Hello all,

I have a 2019 Mk7.5 Golf R, US-spec, and I'm wondering if anyone with a similar car (or anyone at all) might be able to shed some light on this. While following the steps here to enable Adaptive Lane Tracking, I looked over the meaning of the other bytes in the Long Coding interface for the "A5-Frt Sens. Drv. Assist" module, and I noticed two things I have questions/concerns about. I chose NOT to show experimental coding options if that matters.

First, Byte 6 (Country Variant) is set to 00000010 on my car, which doesn't correspond to any of the 3 options shown in the VCDS dropdown. The only options in VCDS are:
01 - Rest of World
04 - Europe
06 - China

Second, Byte 7 (Suspension) is set to 00000001, which according to VCDS means "Steel Suspension". But my car has DCC, and VCDS even shows an option for DCC in its dropdown menu for this byte. I decided not to change anything here, but I'm curious why it would be this way from the factory (I bought the vehicle new). Is there anyone here with a Mk7.5 Golf that has DCC and Lane Assist who can check this value on their own vehicle? Is it possible this was a coding error at the factory? Or if this coding is correct for a vehicle with DCC, is it possible that the descriptions for the possible values in the dropdown are backwards?

Full auto-scan below. By the way, in terms of the fault codes, are any of those normal or sometimes expected? The car is a little over a week old and this was my first time using VCDS with it.

First, Byte 6 (Country Variant) is set to 00000010 on my car, which doesn't correspond to any of the 3 options shown in the VCDS dropdown. The only options in VCDS are:
01 - Rest of World
04 - Europe
06 - China

Your 02 is NAR, which is correct. The normal (non-experimental) labels are done by Ross-Tech and sometimes lack variants (often because they are not yet confirmed), while including others, that might not be as intuitive in the experimental labels.

The experimental labels don't mention DCC, the only options there are "steel springs", "air chassis" and "magnetic ride". When only considering these possibilities "steel springs" is the correct selection, as DCC is neither air powered nor has magnetic dampers. I expect this to be wrong in the normal labels.

TBAx, thanks for the quick reply! I have experience coding BMWs and a bit coding Porsches, but I'm new to VCDS. Can you go into a bit more detail about normal vs. experimental value labeling? I didn't even consider looking at experimental at this point since this is Day 1 on VCDS for me. If Ross-Tech does the normal labels, who's doing the experimental labels? When I was using the normal mode, the last option read "Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) / Magnetic Ride (MR)", hence the confusion.

And you mentioned you expect this to be wrong on the normal labels. Why is that?

I would be VERY surprised if the factory coded something wrong. let's say I just wouldn't believe it.

it is much more possible that VCDS labels are wrong, or better, non-mature, non-exact.

submit your scan and all admaps, it will help Uwe and friends to correct labels for a newer release.

Thanks! I figured a factory error was unlikely, but I didn't want to make assumptions about an application I was brand new to using either.

The full auto-scan is in my original post, and below is an admap of the A5 module I'm referring to. If you want admaps for everything, that might take a while to get because I don't have a way to keep the battery powered for these, and I don't want to end up with a dead battery. I'm also going out of town tomorrow for a few days. But hopefully this helps in the meantime!

the files are not for me, Ross Tech will take inspiration to make VCDS better.

I did all maps of my car several times, it takes less than ten minutes. if you switch all utilities off, you don't need a battery charger. if you did, you already have a battery problem.
I actually flashed the A5 camera to a newer software without a charger, it took almost 45 minutes. unwise, yes, but it's just an example.

of course, when you can and have time.

Why is that?

jphuhan: Hi - Your question regarding normal and "experimental" "value labeling is an excellent one!!!

I don't know the definitive answer, but I can share with you some very-amateur observations - but first I need to ask for Ross-Tech's indulgence, because I might be preaching heresy, or at the very least my comments might be at odds with Ross-Tech's views. So, I proceed carefully and without any intention what-so-ever to cast aspersion on what I consider to be an excellent product

Let's start with the term "experimental" - it's an interesting word to use when referring to the alternative bunch of labels that populate the nifty long coding application in VCDS. I say "interesting" because the term "experimental" congers-up the notion that these labels are tentative, probative, or they are in some way unproven. There is even a warning message that is displayed by VCDS to reinforce the notion that these "other" labels are of lesser standing than the "normal" long coding labels. I prefer to lose these judgemental descriptors when talking about this matter - let's just collectively call these the "yellow " labels.

