I've used a lot of forums in my time and something I've always found useful is if the section navigation links at the top of a thread (highlighted):

....are repeated at the bottom of the page, so when you get to the last post in a thread, you don't have to scroll right back to the top of the page to navigate back to the topic list.

Somewhere around here would be ideal:

Would that be particularly cumbersome to add?

(I know - I may be creating unnecessary work for you again Uwe )

actually Mike, I think that Santos would be the one to look into doing that once Uwe gives his blessing. For what it is worth, I agree.. I prefer that method too. In my case, I order the posts most recent to oldest in the thread. Often, I only have to scan down a couple to stay up to date with what is being discussed... Scrolling to the top is then pretty simple.

We're generally reluctant to do much customization to the forum software. In fact, I'd like to switch to different software at some point, since vBulletin 4 is no longer being updated.

Ok, understood.
Hopefully if you upgrade it'll be an option on the new version without needing to be hacked in :)
