I bough VCDS to try and solve my issue that even volkswagen cannot figure out. It's been to a vw shop three times without success in finding a fix.

Issue: code P0193 consistently pops up on my dash with engine light and blinking glow plug light. The car is in limp mode most of the time now. It started off on the hwy about 2 months ago went into limp mode, restarting the car would get rid of the issue, but slowly the issue got worse and worse. I've been through about 10 tanks of diesel since the issue has started. The VW shop replaced a torn seal on the pump and the fuel pressure valve with no improvement. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor with OEM replacement, after doing this the car drove great for one day then the issue came back again in full force.

All wiring has been checked in the fuel system to the ECU without any cause for concern, no crimped fuel lines either. There is NO metal shavings anywhere in the fuel system and it has a brand new fuel filter, this is first thing I tried.

Now i'm at the point that the only thing left to change out is the high pressure fuel pump.

Fuel pressure at idle - 350 bar.

Here's my log from running vcds.

If anyone has any insight on this i'd greatly appreciate input. I called IDparts about a new high pressure fuel pump and they said it should be covered under VW warranty, but I called vw and there is no warranty for this that I was told, my car did have extended warranty up to 197,000km but it's over that now, of course.

Well, the ECU thinks this is an electrical problem with the fuel pressure sensor, or the associated wiring, so...

Do you have wiring diagrams?

How many pins/wires to that sensor? Where do they go?

I bough VCDS to try and solve my issue that even volkswagen cannot figure out.

It's not unusual for Dealers to be as useful as a chocolate teapot!

Jack will be along soon, to ask if you have overlayed wires to rule them out as an issue. Static testing doesn't always help, as the engine is usually off and the wires aren't moving.

It's obviously somewhat intermittent: On the MK5 Golf TDI's there are a number of wires that break where they come off the chassis rail, across to the engine; front left corner in front of/under the battery. If this has happened, it probably only needs to have a very short period of one wire touching another where they're damaged, and the code would set and stay (along with limp mode) until the next engine start.

I took the car to a local Volkswagen shop not a dealer. They checked all wiring going to ecu from this sensor and ran engine and shook it all and could not replicate the issue. The car now refuses to start normally, in limp mode even before it starts. I’ve tried clearing the code and disconnecting the battery to reset but it still comes on instantly. This issue progressively got worse and worse. It started off doing it only maybe once a week then got worse and worse now to the point where it’s only in limp mode. After I changed the fuel pressure sensor the car ran perfect for one full day then the next day while just cruising on the Hwy it came back on and now is on constantly again. Same p0193 code.

I don’t have any wiring diagrams. There’s three wires going to the sensor along the rail. The shop I took it to check the entire length of wire going to the ecu but could not find any issues with the wiring I’ve briefly checked the wiring and cannot visually see any issues. It’s possible they missed it. I’ll look at wiring near the battery thanks for suggestion

Is it possible there is an issue with the hpfp? No metal shavings found anywhere but I’ve read there are cases where it can fail and not shed metal. I’ve ran fuel injector cleaner many times now since the issue started, changed the fuel filter again yesterday with no change.

I just tried moving around the two big bundle of wires that are behind the battery going towards the ecu under the plastic panel near the wiper blades and after resetting the engine codes I got it off of limp mode. But it’s showing many different codes now. Codes pending are p1007, p1006, p1005, p1004, and permanent code of p0193. It also showed p1091 for brief time under pending but now gone.

Post the scan with the codes showing.

If moving wires gives you codes... there's something going on! If the previous workshop tested the wiring, but didn't discover wiggling the wires creates many codes... do you really trust they tested the wiring properly? Is the loom even plugged into the ECU properly?

The normal break point is nearer to the radiator fans where they cross to the engine - on my cars, it's towards the front of the trans, but up higher - sort of near the starter motor, but I don't know if you car has the same trans/starter layout as mine do.

It shouldn't be related to the HPFP, because the initial code you posted about is an electrical fault code, not a result of a pressure problem. It appears to be complaining that instead of seeing a signal related to/varied by fuel pressure, it's seeing 12V on that feed (short to plus). My first suspects are a wiring fault (because it's internittant and gotten worse) or an ECU fault. Each possibility needs to be eliminated as the fault source somehow.

You'll still need a wiring diagram to do it. Either bypass the the existing wiring, or disconnect it entirely at the ECU end, and see if a different code comes up. The components need to be isolated or bypassed methodically to determine which one is the cause. It could be the wiring, ECU or sensor. The ECU might even have water damage.

The problem most likely resides on this Good Ship, Lop of Shit, Lollypop & at where the harness gets cut by the edge of the cylinder head by chafe resonance point & literally right next to oil filter top, RIGHT?

