After a recent water ingress problem the CEL is now illuminated and the car is in limp mode. I can clear the codes but within a few hundred yards of driving it's back into limp mode and the CEL is back on again.

I'm getting the following codes, the five engine ones being the the priority to solve so I can get mobile again (I've been off the road for three weeks now).

I've replaced the Central Electronic Supply Module which sorted out the lights and dead wipers

Any advice is very much appreciated ...

You need to get your hands on the J317 relay. It is what provides power for said items. Being your car is a bit "not Americian!" in more ways than one, I'm not 100% sure if the location. Off the top of my head I suspect it is on the left side, at base of windshield in a dry box.... it might be something like this crappy drawing done by a drunk turtle:

Please see your factory repair manual for a more accurate location.

Thanks for that Jef.

Going by your drunk turtle diagram :D it looks like it's relay 219 on my car. I have already replaced that one and am still getting issues. It was a secondhand relay though so there's always an outside chance that it's a dud one as well. I also replaced relay 395 as the socket it was plugged into was a little corroded ... obviously it's had a little flood in the plenum chamber some time in its past.

Is it worth buying a brand new relay 219? Or could it be a problem with the engine loom itself?

Well I removed all the relays and sprayed WD40 into all the connectors, then I sprayed all the connections I could reach under the dash where the water had leaked onto. I put everything back together again, cleared the fault codes and went for a drive. I did about 10 miles and no CEL came on and no limp mode either. Result! :)

When I got home I did another Auto-Scan (see below). Much better eh? Just some minor error codes to resolve now.

So it was a connection problem after all. I'll give everything another go over with WD40 tomorrow and put everything back together. Hopefully the CEL will be a thing of the past for my A4, I need my Audi back on the road so I can get some jobs done on my old Honda. :)

Did you put desiccant bags or rice in strategic locations temporarily to grab more of the residual moisture?

I have a small dehumidifier that I left in the car with the carpets lifted up. Dry as a bone in there now.

Well that didn't last long. I gave everything another going over with WD40 then put everything back together. Before refitting all the plastics at the base of the windscreen and attaching the wiper arms I took it for another trip around the block. I got a hundred yards then the car stalled and the CEL came on again.

Anyway, another Auto-Scan showed the same five error codes. I took the plastic ECU cover off whilst I had the engine running and the slightest touch to one of the parts of the loom leading to the ECU made it stall again. This takes me full circle back to when the problem began nearly a month ago. I noticed then that touching that same part of the loom caused the car to stall (see the video below). I think I may have caused damage to the loom when trying to get that connector off the ECU. I didn't know then that you had to grind off the two bolts and then slide the ECU out of its armoured box (what's all that about?)

https://youtu.be/Qn_5OLuDweI

So, I need to find another one of those smaller ECU plugs and a length of the loom and a good auto electrician to either find the specific wire or wires that are broken or cut off the existing connector and solder in the replacement.

Did you unwrap the tape on harness area to investigate the obvious and load light each circuit end to end isolated?

I ran out of light this evening so will unwrap the harness tomorrow sometime.

With the ignition on could I probe each connection on the plug with my test light and wiggle the wires to see if the light flickers of goes off and on?

Just to close this thread, I finally managed to resolve my problem. It was a dry solder in the ECU when the loom plugs in. All the solders there looked a little dry so I had them re-soldered and the car seems to be running fine now.
