Hi there - newbie here to the forums.

Picked up a hex-v2 VCDS scanner in an attempt to diagnose my son's 2009 A4 2.0T quattro.

We've had a recurring issue with a p2404 problem, and finally punted to the dealer to fix. The dealer was convinced it was the wiring for the leak detection pump (corroded) and the leak detection pump itself.
Dealer repaired the wiring and replaced the LDP. About 3 days later the p2404 came back, this time the dealer diagnosed and replaced the charcoal canister, said it was full of fuel.
About 3 days later, the p2404 came back. When I called to complain, the service manager assured me there were many components that could go wrong in the EVAP system on this car, and they'd be happy to continue to work on it, just more money and time! So here I am.

Unfortunately, after reading the code with my simple reader, I cleared it out and it hasn't come back yet (3 days ago). I got the VCDS in the mail the other day, so had a change to pull a complete auto scan from the car 2 days ago (attached).
This auto-scan doesn't have the issue showing up yet because the EVAP readiness flag hasn't been set in the ECU yet, it seems.

I've been searching the forums to get an idea of what's next to check - seems there is quite a lot of info on different models, but I suspect many of the diagnostic steps are similar.
I ordered a 3-day subscription to erwin, really only needed 1 day (30 minutes would have been fine probably). I also ordered an online manual on CD from Bentley publishing, but it only runs under WindowsXP (needed to fire up a virtual machine for that).

Found this info on the p2404 code:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18836/P2404/009220

Anything else I need to look at at this point, before I can run another full auto-scan for this problem? Worth testing the N80? It looks like a major PITA to replace this without taking off the intake manifold.

Thank you!

-Matt

2009 Audi A4 (B8) p2404 recurring problem

HTML Code:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/18836/P2404/009220
Anything else I need to look at at this point, before I can run another full auto-scan for this problem? Worth testing the N80? It looks like a major PITA to replace this without taking off the intake manifold.

Thank you!

-Matt

Are you aware that this car is under useful life warranty for free diagnosis and repair?

Did you JPPSG?

Did you pay for these repairs and can you post the invoice if you did or for the description of how the LDP was corroded as aforementioned?

Has the N80 been changed or verified for being stuck open?

Did dealer explain why charcoal canister would be saturated with fuel?

What's the condition of gas cap or o-ring seal?

You can force Readiness tests on this engine by going to Basic Settings and run the 'Automatic Test Sequence' from the drop-down.

If it were me I would run tests manually as Dr. Z aforementioned in VCDS & use a mighty vac tester to qualify each zone or device, no?

Hello and welcome to the VCDS forum.

Did you JPPSG?

Jack - thank you for your prompt reply!

I'm not aware of this - in fact, I'm not really sure what it means.
I did review the JPPSG, and in re-reviewing it now, realize I've left out quite a lot of detail. My apologies.
I appreciate your knowledge, experience, and willingness to help others. I'll try to be more complete.

The car is all stock, except for the headlights and an exhaust resonator delete pipe.

The dealer (Audi of South Burlington) did the repairs to the LDP and it's wiring, and the charcoal canister. I did pay for both repairs and I'll see if I can get them scanned in and posted.
Audi didn't specifically say why the charcoal canister was full of fuel, but said that topping off the fuel tank could cause this if done over the life of the car.

I should also mention that in addition to the p2404, we were having an issue with the car not being able to receive fuel. The fuel pump would repeatedly cut off as it if was full, even though we knew it wasn't (cut-off every gallon or so).
This issue appears to have been addressed, but the pump must be placed at the correct angle to pump fuel.

The N80 has not been changed to my knowledge, nor has it been tested yet that I'm aware of.

I am not aware of the condition of the gas cap seal, but can check that as well.

Zenerdiode - I was not aware that VCDS can do that, I'll give it a shot. Interesting that the dealer explained that with Vermont's new inspection laws, they are not able to make repairs and then run inspection before this readiness bit is reset. They explained the only way this (readiness bit) could be reset was to drive the car (several key cycles and 50-100 miles, in their words). Thank you!

I've got a mitivac - will look into this.
Still new to the VCDS - will research how to run the individual tests.

Thank you both for your replies!

Yes - I attempted to link that site in my original post, but believe I used the wrong tags.

Very helpful. seems like I'm down to the N80 valve and leak checking.

I was hoping to have VCDS do a specific test before diving into the leak checking, but I'll look up the N80 test procedure.

Thanks again.

Is there an acceptable method of payment that folks can use?
Could I were to ship you a yeast sample from VT?

Trying this out now - I don't see 'Basic Settings' in the VCDS home screen, or any child screen:

Under 'ODB-II' I see 'Mode 1-01 Readiness', which outputs this data:

Code:

OK - my apologies guys.

Under 'Select Control Module' -> '01-Engine' -> 'Basic Settings - 04' -> The 'VCDS Basic Settings' screen is shown.

There is an 'Automatic test sequence' option under the drop-down, but this stops with "Aborted Safety Reasons | ERROR".

Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.

Thanks again!

This is readiness for EVAP & LDP in red.
This is readiness for CAT in orange
A question......... does your car still report a CAT as not ready on VAG side & if you go and scan it or is it ready now?

Did you ask the dealer why they didn't do firmware updates or revisions of EVAP or LDP responsibilities or as per their own TSB's & for free under useful life warranty?

Are you in the spirit of useful life yet or should I pull up the conformity applications to help with a comprehensive parts identified and warranty items listed?

Did you run the tests at the right time & as per the RTFB?