These new codes only came up in the pending area of my cheap obd reader I had plugged in at the time. I did move the wires around near the sensor, and all along where the fuel pressure sensor wires go, down the engine near the oil filter canister so it’s possible it was somewhere else that I moved the wires to cause these other codes to pop up. I’ve tried to replicate this again a few times now but cannot get the car to register different codes or get rid of the p0193. It is the one code that does not go away ever. It shouldn’t be the sensor as I replaced it with brand new oem one this week. The car was driving very poorly before I changed the sensor, it would be super jerky and stall randomly. After changing the sensor the car ran perfect for one day, then back into limp mode but it’s not driving horrible like it was before I changed the sensor. I was able to get it into normal driving for short period today by clearing the code several times and it drove great for about 30 min. The new sensor definitely improved how the car is running but not the p0193 issue.

I’ll look into the wiring near the transmission area thanks! Will clean the battery ground cable connections also but they look clean. So if I take multimeter to the fuel pressure sensor plug and see 12v this is not good? What should the voltage be 5v?

Don't you think you should unwrap engine harness and verify the entire thing to find break, than repair and re-tape and add spiral wrap in areas needed?

Isn't this repair covered by extended warranty and useful life warranties expressed as imported or already litigated by the US & Canadian Government?

VIN: 3VWPL8AJ4BM649339 Mileage: 218090km-135514miles

Did you ask for guidance from Canada EPA on this matter?

Did you try to prove the problem by vacating the DTC using a decade box with engine harness side unplugged at the ECU directly or changing condition of DTC, using RTFB and WD?

Stop crying and do some work.....

Have you attempted to clear codes in OBD2 0x33 Mode 04 versus in VAG mode 0x01-02 ?

If you engage, maybe I'd help verify some tests on the bench or in car after we see you have a valid RTFB & WD to follow along, ever consider that offer?

Woah Jack you are not coming across as helpful or sincere. Did you not realize that not everyone is a master VW tech and knows what you are talking about with all of your fancy abbreviations!? Yes I cleared codes many many many times. Sometimes it goes away but most times it’s stuck on p0193 code as permanent. Yes I have a valid Ross tech reader as I bought it because of this issue because I took it to a shop three times and paid them $1200 to fix and it came back worse then it started. I said all this in my first post.

If you have something helpful I can use please say it otherwise stop ranting on and say do something about it as that is exactly what I’m trying to. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor and visually inspected everything. I do not have a wiring schematic for this car so how am I supposed to know what the voltages at everything should be. There is no Hanes manual for this car so if you can tell me where I can find an in depth guide to this engine I’d appreciate it. I have to believe that the shop already took all the wiring apart and checked all the polarity is the wiring as described in their work order so why would I do this again?

First stop crying and focus!

You may think my tactics are of the asshole i am but do you see me taking your hard earned money?

I'm about the best friend you could have right now, let's prove it by reactionary self evident answers by facts to be verified by my & what you consider stupid questions okay?

Did you read the entire JPPSG and about useful life warranties?

https://forums.ross-tech.com/showth...essional-Problem-Solver-Guide-quot-JPPSG-quot

Now we are getting someplace, thanks for clarifying skill level and that you don't have the RTFB.

http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Official_Factory_Repair_Information

Please go here and I recommend printing your entire manual to PDF with cheapest subscription to save money.

A ULEV2 as tier 2 or above is certified with a 15 year or 150k warranty no?

Did you get denied that warranty on invoice or in writing?

Contact people here since your car is certified under a US COC, shouldn't you ask about if Canada subordinates CARB and US EPA & because generally you would think they would right?

I will take a read through these links thanks.

What does the emissions standards in Canada have to do with my cars engine problem?

I was told that this car had extended warranty 10 years, or 197,000km whichever comes first. I’m over the km’s So does that not mean I have no more warranty coverage from vw or am I missing something? Nothing in writing this was over the phone convo with vw service tech at a dealer.

Hey man I'm just trying to help you ask the right questions.........

Get the RTFB and post a WD and let's test this stuff, okay?

Seriously unwrapping the tape to look for an obvious chafe issue, is an easy thing to do, no?

Yesterday spent the day looking for any signs of worn wires, checking voltages at the plug, installing temporary ground to the fuel pressure sensor, no change in voltage or resistance readings. Tried wiggling and jiggling the lines to see any change of voltage or resistance without any change. I cleaned every ground I could find including the ones under bumper by removing it. Still same p0193 code. I’m taking it to the dealer today to deal with this as I don’t have the time to test and inspect more as I run own business and need this fixed now.

I will report back what Volkswagen finds is the issue for this persistent p0193 sensor issue.

Okay so no unravel of the tape and basic inspection plus a rewrap huh?

Yes this was also done. But I could not go any further then the oil filter canister as it goes behind/under engine. I’m not sure how you access that area without taking the engine out.

What is so hard about load lighting a circuit from ECU to component?
