Research shows its a common fault on the VAG range, mainly the Golfs. New thermostat and or water pump solves the issues.

Hello.. coolant pump on this EA888 gen3 CJEB is mechanical but integrated with electric engine temperature management module [thermostat]....so it is advisable to log coolant temperature at engine and radiator outlet as well as thermostat duty cycle in real time
with engine running to see how the thermo regulates temperature..... also check water pump weep hole for small leakage[ if any is found, replace the whole unit>>>that's thermo + water pump....cheap at ecstuning.com
