I retrofitted an MFD instrument cluster in my 2004 Golf TDI (BEW). I wanted to see if it's possible to adjust what the fuel economy shows on my display, as it's off by about 1-2mpg. I know this is possible for the Mk5/Mk6 (and I've done it on my other TDIs), but I'm not sure if it's possible to do this on a Mk4. Google doesn't yield a lot of results on this, since I know the MFD wasn't an option here in the US for a Golf TDI.

Thanks.

I think might be. Please post an Auto-Scan so we can see exactly what cluster you've got.

Adaptation Channel 3. It likely has 100 in it. You should be able to change it to some value between 85 and 115.

Let's say you're getting an actual 40 but the cluster is indicating 42 mpg. That would be a 5% difference, so I'd try 105 as the New Value in that channel.

I'm not good with math, so I gotta think this through. So if the MFD reports say 40 and I'm getting 41-41.5, would I do 95 instead? I keep logs in Excel, and I'm finding that it's about 1-1.5mpg off. Oddly, when towing, fuel economy is more accurate, but still slightly off.

(MFD value/Real value)x100

(40/41)x100 = 97
(40/41.5)x100 = 96

I use an App called SpritMonitor... in the last 17.396 miles I did 58.8 MPG, MFD tells me another story...

Don't worry too much over fuel consumption report on MFD, worry about faultcodes in scan ;)

Yes, but that's in consumption (Liters / 100km). But if you're in the US and the MFD displays Miles / Gallon, then you have to flip the equation.

Bad news. Channel 3 is not available. Is that the only way it could be changed? It's a pull down option in adaptation, but it says it's not available when I select it, or choose that channel manually.

Regarding fault codes in the scan:

I cheated, and that was an old scan from 2018, but I haven't changed any hardware since then. I haven't used the car since May until recently, because I had a boost leak and an exhaust manifold leak (both since corrected). But I just thought to get the MFD issue fixed, as I had a pickup truck bed cover smack my 2010 JSW TDI, so this is now my primary car in the meantime. Which is fine; I love my Mk4 Golf!

Also, there were at least 2 codes concerning the databus - I'm not using a VW OEM radio (because they suck, and mine didn't work anyways). The only persistent code is the alternator DF code, but the car still works otherwise. I've had that since I bought the car.

If channel 3 is not available in your particular cluster then I'm not aware of any way to change this.

Hello, i have Similar car, a seat leon 2004 1.9tdi

There is a login code that regarding to description, enables adaptation.

When i enter the login code in instrument cluster, i get a message "login Lost due to dropped session"

Is there some other code that gives me access to edit the adaptations?

That Login is not applicable to the instrument cluster. A login should not be needed to adjust the channel that adjusts the fuel consumption calculation, assuming the cluster in question has such a channel.
