AJ Jetta battery replacement

The battery went kaput in the 12 JSW.

I purchased a new battery from my dealer. The parts guy claimed that there was currently a shortage of VW branded batteries, but that they carried Interstate batteries which are actually OEM, and the exact replacement.

The old battery is labeled: 5K0-915-105-D 12V 60Ah 280A

The new interstate battery is labeled: 54Ah

There is no BEM code on the battery..

Are these batteries exact replacements? Will I just need to change the battery serial number by one digit?

This car doesn't appear to have a BEM, meaning there's nothing to code.

Personally, I don't like putting smaller capacity batteries in a car. If it were mine, I'd get the highest capacity H6 size battery I could find, preferably an AGM. Here's a 70 Ah one:

I'm not aware of Interstate being an OE supplier. Varta was king of the OE batteries when I was at the dealer... eh... maybe the Chattynooooogaaaaa cars use Interstate?

As I understand it (possible errors here), you just can't ship batteries around willy-nilly like oil filters and tail lights. Batteries fall under some sort of hazardous materials, thus special permits and licenses required to transport them from point A to B in bulk. This cost a lot of money to set up, so VW/Audi just farmed it out to Interstate to do the distribution/shipping to the dealers.

A pallet of batteries, for example 000 915 105 DL, arrive from Germany to a warehouse operated by Interstate. These batteries only have a BEM code sticker on them. Some person has a roll of VW/Audi branded stickers, peels one off, slaps it onto a battery and now you one OE battery as you see them. From there, batteries are filtered down through Insterstate's distribution network and eventually to the dealer as needed.

The dealer I worked at, we sold both Interstate and OE batteries. Prices varied from time to time so whatever was the cheaper option to present to the customer is what we went with.

For future reference- What are you not seeing on the auto-scan that tells you that this car does not need coding?

Does the BEM show up as a unique item on the installation list/auto scan?

In some cars (mostly older Audis) it does, at address 61. In most newer cars, it shows up as a sub-system ("slave") of 19-CAN gateway. Your car has neither.

Most NAR Golf-class cars do not have one, unless the car has a Start/Stop system.
