Here it is my first Post that is bringing VCDS vs ODIS on a Fault Code 28269 - Gear Selector - in my new VW Golf Sportwagen 2018.

Here are some details:
- Purchased New in June 2018
- Never scanned my New VW until now....do not ask me why. Probably, I was scared to see something.... und I never escaped my fear!
- The VW Dealer software tool ODIS does not see the Fault Code 28269. Therefore they won't fix it.
- VW Dealer complaints: "The Fault Code is incomplete" + "Ask Ross-Tech why it is showing" .
- Instrument Malfunction w/Fault Code. VW tech said it was a miscommunication and is not that important...but still needs to be fix/cleared.

Hope you guys have experienced a similar issue and know how I can solve it with the VW.

VW w/ODIS result:

The fault code is Intermittent
Try and make an Auto-Scan without UDS Aggressive Mode.

See explanations here an here.

Thank you NEtech, I've Auto-scanned it without UDS Aggressive Mode and it is not showing, as you suggested. Also, I've found more info about it:

"The UDS Aggressive Mode box is checked by default. In this mode VCDS will try to retrieve all fault codes, even ones that may not be shown by the factory scan tool, depending on which mode the factory technician is using. You can uncheck this box to more closely correlate your results with what would be seen by the factory scan tool in "Self Diagnostics" mode compared to their more aggressive checking in "Guided Fault Finding" mode."

As, the VW Dealership did not want to recognize it, I will have to inform the Technician to perform then a more aggressive scan in "Guided Fault Finding" mode.

Here it is the scan for review:

you probably have a defective DSG selector, it happened a lot in the Golf. it will escalate and eventually show up on the cluster. at that point the dealer will replace it, if still under warranty.

Also very common in the DSG versions of the MQB Octavia III - same problem with some dealers claiming there is no fault code visible despite the message on the cluster saying not to leave the vehicle unless the handbrake is on.

In the morning received a response from the dealer mentioning that the ODIS scan had been done in "Guided Fault Finding" mode equivalent to UDS Aggressive Mode .
Checked the log that I've got and posted above and it is GFF scanned.

Now, the question shall be address by Ross-Tech, really. SO, why it is VDCS throwing a transmission Fault Code???

VCDS does not "throw" faults. VCDS queries your control modules. They report faults.

The fact that ODIS isn't showing that fault doesn't mean it isn't there; just that ODIS doesn't consider it reportable yet.

If you wish VCDS to to pull the wool over its eyes in a manner similar to ODIS, un-check "Use Aggressive Mode".

If I used a harsh word (throw) I apologize Benevolent Dictator  ... but, in this case it might just did reported a fault code that was not detected by ODIS with checked "Aggressive Mode".

I mention that if I uncheck "Use Aggressive Mode" it does have a blind eye and does not see it. Scans are available in earlier posts.

In conclusion, VW considers the following: "we performed two complete Gff's (Guided Fault Findings). Not interested in scanning the vehicle any further or trying to figure out why your scanner is pulling inaccurate data. If your vehicle recognizes any faults and sets a check engine light or other warning light we will then be able to scan and diagnose it.

Uwe, are you suggesting "that ODIS isn't showing that fault doesn't mean it isn't there; just that ODIS doesn't consider it reportable yet". Or VW does hides fault codes like these on purpose!?

I am looking forward to hear informed opinions that it can explains more in detail... as, I can report this issue for further investigations with NHTSA.

I am suggesting that whether control module reports a fault to the scan tool depends on exactly how the scan tool asks. I have not played much with ODIS myself, but have definitely seen it with the previous generation of dealer software, "VAS PC". If you just went into a control module directly and queried fault codes, it did the query in a manner equivalent to having "Aggressive Mode" off in VCDS, and no fault codes are shown, yet if you went in via Guided Fault Finding, it would do so in a manner equivalent to have "Aggressive Mode" on in VCDS and presto, those faults would show up. We've never found the reasoning behind this, so by default, VCDS uses the aggressive mode, but you can de-select it if you wish.

Many thanks Uwe for pointing to the right direction.

You are too politically correct, and I can see ....your reasons. But, I see an opportunity here to say it as it is and gain more trust from your present and future user base.

Whenever, I'll have updates I'll post it....

I'm rarely accused of that!

Let me re-phrase: By default, VCDS shows every fault code stored in a module, whether the module has decided it's significant yet or not. The dealers' tool doesn't do that, at least not under all circumstances.

I'll also point out that there have been plenty of real problems with those gear selectors. But given that you have a 6-year warranty, I wouldn't worry about it too much yet. If/when it shows up as a fault that the module considers significant (and I bet at some point it will), then let VW deal with it.

Then this is a very rare compliment to a such straight shooter! I really appreciate your input and I hope anyone that is looking for this kind of valuable information.

i just got started messing around with ODIS 4.4.10 to look into programmming some ODIS specific items like lane assist, acc, component protection, etc. my opinion thus far it is not all that great. at minimum i certainly much now appreciate the speed and simplicity of VCDS that much more and will continue to use it as my primary tool if not just for productivity. i can start, diagnose and fix problems in VCDS (and fill up a tank of gas), before ODIS gets past the startup screen... :)

ODIS is THE way to go if you have Geko access. for simple stuff, VCDS is way better. I did 90% of my retrofits with VCDS.
