2017 MK7R - Mirror Dip Issues

Hi.

I am trying to sort out an issue where mirror dip is no longer working.

Back in 2017 I modified my stock coding on module (52), Byte 4 to include bit 2 & 3. Since then mirror dip functioned as expected and always going back up with 90% accuracy.
It wasn't perfect, but it worked well.

This past week I decided to click and include bit 1 (mirror memory w/ memory seats) to the coding and see if I was lucky enough to have a perfect functioning mirror dip.
Not only was I not, but now mirror dip does not work at all. What could it be?

I have since tried everything I can imagine, but it will not dip no matter what.
I've since gone back to original stock programming (have new car backup scan) and proceeded to re-do the original 2017 programming for mirror dip of including bit 2 & 3 only. No luck.
This of course included enabling (09) in adaptation settings in the Infotainment, its mirror/wiper settings reset as well as assuring the side mirror knob is positioned on the "R" passenger side coupled with the known Park, Reverse, dip, Park, off procedure.

Is there anything I am missing?
I have compared my entire stock new car scan coding to my currently modified coding and found no other long coding differences. I do not have an Adaptation scan backup though so I can't help but wonder.
Is it possible that a long coding change can affect other modules, adaptation channels or even hidden programming within the same module?
I don't have any triggered or stored codes because of it. checked Bit 1 shows 99% X/Y and Active Voltage & Memory and will eventually create a mirror positioning implausible signal error while unchecked it shows 255% X/Y and Uninstalled Voltage & Memory, though the latter always worked without creating any errors.

Any help would be appreciated it. I've searched online everywhere for the last week and have not found one single person with the same issue. It's unlikely nobody has gone through this before.
I've changed long coding before, but never had an issue where I was not able to get it working again by going back to original code.

Mosquito: Hello again - good idea to post here as well because the forum expertise is penultimate (I'm tempted to say "superlative" but everything can be improved - I guess!!

).

It's an interesting and (as you say) a not-common problem. Just to comply with normal forum protocol - please post an unedited auto-scan so forum folks can see what other equipment is fitted to the car. Clearly though from your explanation, the passenger side module doesn't have a memory module.

Have you attempted the factory reset in the MENU as an easy-try?

It probably lost settings of position of mirror

... try the following:

- activate mirror dip in infortainment-system
- set side mirror knob on the "R" passenger side...
- Turn ignition on
- Put car in reverse
- Set mirror to desired position with mirror knob joystick
- Put car in neutral
- Turn ignition off

Test it by turning on ignition and putting car in reverse!

Hi Don.

I've edited the original post with the information that allows further review.
In regards to the reset.
If you mean Infotainment reset as in wiper/mirror reset. I've tried that.
If you mean Default reset of all car settings from car menu. I've tried that.
If you mean, hold the power button for the Infotainment to reboot (perhaps reset) I have tried that as well.
Only one I haven't tried is the Default reset of all settings from within the settings menu. I might give that a try. May even try to go back to stock coding first, do full reset, set mirror dip coding, do full reset a 2nd time and on to setting up mirror dip and see if it fixed anything.

I continue to think it is a programming issue though which is why I keep thinking that a replacement J387 module (Part No SW: 5Q0 959 592 E HW: 5Q0 959 592 B) may fix that, but isn't necessarily THE fix and who knows if it would actually fix it. I have my doubts if even a Part: 5Q4 959 592 would fix it.

I am considering going by the dealership and seeing if it is possible to factory re-flash - Module 52 but I will most likely get TD1.

*Update - Went by the dealership and they said it would be $140 just to diagnose. I have no codes for a non-factory enabled feature so that plus the fact that the door modules (original 5Q0 or mirror memory enabled 5Q4) costs less means I probably won't go THAT route to get it fixed.

Kids. Lesson learned. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I tried that but using park. I've also used it turn off the car which in the past always returned the mirror once power was off.
I will try that again using your exact method of using neutral instead.

Two things I'd add is that when I originally programmed mirror dip, it was quite easy to do and get working.
The other and more useful comment would be. Back when I clicked bit 1 and hit Do it!. Upon engaging reverse the mirror went down as expected and never went back up. with or without power, regardless of power off, regardless of going over 10 MPHs. I had to manually raise it so I could drive to work.

