Hey guys, first post. Been having some issues I've been trying to track down in between my busy schedule. Little background, purchased my VW with 67k miles and it now has 183k miles. I drive a lot, mostly highways and commutes. Car has been flawless, up until a couple weeks ago.

My car has been having a hard time starting and staying on. It progressively got worse until I was able to leave it at my mechanics shop. Received some fueling codes relating to the fuel pressure regulator valve (N276). Here is the auto-scan of the engine module prior to some repairs:

The radiator fans are a different story. I'll have to get to those another day.

Anyway, had the mechanic next to my shop replace the thrust sensor, since the dealership service writer (a friend of my brothers and I) suggested that sometimes it's this sensor that goes bad and not the fuel pump. After this didn't cure the issue, I ordered a new high pressure fuel pump. After this was replaced, we got a little better.

When receiving my old fuel pump, I was informed that they replaced the spark plugs. I didn't know what type they were so I went home and replaced all the spark plugs and coil packs with new ones I purchased previously. My old spark plugs were very very black probably due to the car running rich.

Prior to getting the car home, it would start up very rough like, but I was able to give it some gas and get it going. After driving it for one minute, it would even out and the car would run just fine. Even coming to a stop, it would idle as it normally would. When getting it home, I went ahead and pulled all the plugs and coils, replacing them with new NGK laser iridium plugs and Denso coils from FCPEuro. When starting the car up to move from garage to driveway, it fired up perfectly. I think this was due to it being warm.

This morning comes around and I start the car to get to work. It starts up rough like again and I slowly get it out of my driveway and it solves itself out again and drives normally. I get myself to work just fine where I scan the car again. Here is the engine module scanned again:

I did some scanning during lunch to monitor a few blocks. Not exactly sure what to look for but I noticed that I was able to get misfires on 2, 4 and 6 while in park and upwards of 4-5k RPM's.

Possible ideas that my buddies and I have thought of could be:

Carbon cleaning needed
Injectors need to be cleaned
Kinked fuel pressure line that flows fine when warm/pressurized

With the information above, what do you guys believe I should be doing? If you guys have any need for certain engine measurement blocks to be monitored/posted, please let me know what to do. Thank you all for getting through my first post!

FYI on the fans - they can sometimes be opened, clean up the brushes (they stick in their holders) and reassembled to work a while longer. Sometimes the brushes are just worn out though! I've done it on my wifes Touran.


Have you checked the low pressure fuel side? If the HPFP doesn't get enough flow to it, it will struggle to get to the required pressure. I'm not familiar with your actual engine, but the 4 cylinder NA FSI engines run full pressure on the low side when starting cold (6.6bar, regulator built into filter) and then vary the low pressure pump speed to match the "requirements" of the engine.


Someone a lot more clever than I will surely be along soon, but there should be a measuring block for the low pressure pump duty cycle, somewhere.

That's what I've been reading regarding the fans as well. I'll have to get to them sometime soon.

I have not checked the low pressure side. I left work today and though it idled okay during lunch when I was doing my scanning, I got a way worse drive. I'll have to drive it home tonight but I'm leaning towards taking it to a mechanic nearby who specializes in VW vehicles. Here is a full auto scan when I finished driving just recently.

Newark, still see fuel pressure low. New HPP, but is system corrupted or is it starving.

Did your HPP, have any trash in the screen ? Did it start to fail and pumped it through the system.

At this time also MAF, CODED but still have low fuel. Don't know about this car but is there a filter prior to the HPP?

Did you inspect coil packs and plugs for water vapor corrosion ingress and ground enhancements performed?

Have you check lift pump output, and regulation/combined filter & HPP, cam lifter/follower and possible camshaft run out & resulting in low FP PSI or volume?

Additionally can't tap tests for brushes on fans be done, replaced or shimmed or even soldered in universals easily for the poor, as can't a shim be added to lifter of HPP to get more time if run down & to remove resonance?

Hey guys,

I had a mechanic replace the HPFP and thrust/fuel sensor. They didn't report anything looking funny, but then again, they don't specialize in VW's so possibly, they didn't look for such issues?

Checked the coils and plugs when replacing them. The previous plugs had a lot of black on them since the car was running very rich. The coils, didn't look bad at all. I've replaced a bad coil or two previously on the car and those looked way worse than what I pulled out.

It's currently at a European shop that specializes in VW's and I'm waiting for a diagnostics after reporting to the service writer what I've already completed. The more I think about it, the more I feel as if it's something to do with the lower fuel rail connecting to cylinders 2, 4 and 6 since those are constantly failing. Due to my own fault, I do run this car too close to empty so I wouldn't doubt that the system's sucked up some gunk by now.

I'll report back with what the shops found out.

Got the call just a bit ago.

Seems that the ups and downs while driving seem to correlate with inconsistent MAF readings being read.

