2009 Jetta S MT daily driver with 150,000 miles. ABS, ESP dash lights are lit, brake light flashes with warning tones after startup. Only complaint prior to these warning lights was the rear two tires lose air in about 24hrs, sometimes the left rear, sometime the right, sometimes both. This is my first time using VCDS and I was hoping that it was a wheel sensor or something easy or more obvious causing it. So far I've checked fuses, visual inspection of ABS module and pulled all four wheels and inspected.

I'll be happy when this is fixed so I can finally repair the random unlocked door(s). Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the VCDS forum OP.

Has your car had any recall campaigns done recently or work operations for this problem, because your car appears to have been altered with update programming of the ABS module?

Additional Safety Information
Besides the VIN search tool you just used, NHTSA offers additional safety information based on a vehicle's make, model, and model year and not tied to any particular VIN. A search by vehicle make, model, and model year gives you access to information about technical service bulletins, NHTSA investigations, and owner complaints, as well as safety recalls on aftermarket equipment that is often not linked to a particular VIN or even to your vehicle's manufacturer.
To search NHTSA's safety information based on your vehicle's make, model, and model year, please go to the Safety Issues section opens new window and follow the instructions there.

Recall information for this manufacturer is only available going back to August 19, 2004. If your vehicle was manufactured before this date, please contact the manufacturer for possible additional recall information.

Did you JPPSG?

Ever consider if OEM fails to rectify this free or to your expectations, that reporting it helps everyone, since a widespread pattern seems to exist?

Great Questions

Hello and welcome to the VCDS forum OP.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01130

Has your car had any recall campaigns done recently or work operations for this problem, because your car appears to have been altered with update programming of the ABS module?

Did you JPPSG?

I took the car in a couple of years ago to the dealership for a recall if I remember right. Last work that was done was back in March/April replaced the original battery (very dead) and both cooling fans to solve an overheat-A/C problem. (I had taken the car in for service at a VW Dealership in Bavaria they could not replicate the overheating problem from the one hot day in Bavaria but figured it was probably a bad thermostat, once we got thru the language barrier that is. It wasn't a bad thermostat. And they didn't have VWoA code readers or were familiar with 2.5L engine problems. I will say I was super impressed with the service.)

I saw the JPPSG and the other ABS threads before when I was shopping for VCDS. Found the wiki index and 01130 so I started there, but the Bentley manual glosses over the ABS system at least for me.

Thanks for the reminder, Ill start JPPSG.

I got a chance to dig back into the ABS but I could use some help deciphering what I'm reading. So I understand Fault code 01130, found the Wiki support and suggested fixes. I ran thru the ABS module test with the "press brake pedal' prompts as it goes thru the four wheels. That test was good, so I went back looking for wiring problems. The 01130 fault comes back after reset as soon as you drive away.

Question for the Group: What is this freeze frame info trying to tell me?

1 Fault Found:
01130 - ABS Operation
008 - Implausible Signal
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 01101000
Fault Priority: 1
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 93

So you took this car in for the ABS control module software update.......... I take it they did not replace the ABS module at that time correct?? If so you now have one of the two DTC that VW looks for to then replace the module after the software update or at a later time if it comes up with the correct freeze frame data in line 4 which you now have.

"NOTE
 Fault 01130 MUST have 125 shown in the 4th line
of the Expanded ambient conditions to qualify for
ABS module replacement and/or fault 16352
MUST have 96 shown in the 4th line of the
Expanded ambient conditions to qualify for ABS
module replacement."

Stop playing with it and go to dealer for free replacement.

That sounds correct, software update didn't replace the ABS. I'll check my paperwork.

Best explanation I've heard. It's above my paygrade.

Your dealer also has the "paperwork" you can give them a nice call.

"To help correct this defect, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will update the ABS control
module software with improved diagnostic capability to detect insufficient PCU ground
connection. ABS modules with insufficient ground connections will be replaced. The
software update will take less than an hour to complete; if the ABS module requires
replacement, this work can take up to a full day to complete. The recall repair will be
performed for you free of charge.
Should there ever be an issue with the ABS control module after the new software is
installed, an authorized Volkswagen dealer will cover replacement of the ABS control
module if certain, specific fault codes are present at the time of diagnosis.
Please be aware that other conditions (unrelated to the issue described in this letter) may
cause the ABS system warning light in your vehicle to illuminate. Customers should be
prepared to cover diagnosis and repair costs associated with these other, unrelated
conditions."

Almost all the info you need is here https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2016/RCRIT-16V913-6522.pdf

It's not like you are asking the OEM to do any more than what they promised & before trying to make you part with your money first ignoring this obligation, is that right OP?

Do you have an estimate invoice in writing showing the dealer tried to sell this to you and say it was not under warranty, if so shouldn't you get this & post for other Forum members?

So week ago Friday I took the car in to my local VW Dealer with the paperwork from VW about the recall and the invoice from when this dealer did the Software update in Feb 2017. The Service Manager was pretty set that the update was the fix and I'd be paying for a new ABS system, until I showed him in black and white where it says that if the warning re-appears even after the software update and certain fault codes are recorded VW will replace free of charge. So since i knew what the fault codes were (Thanks @MVB)I was more than happy to have them look into it and if it turned out by some fluke it wasn't covered I was ready to pay for that too.

I dropped the car off in the morning and got a phone call saying it was my ignition switch, they didn't have one and would have to order it and can't get it till Monday and the car was ready I asked if i could order one now, no but you can order one when you pick up your car. When I picked it up the person covering the service desk was confused, invoice/paperwork wasn't clear on what exactly was done so she called the Service Manager who told her the problem was my ignition switch and no charge which she was surprised at. Now It was "possible" that the ignition switch was causing the ABS fault, it was where I was going to start, but highly unlikely.

So today I replaced the Ignition switch with a VW one from FCP Euro. I cleared the DTC codes and took it for a test drive. The Intermittent faults from the Ignition switch are gone! Yay, small victories. But Guess which fault and warning lights came right back when I drove away.....ABS

That is exactly what I was going to suggest you do call CC and tell them safety issue and dealer is dragging their feet........I do not know why as they are not paying for it.

Would they not be getting paid for the two procedures..............the first being the software update and then the ABS module R&R if found defective.

If someone was up to nefarious behavior and wanted to get paid by the consumer & the OEM, wouldn't this fit such a pervasive pattern, no?