It didn't work with it clicked so I hoped going back to having it unclicked would make it work again. That didn't work.
The second scan posted is what my car currently sits at. There is no obvious reason as to why it isn't working, but it isn't.

What - $140 just to diagnose? I suspect that the number was padded somewhat because as I understand mirror-dip ain't a standard feature for mk7s in the land-of-the-free. So - giving the dealer the benefit of the doubt - perhaps the quote includes an "education allowance" for the master-tech to get him/her up to speed with the function.

I also tried a car settings reset from the main menu and nothing. I also tried Mari's suggestion and no change either.

In all honesty. My issue is not about the settings. The standard ones anyways. Those are correct.

My initial attempted change seems to have altered some other parameter. Something else is associated with the mirror dip function and I think I moved that setting away from it's "associated group" if you will when I clicked mirror memory but undoing it did not return it to its original place.

I've seen something like this happen before in computing software where uninstalls don't always revert things as prior to install form. In this case, if the same were to be true it would seem a module reflash might fix it but hard to know.

So I tried a complete back to stock coding and a reprogram of the mirror dip only coupled with a complete reset of the car Infotainment system. No dice, still not working.

The only thing I have not tried at this point is executing any of the adaptation options within module 52. There is a LOT of hex code there that is prefilled and I am not sure exactly what it is for and been hesitant to execute them afraid of breaking things even more.

If anyone has played with these I'd appreciate the input.

At this point I've tried all Long coding, output and basic setting options.

By putting the mirror knob on 'R', starting the car and putting it in reverse (not Park). Then after you've set the mirror position, put it in Drive. Mirror should go back to previous position.

This is a very common mistake/oversight with this feature. If the conditions are not correct, you will not save a second mirror position and thus even though functionality is enabled and working, it will appear not to be.

Mirror dip will not function when the mirror knob is not in the R position, when the car is not in Reverse gear, or when the engine is not running.

Thank you but that doesn't seem to be it. The mirror is on the R position and I've gone through the programming motion 50 times in the last week and it doesn't work.

I can put it in R, lower it to desired position and go forward. The mirror will not go up in Drive as it won't dip in reverse.

Getting it to work back in 2017 was cake. Worked the first time. My issue is not of not being able to set it up. I clicked bit 1 for mirror memory and in my case since I don't have it, seems it messed something up where now it won't work.

Mosquito: Not sure if it helps, but I have an MQB door control module on my test bench that I'm happy to use as a crash-test-dummy.

Alas it's a driver side module and it has a different part-number to the unit in your auto-scan -see below. But it does have the "LOT of hex code" in it's admap.

Happy to modify the hex string on my test-bench to any value you want - to see if the modification generates any DTC's (it already has a litany of DTCs because of the artificial environment) and if the mod can be reverted-back to original setting.

Only thing I have is the original new car scan post#1. Nothing else.

I asked VCDS Jef by PM last week if he had a full adaptation backup of what seems to be his car, specially in stock form since I found an autoscan he posted back in 2017 of a MY17 MK7R w/DSG & DAP just like mine.
He didn't have a chance to get back to me and I honestly don't know if he even has it or if that was his car in the first place.

I noticed on your module, you have memory mirror 5Q4 part but regardless I think I will take a look at your coding tomorrow and compare it with what settings I have, as well as the adaptation channels I have vs yours and vs my passenger side.
It might offer some clues.

Specific to the Adaptation channels vs basic settings. Both apparently allow command execution.
Basic settings offer both reset and adaptations of mainly windows and locking mechanism. I played around with them all.
The Adaptation menu having all the Hex code seems to suggest a sort of "factory adaptation" or sorts (I can't double check proper description right now) but I have been too scared to execute it because aside from mirror dip not working, the car is error free.

One thing that has caught my attention recently and I don't have any codes to this either, but recently my cold start idle went from a normal 15 seconds +/- warm up cycle to easily 30+ seconds and consistently. It is happening at any time of the day and I am in sunny Miami, FL where right now temps are easily between 26C-38C range when the sun is out so there is no reason as to why the car should double the warm up cycle it has shown (15 seconds or so) for the last 3 years. I haven't even gotten 30+ seconds in 8C temps and now I get them every morning.

