Hi Ross-Tech Community:

I just installed an Auto Light Switch on my wife's 2017 Tiguan Limited and I came across an unexpected problem.
The Auto switch works well overall, but it looks like VW set up the Tiguan lighting such that the Instrument Cluster lights do not come on with Parking lights - they only come on when the switch is in the Low Beam On mode.

The reason this is a problem, is that the Auto switch I installed appears to turn on the Parking lights first (at a certain low ambient light level), and then turn on the Low Beam lights at a different low ambient lighting level. The trouble is that there are often times when the Auto switch runs the Parking lights (which is sufficient given the outside visibility), but the Instrument Cluster sensor is dimming the cluster lights to a level that is unusable. So, invariably my wife ends up manually turning the Low Beam lights on, thus defeating the Auto switch.

I installed the Auto switch, because she hardly ever remembers to turn it back off - I coded Central Electronics to turn the lights off with Ignition Off (so we are not killing the battery), but I am trying to conserve the life on the Low Beam bulbs. With the current setup, she ends up driving around day/night with the Low-Beams on...

I drive a MY 2013 GTI and previously owned a MY 2011 Golf 2.5, and have had Euro switches installed on both of these cars. In both of them the Instrument Cluster lights came on with the Parking Lights on, which is how most other cars out there (at least used to be set up).

My understanding is that the 2017 Tiguan Limited, is essentially built on the MK6 Golf platform, I find it odd this feature works differently, but most importantly, I am wondering if anyone here knows if this could be coded to function just like it does in the Golf/GTI.

Please let me know what are some of the thoughts/suggestions from this group - I have browsed the internet, and have seen others reporting this same exact behavior with their Tigs, but did not come across any fix for it yet.

Thank you and below is a scan after the last set of tweak I made on the Tig:

Hi,

in your instrument cluster (module 17) there is an adaption channel named "Illumination_algorithm-Scale_switching_algorithm". What is it's current value?
You can try the value "lds", which should probably fix your problem.

Interesting. I cannot find that in the channel in his cluster. I wonder if it could be this?

^^^ TBAx's suggestion for ENG125906-ENG126396-Illumination_algorithm-Scale_switching_algorithm is the traditional way for fixing this problem in MQB platform vehicles in US models. In RoW models, the lds setting is factory set.

I had thought that the "odd" behavior of instrument illumination was peculiar to the NAR Golfs and later Tiggys - but OP's post suggests that it's more endemic to cars in the land-of-the-free!

I'm aware that allowing the instrument lights to not illuminate is a brain prompt to the driver to switch-on the headlights in dusk conditions, but is this part of the US road rules?

Thank you all for your individual suggestions.

My wife has been using the car today, and I have not had a chance to test out these theories/suggestion.
However, I plan to do this early tomorrow morning, and I'll post my findings.

Just for clarity though, I want to restate the fact that my own (2) Golfs 2011 2.5L and 2013 GTI, as well as my brother's (2) Golfs, have all been upgraded with Euro switches, and switching the "Parking" lights on turns on the instrument cluster lights - without any special coding.
Those (4) cars all still have the dusk reminder behavior, where the cluster lights gradually dim down to remind drivers to turn on the lights, but the cluster lights come on as soon as the parking lights are switched on (and continue to stay on when the Low-Beams are turned on).
By contrast, the Tig's instrument cluster lights do not turn on until the lights switch is turned to the Low-Beam position. Turning the switch to "parking" lights mode, properly illuminates all the correct lights on the outside of the car, and also the back lighting of the center console controls. It just doesn't turn on the gauges back-lighting... This is the behavior I find very odd.

All these cars I mentioned are NAR vehicles. Researching this issue on line, I stumbled upon a couple of posts where other NAR Tiguan owners mentioned they have experienced the same issue - but no one really had a fix for it.

As I mentioned, I'll try the group suggestions in the morning, but wanted to clarify that this issue is not necessarily a NAR vehicles related issue, but rather a Tiguan (or at least a pre-MQB NAR Tiguan related issue).

Thanks again for all the feedback.

One more thing I forgot to ask or comment on:

So my Tiguan is a 2017 MY, but it is the "Limited" edition, which means it is the pre-MQB body style.
This may be a known fact out there but just in case, in US VW kept selling the "old" body style Tiguan (as the Limited edition) alongside the "new" MQB based Tiguan.
Talking with someone at the dealer, I was told the reason for this is that at that time pretty much the entire lineup of VW vehicles sold in NA were made either in the US or Mexico, and the only car still made in Germany was the older body style Tiguan. So, they wanted to have at least one German made vehicle for sale (just to keep in line with the whole Das Auto marketing strategy). So, the old Tig was kept on the sales floors until the Aerton arrived in the US in 2018 (which at this point is made in Germany), and is now what keeps the lineage intact...

Anyway, that's how our Tig is part of that older body style series, even though it is a 2017 MY.

If I find the ENG141644 -- Scale_dimming_algorithm[/B][/B] (Abblendlicht / Nebellicht | Autolicht / Abblendlicht / Nebellicht | Parking light) adaptation, should I still check its current value and potentially try to set it to "lds". or is that a MQB related setting only?

Thank you.

This may be the source of confusion them. The OP's vehicle is not an MQB. The "2017 Tiguan Limited" sold in the US was the old body-style PQ based Tiguan.

"lds" will not be an option.

The options will be:
  • Abblendlicht / Nebellicht (low beams / fog lights)
  • Autolicht / Abblendlicht / Nebellicht (automatic light / low beams /fog lights)
  • Parking light

I would start by checking what it's currently set to, but since there are only three choices in total, there's likely little harm in trying the other two.

Folks:

I experimented with the suggested Lighting Adaptation, and the effort was met with total success! Thank you all for your suggestions and direction.
So, Module-17 did indeed have a lights Adaptation "ENG141644 -- Scale_dimming_algorithm" listed, with the (3) parameter settings available (per Uwe's last post). The factory setting was Autolicht / Abblendlicht / Nebellicht (automatic light / low beams /fog lights), and changing that to the "Parking light" value fixed the problem.

Now, when I manually set the switch to the "Parking" position, as well as when the Auto Switch determines the Parking Lights mode needs to be engaged, the Cluster backlighting comes on, along with all the rest of the instrumentation lighting and the appropriate exterior light.

Thank you all for your time and suggestion. I REALLY appreciate it. In the grand scheme of things, this was a small little feature setting, but it bugged me to no end, so I am really happy there was an easy fix for it.

As a curiosity, before I attempted to make any changes to the Tig, I wanted to level set on this setting by checking the factory value for this Adaptation, on my 2013 GTI. To my surprise, this adaptation was completely missing from the list the GTI... Instead, there was a "IDE11997 -- Scaling_dimming_algorithm" adaptation, but when selected it returned an "ERROR - Channel Not Available" value.

Not sure if that is to be expected or not, but I would have expected Module - 17 on both vehicles to be essentially the same, but they are not.
It seems the Tig version is much, much newer rev HW/FW... for whatever it is worth, below are the details regarding Module - 17 on the 2013 GTI...

Your Tiguan is four model years newer, and the vendor for the cluster is likely different. I'm not at all surprised there are differences.