They're going to run tests on the low pressure and high pressure pumps to rule those out and have a suggestion as to what to fix after that.

Got another update today. They seem to be working/checking things out a little slower than I anticipated.

Was told that both fuel pumps seem to be operating correctly, though the high pressure pump doesn't seem to be responding the ECU. Was told the ECU is giving off the signal but the HPFP is delayed in response. Something also about the vacuum not being at the level it should be either.

He mentioned that they think that it might be a mechanical failure and that it's possible that it skipped timing though he's skeptical on that part as well as the car runs okay when it's getting the fuel that it needs. When I called in, his mechanic was still digging through some areas so I was informed I'd be getting a call by end of day, which already passed or tomorrow.

He had asked if the Cam Follower/Roller was inspected prior to re-assembly of the new HPFP which it was not, though if the roller was bad, I'd imagine it wouldn't run correctly either.

What do you guys think? This has been an expensive ordeal so far and I hope something as simple as the MAF is the TRUE issue.

Quite possibly? I'm not sure how it could have skipped timing/had any cam issues without any cam codes/running okay. My buddy and I have taken our VW's to this shop previously and they have been very good with us.

If they decide that they've to dig into the motor to check timing, I'm thinking that might be a bit excessive and not necessary? Possibly start with replacing the MAF sensor and go from there?

Got another call back from the mechanic. They have stated that they still haven't 100% narrowed down what the possible issue is and that they'd like to check timing. Due to it being such a labor intensive task ($2k+ just to check), they suggested that they could check the cam roller which would put me at about $600+ dollars, just for diagnostics. He was able to provide me with the mechanic notes:

Technician test results and recommendations: Found multiple faults stored in the engine module for the fuel system along with mass air and misfire faults. When clearing, I found that the high pressure low fault returns right away. While observing live data, found that the mass air readings are jumping erratically. While driving I could feel a bucking sensation that was going in time with the mass air data. This was also causing the fuel trim values to shift according to the mass air values. Appears that along with the high pressure fuel system issue that an issue with the mass air flow sensor is occurring. Could not find the proper documented channels in the live data to display the high pressure, fuel pressure values. There are a number of sources that indicate the measuring block but these were not the values displayed on the VCDS. Possible ODIS will be able to provide this info. Further testing of the high and low pressure sensors will be needed along with testing of the mass air at this time. It is possible there is a timing chain issue that is causing both of these faults/symptoms.



Technician results with possible cause of symptom: Accessed the high pressure sensor and the high pressure pump regulating valve and connected both to the scope. Noticed that the wiring for the HPFP solenoid has had holes poked in the shielding which may cause a corrosion issue (just noting). Connected a fuel pressure gauge at the low side pressure sensor to verify low side supply and pressure. Connected ODIS to verify the pressures from the ECM as compared to the mechanical gauge. Found the low pressure readings at the gauge and the scan tool are in synch. Found the high pressure sensor voltage did increase as the rail pressure increased (appears the sensor is working) although the rail pressure increase was marginal and significantly below spec. Was able to verify with the scope that the high pressure pump is receiving a signal from the ECM to increase the pressure but the pressure is not increasing. Measured the engine vacuum and found only 10" at idle. Appears at this time the issue is mechanical. Inspection of the pump roller and base engine timing should be done at this time.

Would me fixing the MAF and having it run 'correctly' reset this ECU error and make it all good again? The service writer and I are at a loss without going any further into the motor. I fear that I may have to just give up on this vehicle if we can't figure it out. Anybody with an idea with the above notes?

Anybody have any suggestions?

Been talking to multiple people and a lot of ideas are coming up. The car being out of time doesn't make sense to all of us.

Is there a VCDS log for monitoring the injectors duty cycle? We believe it could be possibly this?

How often are Cam Rollers the issue? I feel like as a roller, it wouldn't wear out at all, but I'm not 100% on that.

Would a smoke test on the vacuum system be worth to test? To possibly identify leaks in the vacuum system?

Not sure what to test next!

Correcting the N276 open circuit and checking harness with load light for every track to ECU would be the first thing I did along with cam follower and cam.

Called and authorized them checking the Cam Follower/Roller. Asked if they checked wiring and they said that the signal is reaching the HPFP and that it just isn't responding right away.

Will report back after they check cam follower.

Got a call from the VW techs at the mechanic shop after removing my HPFP to check the cam/timing. The cam roller was missing. The HPFP was not working off the cam at all.

Went back to the mechanic that initially replaced the HPFP and asked them if they took the cam roller out and spoke with the actual mechanic who swore he never touched it/removed it. Sketchy, but I have no basis to blame them as I've no proof, but I'm happy the car is now running just fine with a new cam roller installed. Thanks all. Glad I don't have to get rid of this great motor.