So - I guess like many here, I have access to a number of diagnostic cables/dongles and each has it's advantages and disadvantages - but VCDS is definitely my favorite. For the long coding descriptor function (as distinct from the more basic Byte/Bit function for long coding), I've noticed a remarkable similarity between the "yellow" VCDS labels and the entries on my other manufacturer's devices. In fact, it's the so-called "normal" VCDS labels that are the oddities when comparing long coding results across diagnostic devices. This in no way is meant to diminish the quality of the normal labels - I simply make an observational statement of fact.

And herein lies my dilemma with the way that VCDS treats the "yellow" long coding labels (which naturally generates the view amongst VCDS users that yellow labels are indeed "experimental" and to proceed-with-caution): ALL my other cables use yellow-like labels as their definitive descriptor for the long coding software switches - there are no warnings in these devices about these similar (and in nearly all cases - the same) labels. It is only VCDS that makes a judgemental comparison between the "yellow" and its own normal labels. Once more, no criticism is intended - again, just an observational statement of fact.

Which brings me neatly to the pivotal question in this entire debate (in my mind at least) regarding the standing of the yellow labels; Why is it that ALL (including VCDS) cables are able to generate the same yellow-like labels for the descriptor function in long coding?

I don't know the definitive answer to this question, but using pure logic, my guess is that these descriptors come from the modules themselves - how else is it possible for different manufacturer's devices to report the same values?

If this is correct, then the characterization of yellow labels as being "experimental", or "risky" is interesting (and more than a tad confusing). To juxtapose this dichotomy- my belief is that all cable manufactures report (pretty-much) the same adaptation channel descriptors because these names also come from the modules themselves. But VCDS does not similarly warn users to proceed-with-care for these labels and there is no similar inference that these descriptors are "experimental".

So, again without criticism of Ross-Tech and sans any judgement about the quality, or usefulness of either the normal, or the yellow labels - my plea is to remove the warning labels from the yellow screens. Let the user decide which labels to use without fear-or-favor from Ross-Tech, please.

I will now step-down from my soap-box to spend quality time contemplating my indiscretion in the naughty corner!! ;)

Don

I might be preaching heresy
I'm looking for a stake and pile of wood as I write this. ;)

I think we can safely assume that if the "yellow" coding labels in VCDS are real similar to the only coding label in other tools, that they likely do have a common source. However, that source is not from querying modules themselves, but rather a common source of "documentation" for those modules.

The reason other tools don't warn that theirs are "unproven" is because that's all they have. They've never gone to the effort to cross-check that "documentation" with other sources, or to test it empirically, and we've done a combination of both for many (but by no means all) modules.

This does not mean our "regular" labels are perfect; I'll readily admit that they're not. It's just that we have considerably more confidence in them than the stuff that's more widely available, which we present in yellow.

^^ Thanks Uwe for the correction - but with respect, I'm not sure that the fact that the "yellow" labels come from an external reference source and not from the module itself changes the point that I make

Regardless of where the data resides, the information comes from a reference source that is commonly accepted by the diagnostic industry (except that its standing is questioned by Ross-Tech). Presumably the wide acceptance by industry of this information is because it comes with some authority from the manufacturer/supplier/of the module, or from the car manufacturer.

Notwithstanding the possibility of error in data from any reference source, why is it reasonable to accept the veracity of a pin-out descriptor on a module (say) from an industry reference source and it then is not acceptable for the data in the yellow labels? Has Ross-Tech's experience with the reference source for these labels been so parlous that there is a real fear about their accuracy? And if the answer is "yes", why include the yellow labels at all (and why isn't there wide-spread condemnation by users of other cables of the same information in other forums like this?)

I fully acknowledge that Ross-Tech might have "considerably more confidence" in the normal screens - but does this warrant the label "experimental" and the warning message on the Yellow screens?

Ultimately however, I accept that this is a "captain's call". So I will retire from this debate -not convinced, but rather respectful of the Benevolent Dictator 's authority!! ;)

Don

PS: you may now light the pyre - but be warned that the only pain that I can tolerate is someone else's

Don,

Let's just say we aren't as trusting of that particular source as some of the other outfits in this industry are. That source is not "official" and none of us are privy to much of anything that really is.

I figured a factory error was unlikely
My 2016 Superb with DCC also has a Steel suspension coded. A5 is a front assist camera. I think that Air suspension really matters because it can alter suspension height. Neither DCC nor Magnetic can. Fixed steel can't alter height either. So steel / magnetic / DCC behave identically as far as A5 is concerned...
