Hi,
I have a 2011 TDI Sportwagen with P0401 and P240F codes. The first began intermittently (for several months) but in the last several weeks the MIL seems to stay on all the time. The second code came more recently. When the code was on-again/off-again, I didn't take it too seriously.
The radio stopped working; an after market radio was installed. The car has not been modified in connection with Dieselgate. We have had the car since it was new in October 2010.
First, how long can I drive the car before problems get more serious? (There do not seem to be any driveability issues at this time. I haven't noticed any changes in mileage either.)
Second, how could I go about narrowing the problem?
The Ross-Tech P0401 page suggests three options: a wiring fault, a clogged/malfunctioning valve, and a clogged system (tube?). Will the second code help locate the fault? I have not been able to locate further information on that code. Would it help to drive around logging the EGR data for a while? And, if it would, what would I be looking for?
Third, how should I go about fixing the problem once I've narrowed it as much as possible?
How might I address each of the three options? Would I just wiggle the connectors or is there a specialized test that I have missed. (There is a fault mentioned towards the end of the autoscan "Address 4F: Centr. Electr. II (J520) Labels:. 1K0-907-532.clb" but this has never shown up as a code before the autoscan. Is this a clue?
If I do need to clean the EGR system and/or replace the valve, is there any way to know what needs to be done beforehand (so I can order the parts) or is it a matter of finding out once it is disassembled?
Where would I look for good directions on removal, cleaning, and replacement? I've seen youtubes and posts but, taken together, there isn't much clarity. Specifically, would the intake manifold need to be removed and would components behind the engine need to be dealt with? Looking at some of the forum posts, it seems that sometimes the wrong things get done and the right things don't get done. (If you send me to the resources mentioned elsewhere that is OK.)
