Coding rejected, Error 31: Request out of range

I have recently bought 2017 Tiguan. Did my first scan and all is good except two modules where it says interface not compatible. I am trying to do some instrument tweaks like needle sweep,refuel quantity in AID but it won't accept any changes and every time I get Coding rejected, Error 31: Request out of range message. I have genuine Hex+Can cable and running the latest vcds software. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Not every instrument cluster supports every feature. Trying to code in a feature that the cluster doesn't support will result in "Request out of range".

It's also possible you may have to change the WSC, Importer, and Equipment Number for a coding change to take.

Try setting WSC to 01369, Importer to 210, and Equipment Number to 40505 in the User Interface and Identification tab of the Options screen in VCDS. Then click [Save]. Exit and re-start VCDS for this to become effective. Then try one simple change at a time, for example "Gauge Test/Needle Sweep (Staging) active" in Byte 01.

Had a strange one last week
2 cars both with 1.6 Tdi CAYC one a 2011 and the other 2015
I retrofitted cruise and went to code the Engine ECU
2015 coded fine, but the 2011 had the error 31

Tried several things, but nothing worked. I made a note of what had to be changed and coded it with VCP and it accepted it.

The VCDS Manual online on our web site gives help to Noobs...

Take a look at the Options screen: https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/option_screen.php

Note there are two tabs - Port and Protocol Options & User Interface and Identification.

Click on the User Interface and Identification tab. Now you will see the WSC, the Importer Code, and the Equipment number.

Change these as Uwe has suggested you do.

Guage sweep and tried to change the colour of AID

I have noticed only Instrument (17) coding gets rejected.

Rest I can do tweaks without any issue

Which suggests that the coding change(s) you are trying to make is not applicable to your Instrument ECU, if you detail what coding change(s) you are trying to make then someone may be able to suggest other options?

hmm........ you do know that later model MQB platform vehicles (like the Tiggy mk2) use a different security code for the hex17 module? In the past, the SA was 20103, but for post MY16 built units, the SA is 47115.

So, if you are using instructions from early MQB vehicles, this could be the problem - albeit I would have thought that VCDS software would return a more specific error message!!

Do you try to do both changes at once? Try to enable only needle sweep, that should work.

For the color change, there’s instructions on how to do a few adaptation changes to 5F and your able to change the colors from ambient light setting in car menu. Does not change the color of ambient lights as Tiguan only has one color led bars but it changes AID and MIB color schemes.

Also sometimes I have found that on an Error 31, you need to let the car go to sleep before a coding on a module is accepted, especially if the coding is related to another module that you have just coded.

It's also possible you may have to change the WSC, Importer, and Equipment Number for a coding change to take.

Try setting WSC to 01369, Importer to 210, and Equipment Number to 40505 in the User Interface and Identification tab of the Options screen in VCDS. Then click [Save]. Exit and re-start VCDS for this to become effective. Then try one simple change at a time, for example "Gauge Test/Needle Sweep (Staging) active" in Byte 01.

I did these changes but still the same. Can't do guage sweep or anyother mod through long coding.

Well, the only reason that I can think of for "Request out of Range" if you've done that is your Instrument Cluster doesn't support the gauge sweep.

It doesn't matter, the adaptation channels are universal and the guide is generic.

If you don't find the adaptation channel that unfortunately means that the BCM is not supporting this function.

And also the same goes for instrument cluster like Uwe already mentioned.

Edit:

You have CG BCM, I have CF and that supports the color setting. That is interesting because you have a newer BCM.
