Weird issue with O2 sensor and idle hunting on 2010 VW Polo 1.6 TDI CAYB

    Hello to the forum!

I'm a newbie and definitely not a mechanic but I'm trying to learn things day by day! I will try to describe the issue I'm facing as detailed as possible.

So I own a 2010 VW Polo 1.6 TDI CAYB for the last 5 months. It is low mileage (~75K miles) and in good shape overall (it only had an exhaust blown near the DPF which is well welded). I am the second owner since new and based on the paperwork the car had the emissions fix applied in 2017.

Accidently I noticed an idle hunting ONLY when car was hot (normal temperature), idle and stationary and with AC or rear window heater OFF. When I was giving load to the engine (e.g. turn AC ON) the hunting was disappearing. I had no warning lights, no power loss, nothing strange at all.

I visited my local VW main dealer for a full health check regarding the issue. Their diagnosis didn't come with any faults, no deviations, nothing at all.

I then consulted a reputable TDI specialist firm in UK and they told me that I should have an auto electrician look at this issue as first port of call. Indeed I visited an auto electrician in my region but the result was the same as VW main dealer: they couldn't find any issue even when they plugged the car and monitor it while the hunting was happening.

After that I had a talk with a friend of mine who is a tuner abroad and told me that in any case it should be could to reverse the emissions fix. Thus I was referred to a tuner in my region who did the rollback in the ECU software (from 9979 to 9970) and remove the flow transformer installed in front of the air mass sensor).

Miraculously the idle hunting disappeared! But after some days I noticed that it didn't; it was just happening in other timing:

When car is hot, on idle, stationary with engine on and without any load there is NO idle hunting. But when I turn off the engine and turn it on back again then after 10 seconds the idle hunting begins!

After that I asked a good friend who is mechanic (but not vag specialist!) for his opinion. So he plugged his ODB reader and we noticed that when the idle hunting was happening the O2 sensor was not working (reading was 0v). We monitored this and we saw that either when the car is cold or hot it takes a lot of time in order the O2 sensor starts working (giving readings >0v). For example I measured it from cold start and car moving and it takes almost 8-10 minutes in order the O2 to start working. It drops to 3-5 minutes from hot start and car moving. Also noticed that when engine is cold and car stationary it takes over 20 mins, and when engine is hot and car stationary over 10-12 mins.

I confirmed this with my VCDS as well as I run an auto scan which came with no fault codes at all. So I decided to check the O2 sensor. This specific car has only one pre cat O2 sensor (bank1). I checked the fuses, nothing wrong. I check the voltage in the O2 connector and I also check the voltage in the wiring which connects the O2 sensor with the ECU (in this case I only checked the connector which plugs into the O2 sensor. I found that all measurements were right according to specifications.

Then I replaced the O2 with a NGK/NTK one but the problem is still here.

I tried to unplug the O2 (and a couple of other sensors) while they were working to see if there is any difference but I came with nothing. I only noticed that when I disconnected O2 while it was working and connecting it back again it continued working. Only if I turn off the engine and turn it on back again then it needs a lot of time to start giving reading >0v

Here is a log of the VCDS auto-scan after I unplugged the sensors while working:

I also took some measurements of the injectors while idle hunting is happening

Here are two logs for your review:

    and

    https://www.mediafire.com/file/rjprs...00__2.pdf/file

What is your thoughts and advise on these? Is it normal for the O2 to show 0v readings? And to take so much time to start "working"?

Please accept my apologies for the long post and for any mistake in the above. Any advise/guidance for what to do next will be much appreciated.

    Regards

    Zach

Any thoughts guys? Any directions? Is this a normal behaviour for the O2 sensor?

Hello OP & welcome to the VCDS forum.

Please log MAF, IAT and ECT during this transition in temp and restarts.

What is the true status of OXS heating circuit and is it possible short to signal upon ground sporadically not just open or inadequate shield?

LOG OXS heater and watch with DVOM for amperage draw and isolate each track to OXS.

Verify control unit not with water ingress or corrosion?

Tuning doesn't fix FOD it only usually compounds it!

    What are fuses looking like?

Thank you Jack for your reply.

I will follow your guide hopefully I will come up with some logs to post during weekend.

Apart from that, fuses have been checked and all are in good shape.

Verification of ecu regarding water ingress and corrosion will be the last thing to do after checking everything else. From what I can see from the outer case of the ecu only the screws have a little corrosion sth that it is expected for a 10years old vehicle in UK and especially where the ECU is located in the engine bay.

I would like to ask if you agree that this behavior of O2 sensor is not normal? I am asking cause I have came up with different opinions on this?

And you tell that this has nothing to do with ecu software? Such flashing of stock software was not "successfull"?

Did you notice anything abnormal in the logs that I provided?

Apart from that, the idle hunting is happening due to the misfunction of the O2 or it is an issue that occurs from sth else?

Thanks again a lot; I look forward to your answers.

Could be wrong OXS sensor and if MAF IAT or ECT is wacko all will affect the response and what is seen.

OXS sensors easily can become contaminated with soot and block a valid reading.

Does the car puke soot or is it actually running lean?

I didn't look at your logs because & I don't go external outside this forum by links.

Understood. Sensor is the right one, NGK/NTK oem part and double checked that. I will of course monitor MAF IAT ECT etc.

No the car is running pretty fine, no power loss,no smoke, no excessive fuel consumption, just normal as expected. Only this idle hunting when hot and only when o2 gives 0v readings.

The thing that I didn't do and I just read it on the internet is to reset the ECU after replacing the o2 sensor. I don't really if this is sth or nor.

Yes I totally understand about the external links but I didn't see any way to upload the logs (pdf) in my post? Is this possible?

No, we don't allow attachments here, but you can paste log data in-line (it's just text) the same way you pasted your Auto-Scan.

Thanks Uwe, unfortunately the injector logs are tables (not simple text) and thus it seems that putting in code (like auto-scan) makes them really difficult to be read. Or I may do sth wrong while putting tables in code.

    Edit:

Here I managed to upload the log as image for your review, this is an injector test with VCDS when idle hunting is happening and o2 sensor gives 0v readings- it may help:

    @Jack@European_Parts

    Hello again.

So a couple of days ago I visited the tuner who did the software rollback to my Polo.

Along with his mechanic we did a full mechanical test on my car (including smoke test) as well as testing with VCDS which revealed a faulty EGR.

My tuner suggested that it is better (in terms of perfomance and monetary) to delete EGR rather than replacing it.

Following this I would like to ask your opinion on the following:

    - Is it safe to delete EGR without deleting DPF? Cause I have read around that once you delete EGR it is good to delete DPF as well (which I am not gonna do mainly due to MOT reasons)
    - In case that I replace EGR with a new one, it will need coding through VCDS, is that right? In such case can you point me to a guide of doing this coding myself?

Thank you again for your consideration; I look forward to your thoughts and advice.
