Audi Q7 2014 S-Line; how to disable all lights and minimize power consumption

Hi,
I am using this car for camping often. That means we often need to open / close doors and lid without starting the car. Unfortunately every time a door or lid is opened, the light comes on and stays that way for a long time. Also opening doors likely powers up bunch of other subsystems. On the last trip the car ended up with drained battery after 3 days (hence bunch of error codes in the scan data). We ended up charging it from another car for an hour and then jump starting.

Since then I have used the button above the mirror to turn off the dome lights. But it does not help with the red lights on the door and the lid lights. Then I have enabled "green" MMI menu and reduced "Standby delay (Min)", "Power down delay (Min)", "BEM shutdown delay (Min)" from 10,15,2 to 2,3,1. (this was after I run the vcds scan). But I still see that the lid light and the red door light stay ON for longer then 3 minutes, so I am not sure if “green menu” settings take effect.

When opening doors / lid with the engine off, I would like no lights or illumination to come up. Also I’d like to reduce the subsystems current usage to further slow down battery drain. Ideally there would be a toggle in MMI, (or ability to hook it up to one of existing hardware buttons) where I can put the car in the “low power consumption mode” and turn it off when I am back to the city. Is this possible?

I don't know the Q7 platform but what you're asking is very particular and I bet my ass it cannot be coded that way.

you could install a hard switch that cuts all the lights you want, but then you'd be left with plenty of errors, with some probably visible on the dash.

I believe the car already has power management features, and most (if not all) lights are LEDs, which draw very little current.

are you sure you just didn't have a weak/old battery?

Q7 had the doors open most of the last day with multiple people opening / closing them all the time. We had the other car was with us which was used in the same way and it did not have any problems with starting. I do not know if Q7 lights are LED, but I remember people posting that leaving Q7 dome lights overnight via open doors will drain the battery.

If I cannot code this to the switch, can I at least turn off the red lights and lid lights with vcds so I would configure that before camping trip and restore to original settings when I am back.

One of the first things I'd do; would be to activate Transport Mode. This should kill the lights operating on each door opening.

However, there's a double-edged sword with what you're trying to do. The car is at its most frugal on power, when BCM knows it's locked. It can't (and doesn't really) shut-down whilst a door is open. Here's a bit of current draw testing I did on my car a few years ago. You'll see when locked, current draw drops down to the mA level of the alarm LED flashing. I never did track down what that 8-10A draw was before it went to sleep; but my hunch is the BCM2 and sound equipment.

The advanced level would be to dig around in the Wiring Diagrams to see what you could either intercept or alter to allow the BCM to shut down.

The quickest and easiest thing to do will be Transport Mode, ([Applications] > [Activate Transport Mode]) so please try that first and report back.

Are you sure it cares whether it's locked or not? I park cars in my garage all the time w/o locking them and never have a problem with battery drain. I guess it's possible it goes to sleep faster if you lock it, but I think it will go to sleep properly even if it's not locked.

Agreed. Leaving doors open is bad.

I like the Transport Mode suggestion. I also suspect the OP's battery is in worse shape than he thinks it is.

Guys,
I have enabled transport mode and happy to report that the lid lights and “under the seat” lights are off. Also the car does not start the MMI when turned on. The interior handle red lights and red door lights are still on. But this is already a huge improvement: I can probably manage with having lid open and do not open doors. Thanks a lot!

As a side note, the key reason for this door / lid closing/opening was that we were off the paved roads in the “bear country” where all the food, cooler, trash, utensils, cooking stove, etc has to be packed back into the car any time we leave the camp or for the night and retrieved back on return.

I also think a part of drain is attributed to lid motor operations, as this one was used to open/close a lot. Previously, on a shorter but similar trip in July the lid stopped working just before we were departing and had to be opened / closed manually. During that July trip, when I started the car on, the MMI said that the car was trying to save energy and thus entered into power saving mode. Within an hour of driving MMI restored it’s function. During the most recent trip lid motor also stopped working at some point, but I foolishly assumed that I do not have to worry about it and the car will figure out how to save the energy. Is there a way to turn off lid motor pre-emptively with vcds?

Regarding the battery question: I purchased the car when it was one year old, so I think it is safe to assume that it has the original battery. With 5 years on it, it seems like a good time to replace it and a few days ago I purchased Interstate battery with the intent of replacing my battery. (the sales person had 3 models for Q7 with different CCAs and was asking me which one I need. I had no idea so picked the 900 CCA one and if my car would have a different CAA, I'd go back to Interstate and get the right one). But then I run vcds tests (link that I posted above) which shows the battery being healthy. Also the battery does not exhibit usual “worn battery” problems – no slow window rolling with engine off, starts fine below freezing (6 month ago), etc. I am contemplating on purchasing battery CCA meter to test it for sure, but have not done that yet.

CCA is not the determining factor in this type of scenario, Ah capacity is. The only way to determine that on a used battery is to charge it fully and then discharge it over a long period of time while measuring the actual amp-hours that you can get out of it.

Or vice-versa. In fact, it's a trade-off the in the design of almost any battery.

And of course a test for one characteristic tells us little or nothing about the another one. One can have an old battery that still tests OK for CCA but has lost much of its capacity.

IMHO "Battery Aging" cannot be relied upon as an accurate indication of battery condition (ability to start and hold charge), any dealership that used only this parameter is not a dealership that I would take my car to!

Actual age isn't a good guide either, battery condition is subject to how it's been used/abused, temperatures it's been subject to, etc.

I prefer to rely upon old fashioned methods - does the battery hold charge and/or does the battery have trouble starting the car on cold mornings as a guide when to change the battery.

Yup, and lead-acid batteries hate to be deep-cycled, especially those that are primarily designed as "starter" batteries. Worse is if you let them sit for any length of time in a deeply discharged state.

That said, a typical car battery "should" last 5-8 years, but there are always exceptions. I've seen batteries go bad in 2-3 years that have no apparent excuse for it (never abused), and others that have been abused last 7-8 years anyway.

I prefer to rely upon old fashioned methods - does the battery hold charge and/or does the battery have trouble starting the car on cold mornings as a guide when to change the battery.
Yeah, and in the OP's use case, does the battery still have the Ah capacity to do what he needs it to do when he's camping?

Thanks guys. I will keep my current battery for now. It does not show any problems during normal use. During camping use I do not think I am using the car in a way it was design for. So no matter how much stored capacity it would have I would eventually depleted it. Ideally the car could just hibernate by persisting all its settings into nvram and I could simply disconnect the battery and reconnect when needed. I will put the car into transport mode and will monitor battery use more carefully next time (or let the car run idle for an hour once a day).

The Interstate battery I got has a higher CCA and lower aH then the OEM one ([850,80] vs [520,110]), so I am returning it. When the time is to replace the battery, I will go with OEM, or “lifetime autonation” which is also sold by the dealer and has the same specs, but offers lifetime warranty.

Maybe you should also consider a solar battery charger? There's a zillion of them out there, this is just an example:

Note that the lighter plug may no work on your car; I'm guessing the power outlets are switched power? VW/Audi used to have some that had an OBD-II plug. Not sure how much juice they made though.

Hmm, solar is very interesting, I was not aware such thing existed but feels like it would work great for my case. I think the lighter plug should work on Q7 — when I lock the car I can see that the phone is still charging from that plug (as an experiment). So I gather solar panel should be able to trickle charge the battery.
