c/17) (diagram 105/3) and the engine control module (J623) (T94/21). Measuring block 01-006-2 changes from xxxxxx00 to xxxxxx11 when the brake pedal is depressed, showing the switch is providing output to the engine control module (J623). Terminal T52c/17 measures 0.77 volts when the brake pedal is not depressed and 13.60 volts when it is. This voltage change shows that vehicle electrical control module system (J519) sees the brake pedal input.
    2. Clutch: Power comes from fuse SB22 (diagram 105/4) to the clutch position sensor (G476) (diagram 105/15). The switch provides output to the vehicle electrical control module system system (J519) (T52c/30) (diagram 105/2) and the engine control module (J623) (T94/63). Measuring block 01-006-2 changes from xxxxx0xx to xxxxx1xx when the clutch pedal is depressed, showing the switch is providing output to the engine control module (J623). Terminal T52c/30 measures 14.13 volts when the clutch pedal is not depressed, and 0 volts when it is. This voltage change shows that the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) sees the clutch pedal input.
    3. Neutral: The transmission code is LHD (trunk sticker), which is a 6-speed manual transmission with a part number beginning in 02Q (repair manual number D3E8001FD66). The 02Q transmission does not have a physical neutral switch, only a reverse position switch (F4 shown on component location diagram 851/12). (While there are gear indications on the instrument cluster, they are likely calculated from engine and vehicle speed.) Measuring block 09-064-01 changes from Release P/N (park/neutral): “PN Inactive” to “PN Active” when the clutch is pressed, meaning this permissive must overlap with the clutch permissive.
    4. Ignition: Power comes from fuse SB6 (diagram 105/4) to the steering column electronics control module (J527) (diagram 105/3), through the ignition/starter switch (D), back into the steering column electronics control module (J527), and out to the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) (T52c/14). This terminal measures 0.01 V when the key is in the run position, and battery voltage when the key is turned to the start position. When the key is taken from run to start, measuring block 09-063 changes from Terminal 50 (Hardware): “Term 50 Off,” Terminal 50 (FB): “OFF,” Terminal 50 (CAN-Input ZAS): “OFF,” and Terminal 50 (CAN-Output BCM): “OFF,” to “Term 50 On,” “OFF,” “ON,” and “OFF,” respectively. (Note: FB stands for ?, ZAS stands for zylinderabschaltung or cylinder deactivation, and BCM stands for body control module). The vehicle electrical control module system (J519) sees the ignition switch input.


    Output: Upon receiving required inputs, the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) should provide power to the terminal 50 power supply relay (J682) (T52b/29) (diagram 105/3). The terminal voltage does not change from 0.06 volts with respect to the negative battery terminal or negative battery voltage with respect to the positive battery terminal when both the clutch and brake are depressed and the key is taken to start. The resistance between the vehicle electrical control module system (J519) output terminal (T52b/29) and ground is 56.5 ohms with the terminal 50 power supply relay (J682) plugged in, and 3k ohms with the relay removed. The vehicle electrical control module system (J519) is not being shorted to ground, yet it is not producing the expected output.

    Conclusion: The vehicle electrical control module system (J519) is faulty. Despite being supplied power and ground, as well as brake, clutch, and ignition inputs, it is not producing an output to energize the terminal 50 power supply relay (J682).

    I did not include this in the write-up, however I measured all of the terminals on the body control module with it plugged in. I was looking for any anomaly which would explain why the body control module failed, but everything was as expected on all of the terminals. Instead of using a piercing probe on the numerous wires, I found it easier to take the cover off the body control module and probe the pins on the printed circuit board. This proved to me that I did not have an issue present which would cause the new module to fail as soon as I plugged it in.

    For comparison, these are my as-left values:
    • Measuring Block 031: “Voltage Term.(30)” reads 14.25 V.
    • Measuring Block 038: “Voltage Term. 30 left,” “Voltage Term. 30 right,” and “Voltage Term. 30 refer.” read 14.20 V, 14.25V, and 14.25 V, respectively.
    • Measuring Block 063: "Terminal 50 (CAN-Output BCM)" now changes from "OFF" to "ON" and the engine cranks.
    • Measuring Block 133: “Voltage” reads 14.40 V
    • Measuring Block 135: The fourth measuring group no longer is labeled "Voltage," and the field now reads "Invalid."
    • Measuring Block 136: “Voltage” still reads 10.60 V.

    Finally, in the 236 miles I've driven the car since replacing the module, only one code has returned:

    Note that this code is on a different module, but an electrical fault on the databus is still concerning. However, given the intermittent nature, and single fault frequency, I only plan on trending this for now.
