Hi, new here so apologies if I’ve posted this incorrectly! I have a 2016 MK7 GTi and Recently I’ve noticed that when in auto mode the headlights (when on) will occasionally flick off and back on once super quickly after exiting a dark area, such as overhanging trees, I made the assumption that maybe it was sensing a further dark area at the point were the lights would shut off, therefore turning back on, to combat this I changed the tunnel on/off delay - channel 09 adaptations eng122930-rls_tunel_gateway_recognize ,(I now believe it may just be the on delay anyway) from 5seconds to 10seconds, this didn’t alter the abnormality so I wanted to put it back to 5seconds as when not playing up the lights stay on too long after a tunnel , however the adaptation will not take this time and displays a box stating ‘request out of range’ or such like and goes back to 10seconds, I’m entering the 31347 security code which takes so I don’t think it’s that, between the two adaptation change attempts I was prompted to update the HEX V2 cable so thought that might be something to do with it maybe? Anyway does anyone have any idea where I should start with this? I’m using the phone at the moment to post this so will post and auto scan ASAP, or an ad map later if required, having not done either of those things before though I may or may not need a little guidance, thanks.

^^^ hmm.......... here's a more "evocative" form of the code-string on the BCM from your auto-scan:

Code:
Byte	Hex	Binary
0	03	00000011
1	05	00000101
2	1A	00011010
3	46	01000110
4	C2	11000010
5	01	00000001
6	22	00100010
7	FB	11111011
8	0F	00001111
9	24	00100100
10	40	01000000
11	80	10000000
12	B1	10110001
13	1C	00011100
14	07	00000111
15	28	00101000
16	18	00011000
17	00	00000000
18	00	00000000
19	00	00000000
20	00	00000000
21	00	00000000
22	00	00000000
23	00	00000000
24	00	00000000
25	00	00000000
26	00	00000000
27	00	00000000
28	00	00000000
29	00	00000000
30 00000000

As you can see - the Bit-structure of Byte 6 and Byte 7 (which is where the Light sensor and LDS is defined) is singularly unremarkable. So, in the words of the leader-of-the-free-world (a walking cliche and my role model - not), "nothing to see here""!!

Just a hunch (actually, it's a complete guess), but jyoung8607 (a very astute forum colleague- particularly where American politics is concerned) mentioned on another post that sometimes VCDS requires modules on MQB platform vehicles to be reset when reverting back channel values.

I wonder if this idiosyncrasy is implicated in your dilemma? Worth considering IMO, given that it's an easy try - perhaps?

If not then perhaps posting a BCM admap (as you say) can shed further light onto the problem (pun intended)

Don

EDIT: Ooops - forgot to mention that the 'JYoung" method for resetting control modules is to remove and re-connect the battery lead - yes, it's a tad severe (why can't VCDS software mimic this process "virtually" - do UDS modules have an interrupt vector 0 facility?) but apparently it has worked in some instances.

EDIT 2 : Subsequent rush of blood to the brain-box - have you tried a softer form of module reset: the one in the MENU called "factory reset"?

Thanks DV52 for your reply, yes I don’t believe there is anything remarkable showing in the coding for the RLS but I felt it was a requirement to post the auto scan, incidentally just prior to trying again to change the setting back to 5 seconds the battery had been unhooked for just over 24 hours as I had removed the steering wheel for a re trim, this appears to have had no effect, on a side note though it seems to have smoothed out the DSG rather like performing basic settings! Is applying the factory reset via VCDS a simple process? Is it performed in individual modules or is it system wide? Other than making a copy of the coding in the RLS are there any other prerequisites before clicking factory reset? Could updating the HEX-V2 in between changes have altered anything? Thanks.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why I’d be getting the ‘request out of range’ message please?

That message indicates that the control module in the car is refusing the change. As to why a control module is refusing, one would have to know the module's internal logic, and that's something we're not privy to.

Sorry for the confusion -it must be my thick Aussie accent - or the fact that English is my 2nd language!! When I said "the one in the MENU called "factory reset"" - I meant the MENU in the MIB - not any reset in VCDS (whatever you do, DON'T use "reset all adaptation channels" in Basic Settings in VCDS- that's a definite no no)

You have already made "a copy of the coding in the RLS". On a mk7 Golf, the light sensor is what VCDS calls a SLAVE of the BCM (the sensor uses a LIN wire to talk to the BCM - but yes, that's probably too much information;)) If you look in your autoscan in the section for the hex09 module, you will find the following:

Code:
Rain Light Recognition Sensor:
   Subsystem 2 - Part No SW: 5Q0 955 547 A HW: 5Q0 955 547 A Labels: 5Q0-955-547.CLB
   Component: RLHS 037 0059
   Serial number: S5Y15M09D29H13M37S47
   Coding: 90A8DD

which is a convenient segue into my question - have you changed the coding on this module? I ask because Bits 3-5 of Byte 0 determine the "Light activation threshold". On my earlier model mk7 ( my unit is HW 5Q0 955 547 - not HW 5Q0 955 547 A as in your car), the factory setting for Byte 0 was hex00 - as you can see your value is hex90 (or binary 1001 0000), which suggests that light sensor on your car has +40% earlier threshold.

As for your question about any possible impact from updating to the current Hex series cables - I don't believe that this is the cause of your problem.

Finally, some later version BCMs have a channel called MAS08228-ENG133443-Light sensor-Tunnel_einschalt_verzoegerung. Mr Google-translate purports this to mean MAS08228-ENG133443-Light sensor-Tunnel switch-on delay and my A3 Audi (which shares the same MQB build platform as the mk7) has the setting 2 - this probably means 2 seconds, I guess. Might be prudent to check this value on your car

Thanks Don, Yes MAS08228-ENG133443-Light sensor-Tunnel switch-on delay in my car is set to 2, I did change this to 1 and the lights do switch on quicker, it wasn’t what I was looking for so see it back to 2, and yes the car is set to 40% earlier threshold when I look in the long coding helper, however as you know this can be set via the infotainment so I thought that is why it displayed 40% (matching the early infotainment setting), I now see that the value doesn’t change in VCDS when mid or late is selected on the headunit, I’ll check the auto scan I took when I bought the car and see if I changed it at some point (just checked and the coding hasn’t changed from 90A8DD)! However I now believe the ‘tunnel_gateway_recognize’ adaptation I originally asked about is actually the switch off delay, I’d still like to change it back to 5seconds so will have to keep trying, as for the factory reset, I won’t be doing that as I was already under the impression it was a no no,

Try changing the value in the Engineering Session. I had a very similar problem with a friends car a few weeks ago.

I must confrim this issue too! Suddenly missing all RLS channels as non available, on my Passat b8 BCM! Before updating on version 19.6.1., these channels were normaly usuable. Already sent on ross-tech suport as debug. Some bug here??

Ok, so I’ve been able to change it back to 5 seconds, I had to use the S12345 security access code, I’ve no idea why I didn’t try it previously!? Didn’t cross my mind as I’d used 31347 previously I guess, so there we go, it was simple in the end, thanks for your replies and thoughts guys .
