what I am chasing here is a gauge issue. seems my coolant and possible fuel gauge steppers are a bit wonky. both gauges appear to be reading "proud" of the centerline after running the output tests. both are about a needles width to the right of the center mark during the test.

i'm not afraid to blow the cluster open and replace the steppers....been there done that with volvo's

it would appear to me that this car DOES NOT have immobilizer capabilities. in ch 25 (iirc) it wouldn't communicate.

    million dollar question (2 actually)

    1) good place to get the steppers? I see them as low as 5.00 and as high as 100+. not being cheap, it never works for me....best place to get them.

    2) local junk yard has a same vintage TT. I can get the cluster out of that for a cheap price (and will, because murphys law has it I will snap a pointer)

if I were to plug in said mystery cluster, what are the ramifications of doing so? my concern is the mileage may jump, or I could simply let the smoke out. I know mileage (on volvo's) is stored in several other modules so plugging in a cluster can overwrite mileage. I don't want to run that risk, but would like to plug in the used cluster to see if it works (again, I 100% intend on using my original cluster and the used one would be for messing around with)

    please and thank you

Hello OP and welcome to the VCDS Forum!

Couldn't you have a data transfer done to preserve mileage or just fix and calibrate the gauge's in adaption?

A new cluster could just be installed and adapted to program miles using RTFB, no?

hi! thanks for the reply. I have used ErWin before, no problem there.

I guess I muddied up my question...

if I plug a used cluster in just to see what it does, will I make a mess in other systems? or, will it render my original cluster useless? not as brave as I was when I was 20

I could send my cluster out for sure....but honestly for stepper motors....it's really not that big of a deal for me to do it. solder in a new display? yea...someone else can do that for me (thankfully my display is fine....for now)

again, i'm a volvo tech of 20+ years now (I know, shoot me) and I know how angry stuff gets swapping out 'nodes' as volvo calls them....I am just not 100% sure on the architecture of VAG products...

This is the VCDS forum for OBD not regular repair area or tweaks area, right?
Repairs here or work procedure steps, should be queried in the RTFB, no?
What makes you think plugging in a cluster will pollute other modules?

Does this happen in Volvo and why It's a POS now made in China?

    hi

I was just asking for some guidance, real world experience. damned if you do, damned if you don't....you ask a question and get flamed....you do something without asking and get flamed, and cause a mess.

a simple "yea, you can plug in a used cluster to test it if you want....it won't do a,b,c" or "dude, DON'T DO IT because....." was all I was looking for. having spent most of my life working with VIDA and Ista, as mentioned in my first post....I know enough about VAG to be dangerous. not fully understanding a system is my issue. all info I have seems to tell me I can test a used cluster, but was just looking for confirmation that's all

I do not think anything bad will happen on a car that old. I believe the worst case is that the car won't start, but based on what I see in the Auto-Scan, it looks like this car is pre-immobilizer.

The engineering problems are likely insurmountable. It would be like proposing to land a rocket booster section on a barge floating in the middle of the ocean.

YES.......Won't a new or reman cluster permit miles to be set exactly in adaption and observed on cluster display & before saving in VCDS to be sure you are right?

    perfect guys, thank you.

it would appear that it isn't an immobilizer year, as I can't connect to anything immo related.

Hey are you a Vida eater and Ista grail sipper, you do realize I just ask a lot of questions to be helpful right and if it's a question it is is not a work instruction, you know for liability purposes & is why I don't give advice, but ask a ton of questions to make you realize your own outcome, via run on sentence?

You figured it out though, huh?