As a last resort, do you think I can pull off replacing the Passenger module for a Part No SW: 5Q4 959 592 E HW: 5Q4 959 592 B ?
If so, would I be forced to change the drivers module too?

Blockmaps as the name suggests takes a snapshot of all of the measurement block values for the module (at least this is my amateur understanding from reading the RT stuff). Actually, I think the name is somewhat of a misnomer and it might be a relic from older modules because the newer protocols in MQB platform vehicles don't seem to use more traditional "measurement blocks" with which we are all familiar.

In any event, with UDS modules, secret VCDS wizardry happens and there's apparently a decoding relationship with the module's .ROD file (I think). The end result (again, this is my understanding) is that the process interrogates the module for the factors in the Advanced Measuring Values facility.

To make a Blockmap - from the Main VCDS screen, select Applications, then select Controller Channel Map

On the sub-screen below, enter the module hex address and set the Measuring Values and the .CSV radio buttons (you can populate the SA 20103 - if you want)

Please don't "look at [my] coding" - As I have noted in my post, the coding is an artifice and it's specifically set in an attempt to minimize DTCs in the test-bench environment.

I don't have access to ETKA so I'm not sure which modules are suitable for your car. However, I would caution against using a door module for a RH drive car on a LH drive car. I've read forum posts that tell how the up/down/left/right movement gets confused if this is done.

As far as your coding. I'm not looking to duplicate or even hitting Do It! but though they are different you can see the hex code change of each byte when you change an option so I am curious to see what yours would represent on mine.

On the mirror memory part.
Yeah, I think the safest bet for me would be to find the part number being used on a close USA MQB model that includes mirror memory and consider changing mine with that. I am not giving up on the coding just yet though.
Likewise, I have been trying to look into the folding mirror kit that seems to suggest it includes mirror memory, but some posts say it does others say you still have to change the door module for it. I am not particularly interested in the folding mirror kit, but whatever controller it includes is what I potentially may need.

Lastly. I came across a facebook post from the VW MK7 Golf - GTI - R - MQB group last night and there is a guy back in 2017 which had a working mirror dip that stopped working from one day to the next without reason and until his last post, he seemed unable to resolve it but I am reaching out to see if that was the case. It is the closest I've found to someone else having a similar issue to mine.

Try disconnecting the battery, if you haven't already. I've had a similar experience from being partway-thru retrofitting memory seats, and another person had a similar experience removing memory seats. Mk7 door controllers seem to be spectacularly persistent in remembering they were once set up for seat memory coordination. I had a memory seat controller in my car for like an hour, and the fault stuck around for months, until there was a battery disconnect.

It worked! and you were 100% right.
The setting stuck from the initial bit 1 click even though it would not show like so once I went back. Didn't matter if it was stock or something else.
I had a feeling there was something going on in the background, but couldn't put my finger on it. Didn't try disconnecting the battery and didn't think it would ultimately be that simple, but they say the simplest answer tends to be the right one and it was so.

After over a week of brain storming solutions and potential replacement parts I am glad it is solved, the efficient way.

Thank you very much, really. I think in this particular case, someone should make note of this for future use. I know I will.

I might as well share my process to tick all the boxes and get it working because I know someone will go through this as well and there is not a lot of information specifically on this, though I did see that some people could not get the mirror dip to function no matter what and I think there may be some 2nd hand cars around which may be carrying this with them as well. Anyhow.

My approach was as follows.
1. First reset the entire Infotainment and place side mirror knob in the middle.
2. Reverted coding back to stock (in my case, 52 long coding byte 4, bit 7 only. reboot ignition. Both 09 adaptations not active for MIB menu settings) reboot ignition 2nd time.
3. Reset entire Infotainment again
4. Wait 10 minutes for car to go into sleep mode
5. Disconnect the battery for 30+ minutes
6. Reconnect battery and go through the basic start up sequence of full left, full right steering wheel to clear most of the initial errors.
7. Long coding 52, byte 4 bit 2 & 3 were added. reboot ignition. Both 09 adaptations were set to active for the MIB menu settings yet again. reboot ignition 2nd time.
8. Reset entire Infotainment 3rd time.
9. Start car, assure reverse mirror is enabled in MIB, place in reverse and place mirror knob in R.
10. Boom, mirror went down.

From there on out I cleared all codes and setup the MIB system with the usual settings.
