First time Post

Just purchased VCDS from Ross Tech (Newbie)
Audi A4 Cabriolet 3.0 AVK aftermarket radio 2014 aftermarket radio amp 2014 no steering wheel radio control Rebuilt instrument cluster for gauge and error problems at Modulemasters 10/2015
Symptoms: No Instrument Cluster illumination, no ac except with defrost button, no convertible roof operation, Turn signals operate on outside, No turn signal indicator in instrument cluster, No convertible light shows up in instrument cluster at any time
I assumed with 10 faults on the instrument cluster and other instrument and immoblilizer related faults that the instrument cluster was bad. I sent the instrument cluster back to modulemasters. They were very nice about relooking at the cluster, but found no issues. Suggested that i isolate the other modules to see if the functionality returned. I tore the car apart to get to other modules and unplugged individually but no return of functionality. Was happy no water in floor at CCM . I ordered a used instrument cluster which will be here early next week. I am a little uncertain about adaptation and would like any opinions as to whether the cluster is actuallly the problem. My daughter is hounding me for a new car for college. Car is in good shape otherwise. Hate to give up.

At face value, it would seem that the instrument cluster is roached. Have you tried doing the Output Test functions on the instrument cluster to verify that it works as expected?

Lets roll with a failed instrument cluster for now.... the big issue you will have is getting PINs for the immobilizer system.


As noted in the video, VCDS does not get the PIN information. Getting the PINs can be tricky.... there are tools out there that do this, but the ones that work are expensive. The ones that are cheap lead to this question:

def = defective.... we've seen a lot of cheap PIN tools brick instrument clusters.

Having said all this... if the cluster is the issue, and you get a proper replacement, even without matching up the immobilizer you should be able to get the top to work.

I was hoping to change the cluster to eliminate that before tracing a lot of other areas but it sounds like getting the pins for the original and donor cluster may be my issue. Any good cheap ideas would be appreciated. Also not real great with wiring diagrams

The cheapest is DVOM testing pin by pin just time.........no magic answers, only above majestic security clearance........ :rolleyes:

Just an update. I received my replacement instrument cluster and switched out. It appears that all of the functionality has been corrected I have a blinking convertible light but that will probably be resolved with a top reset since I manually opened. I had no light at all with old cluster. Now the proverbial question of how to get programmed to the car. Spoke to a VW tech who said an Audi dealer could program for about an hour labor as he has access to audi database. Is that my best option? Scared of dealers. Any suggestions appreciated. I dont even care if the mileage is changed since mine has 72k and that one is 73k. It may have come from a 1.8 and mine is 3.0 but my daughter knows nothing about tachometers

The dealer may be in for a bit of a surprise. ODIS is like a Dyson vacuum cleaner. A lot of dealers won't get involved with used modules because they have been burned by ODIS not working as it should.

Make some phone calls to automotive lock smiths and see what they would charge to pull PINs out of both instrument clusters. Because once you have those PINs, you can match things up yourself.

Thanks for all your help, guys. Audi dealer would not touch anything pre 2008. I found an automotive locksmith locally who was willing to read the pins. He came on Saturday. He had several different computer tools. He was able to read the pin on the ecu but was not able to access either of the clusters. I would think that the old cluster has the same pin as the ecu but that does not solve my adaptation issue. Thanks, Jack for the offer of reading both cluster pins. My concern is that even with both pins that I will not be able to access the clusters to change over. It seems that all my functionality came back with the replacement cluster so I am not sure why the guy could not access. The locksmith seemed to think there was still some communication issue. Any thoughts? At this point, I dont want to throw good money after bad.

I can't see it from here........... gypsy locksmiths usually dont have lawful or proper tools and could damage a cluster too!

Hi Jack I would like to take you up on your offer to pull the pin out of my used cluster. The gypsy locksmith pulled the pin from my ecu so that should be the same for my current cluster. Is there a reason that you would need the old cluster? Sorry I have not responded sooner. Have been under the weather. I can ship the cluster to you but need to know the hoops that you need me to jump through to prove ownership. The car is in my wife's name. I bought the used cluster from lkq on Ebay. Please give me an idea for your donation also. Don't want to insult you.

If the pin was pulled from the ECM, then you would have PIN for the original cluster since they will be matching PIN values. Have you tested said PIN yet? If you verify it works, then you would only need to get the PIN from the used cluster. Jack loves paperwork, I suspect he is just being very sure he can document he did everything within his powers to verify he isn't involved stolen parts/vehicles.... once PINs are provided, it is super trivial to just drive a car off a lot.

I also attempted to login to the Instrument cluster with the pin code from the ecu. I selected the 17 instrument and then hit login

I put in the pin
I did not get an error The screen just looked the same but had a changing latency spinner so was not sure of success since I am a newbie


The replacement cluster says SAFE when the ignition switch is turned on but displays the mileage on that cluster when the door is just opened before turning on ignition.


Thoughts?

In custody of equipment and cross checking data, sub system redundancy check!

3 keys.......one with note that went under water for remote.

All 3 keys transponder indeed function.

ECU present and communicates with continuity of identity.
Clusters present and communicate with continuity of identities on record aforementioned of thread.

Wait times are compounded and equipment is in lock up for clock times to commence in donor cluster & with count down from improper tampering!

Units show physical & electronic tampering.

OP: A "rouge" key is apparent, do you have this 4th rouge key?

Thank you for the homemade roasted coffee, I will grind this and run in perk pot!

After wait times, observations determine a data transfer is indeed possible & after a repair.

This preserves all keys including the rouge key if still functional or in possession.