Just went back and re-read much of that thread. Quite a lot in there. I clearly have some catch-up to do.

End----------(Elapsed Time: 01:22, VBatt start/end: 12.2V/12.2V)-----------

Engine readiness now showing Catalytic converter as passed.
I think it's just the EVAP stuff showing up (couple of speaker issues too).

I've seen and read through both ross-tech pages - tons of helpful info in there.
I also read through a bunch of the pages of the epa link that you sent - am I correct in understanding that many of the provisions of the emissions warranty should be in effect for 120k miles? I was under the (apparently false) impression that we were only covered by an 8yr/80k mile warranty. The way I'm reading that EPA certification would suggest otherwise. I'm starting to think I'm going to get some money back and the dealer should be on the hook to fix all of this, gratis.

Did I miss something?

Very much appreciated.

Forgot to ask about The Fine Book.

I ordered a Bentley Publishers Manual for the Audi A4 - is this the right fine book?
It seems much less useful than simply ordering 24-hour access to Erwin.
The Bentley Manual I got on CD only runs under Windows XP, which required me to spin up a virtual machine to try. The interface seems a bit clunky and not any better info than the erwin manuals.

What am I missing?

Thank you again, I do appreciate the help.

Looks like you're starting to ask yourself the right questions and getting spiritual, huh?

Did you ever read the automatic extensions of useful life warranty & that takes EVAP related fault's to 15/150 when certified as such too & under US CFR Title 40 not just CARB & would that than imply the vehicle is certified this way & in all 50 US States?

I just love the holidays and the smell of an instrument FOI that displays self evident truths, don't you?

I know I can be a total asshole but are you not glad I asked these incendiary questions to ask yourself?

I never did read that material. And should have! 15/150 is something else, I'm thinking I'm going to be getting some cabbage back, and the remaining issues be covered to fix this issue!
I might just print out all 65 pages of that epa document to bring in with me to Audi on Tuesday.

Thank you very much for your help!

Thank you very much for your help!

What did I do but merely ask the right questions?
Are you not glad you thought of it or about it?

They say "the mind is a terrible thing to waste", but so is the use of the ability to ask questions or use question marks, huh?

Let me post this new question via long run on sentence, okay?

If the car required firmware updates and you were to be made to pay for AECD's that are supposed to be allegedly under warranty as defined in that aforementioned document you surmised on your own & even by means of unwittingly maybe alleged FRAUD & those instruments filed with the US Government or carry over by means of CARB, wouldn't "any" subsequent failure or vicarious failure of any OBD2 component that could be damaged, & resulted in the release of uncontrolled or remediated GHG or MIL, than indeed would be covered according to the CAA, no?

Holy shit right?
I just love to ask questions don't you?

I am definitely glad this whole line dialog has occurred.

After reviewing most of the documents over the last 12 hours or so, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't have been covered. That said, I fully expect Audi to push back on my request for a full refund for previous repairs as well as taking this fix over the finish line, and slapping an inspection sticker on this car. I'll go to that discussion prepared, but expect that I'll be phoning up the VT DMV's warranty appeal hotline on Tuesday.

The thing is, I can't seem to pin down the motive.
Either they don't know (it really seems like they should know), they honestly don't think the parts are covered, or they're lying.
Fraud - could they be double-dipping? Charge me for the repair then submit the warranty claim? Or some misguided attempt to save Audi of North America some warranty $$?

Going through the whole thing, it sure seems like the car was certified (in 2008) under both Federal and CA emissions for several types of gasoline and usage conditions (many pages of test setups and results).
That said, it sure seems like the car should be covered under, at least, the useful life provision to 120k miles with no cap on time. I haven't conclusively found that the car should be covered under a PZEV standard (in VT these cars have the 15yr/150k mile warranty for any emissions related problem). This car appears to have been certified under ULEV originally. For some reason, VT only lists the A3 for 2009 (and other years) as the model that was certified PZEV.

I still have a couple of questions -
Where do I get a copy of The Fine Book? It can't be the Bentley Publishers manual on CD that I got off ebay.
What am I doing wrong when attempting to run the full auto scan under the VCDS Basic screen (previous discussed). I can't seem to run any test on the car under this screen. Car needs to be on? I must have missed a main VCDS usage guide.

In any case, thank you again for your guidance. I have learned quite a lot already.

Hey did you know I used to do external undercover warranty fraud investigation?

If a franchise could get paid by you and the OEM, do you think they might engage it?

What does this do?

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Official_Factory_Repair_Information

Car must be running when using VCDS for LDP and EVAP tests, no?

Don't CFR's say that if a car is certified as ULEV or ULEV2 it is automatic for increased useful life warranty especially if stated through carry over?

Have you ever seen car companies lie to the consumer and get caught or capitulate it?
What's this say?

I did not know that! Seems like that would be an interesting line of work!
I suspect that if this is the case, the dealership might choose to immediately cover the repairs and reimburse me in an attempt to stop any further digging.

The information link you sent - thank you.
I do have the materials listed, the erwin downloads and the Bentley manual on CD.

Car must be running - thank you! Will read through the VCDS documentation more as well.

I haven't been able to find the specific section of the 40CFR codes which state the warranty extension, but there's a lot there. Will continue to dig through this.

Car companies lying to consumers... oh man. It seems like a business decision these days. Risk < reward = lie. I'm thankful folks like you are willing to educate others about this.

Got a call in with the Audi service manager, waiting for a call back.
Going to call Audi of North America next.

Thank you!

You mean you didn't contact the EPA yet?
