It certainly couldn't hurt to swap the #2 coil pack with one from a different cylinder to see if the problem moves with it, but at 151,000 miles, I wonder: When was the last time this engine got new spark plugs? How badly carboned up are the intake valves?

It got spark plugs within the past 10 days. Had carbon walnut blasted out at around 90K miles... Intakes are probably pretty carboned up again and I'll start to set aside the $$$ to get that job done as it's not something I think I can accomplish in my garage with the limited tools I have on hand.

I'll try swapping the coil pack from #2 to #1 when I get home and see if the problem follows the coil pack or stays put.

Thanks Uwe!

I swapped the coil packs - 2 to 3 and 3 to 2, cleared the codes, cycled power to the car, started it and observed that the misfire fault followed the coil pack to cylinder 3.

Ordered coil packs. Should be here today and will hopefully fix the issue.

Excellent........ OP

Be sure to verify the grounds to the coil packs are good otherwise you will burn up another one.

Chinese Replacement Auto Parts!

-Uwe-

Some Chinese stuff is good just like some German stuff that is re-boxed on the German port & being purported in some shipping container on the dock and called "Made like technology in Germany that used to be produced" is absolute shit typically or of origin unknown or sometimes China's sloppiest work!

Beware many German & US companies are now owned OUTRIGHT by the Chinese.

Thanks Jack. I presume I can do that with an Volt meter on ohm setting and testing continuity from the housing to the engine block?

For reference these are the coil packs I purchased.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This will be the third set in the Tiguan with the second set being installed at around 80K miles.

Nope load light or be sure the tracks can carry current........beep beep tests are not worth a shit outside finding a track.

All true. But read the reviews on Amazon for that item.

True - reviews are crappy. I was in a hurry to get them and while I think I might have looked at the over all rating I didn't read the reviews. *chuckle* I still have three good old ones which I'll stick in a bag where the spare tire goes in case one of them goes poof in the next few weeks.

Prepare to have a nice little chuckle. I lost one of the new CP's this morning on the way into work. Car was up to temperature and I goosed it going up a hill towards the highway. Engine started running rough, ECP light came on, CEL came on and was flashing and car went into limp mode. Fortunately I was close to my house and had the VagCom on hand.

The CP that died was also in Cylinder 2. So now I have to think that even though the coil packs I bought were the cheap Chinese knock offs if I were to lose one its less likely I'd lose the SAME one that I lost previously and more likely I'd lose one in Cylinders 1, 3 or 4.

So what other things can I replace which might cause the coil pack in this cylinder to stop dying? The spark plug? The wiring connector? The wiring harness? Does this indicate a more serious problem with the engine? Should I take it into the local VW repair shop and just let them fix it at this point?

I can buy a dozen coil packs and keep swapping them out but that seems kind of inefficient...

Thanks :)

I think Jack said it all here... make sure the grounds are robust enough to carry the current. If not, the coil may burn up.

Thanks. I guess I need to find the other end of that harness and push some current through it. is it modular under the hood or does it combine back into some other connector somewhere else?

or

Couldn't you circumvent that travesty and run new additional ground overlays to each coil directly and tie it into a bus bar & back to ground on the battery using WD and connections that would qualify?

*chuckle* Thanks for that suggestion Jack but I'd rather keep the wiring as close to OEM as I can.

That's the point, the OEM is crap and insufficient & not what is wanted and if kept that way it will only be a problem and or expensive, there are ways to do stuff without a butcher job look but I understand your thought process for a cosmetic & respect it.

I like stuff to look nice too and function.

Be creative!
