That field will narrow substantially over the next 6-9 months. A year from now, there will be only one left.

^^^yep: my analogy (clearly lacking relevance given your question) was intended for the penultimate skirmish between democrat nominees- I'm fully aware that then comes the real battle of good against evil - and being a foreigner, I won't presume to align the party reps with the 2 x categories.

You guys have a fascinating system for the erection of President (and I use the word "erection" deliberately because it seems that once given the keys to the house-on-the-hill, it's extremely difficult to terminate the 4 year rental agreement of POTUS).


I don't claim to fully understand your regime, but he ("she" some time in the future - I'm sure) appears to be more like some kind-of short-term democratically elected "king" by another name more fitting to an independent country!!

I'm not suggesting that the election process for head-of-state in the Westminster system is any better - just different, I guess. Nevertheless - it's interesting to compare the two - and even more instructive to recognize the same "antics" in both!!

Hardly. If the POTUS had king-like powers, we'd have had fully socialized medicine under Obama, and there would be a big, beautiful wall at the southern border now under Trump.

Uwe- Arrhh.... very true, indeed - albeit I happen to believe in the duty of Governments to provide medical services for those of its citizens that cannot pay (some call it leftism, utopian socialism or welfarism - I call it just plain humanity).

But equally, if POTUS was of non-regal like status - he could be prosecuted in the normal legal system for breaching the law of the land (just like every other US citizen) and he could not pardon those who have been found guilty of such breaches (i.e. outside the legal appeal process).

I'm reminded of that most eloquent piece of prose in your Declaration of Independence - clearly Mr Jefferson did not intend POTUS to be captured by his words!! But these are not criticisms of your system of government - just observations!!

Although I do not agree with this (because government cannot provide anything to Paul without stealing it from Peter first), I'll point out that the current crop of Democratic candidates takes it several steps beyond providing medical services to citizens. During the second debate, all ten candidates indicated (by a show of hands) that their government plan would provide health care coverage to undocumented immigrants (i.e. non-citizens who have entered the country illegally). So basically, they are offering health care at the expense of US tax payers to any of the planet's 7.7 billion inhabitants who can manage to sneak into the US by some means. I'm sorry, but IMO that's being a bit too generous with the wealth of our nation.
