MK7 Halo headlight range to cluster illum dimmer

I am finalizing the retrofit of LED headlights to my Golf 7, I had halogens as stock. Halogens had a manual height adjustment next to the light switch, please see picture:

since that dial is not necessary anymore, I replaced it with the cluster illumination dimmer, please see picture:

this is the wiring diagram, where I understand they are wired the very same, so I believe they are exchangeable:

actually the illumination dimmer does not work, so I wonder if any coding/adaptation need to be adjusted. I looked into modules 09 and 17 but could not find anything obvious.

does anybody have a solution? thanks

I don't have an answer, but I'm looking for similar information. I want to be able to dim the dashboard/instrument panel lights to 'off' or at least much darker than the factory setting. If you find an answer, please share. See the clues left by others in my earlier thread by searching for my user name 'jgordon'. It's the only thread I've posted.

I've developed a database (read, MS excel spreadsheet) of the "standard" function for BCM code switches for MQB platform vehicles over a number of years.

The data in my spreadsheet has come from many places (i.e. the net, options on various diagnostic cables and rare discussions with dealer master-technicians). At first in good citizen fashion, I started the spreadsheet by also recording the source of the information, but in my characteristic slack style that part of my record keeping disappeared - so attribution of the data is not possible (alas).

Anyhow - this is an extract from my spreadsheet that might be of interest:

Byte 7, Bit 0-1 (Lighting adjustment-Input media),
Options: not installed=hex0, Potentiometer=hex1, Button=hex2, HMI=hex3

The code string on your auto-scan reports Bit 7, Bit 0-1 as hex3 (i.e. control via the MENU). Try changing Bit 1 to 0

thank you Don, I made some progress. I changed bits 0-1 to hex 01 (potentiometer) and here's the error I get:

this makes me believe that the BCM does not sense the pot.

so I opened both pots, the old headlight level range and the new illum dimmer. they basically are the same, they have a 7pin connector but only 5 pins are populated.

pins 2 and 6 are for the illumination.
pins 3, 4 and 5 are the actual pot (the resistor is across 3 and 4 and 5 is the wiper).

when the car was stock, pin 5 was directly connected to the two motors that regulated height inside the halogen headlights. that wire is now disconnected on the headlights' side, because the new LED headlights height is regulated by control module 55.

so that pin 5 should now go to BCM, but I am not sure where. the wiring diagram says it COULD go to B33 "according to equipment / from May 2017", so I am perplexed.

I can't find much about the potentiometer for the illumination on my WD s. But I did manage to find this on the BCM pin out:

T73c /19 - Designation= Switch and instrument illumination regulator -E20-

Not sure if it helps, or hinders - hope the former, but I apologize if the latter applies

what revision of WD do you have? mine is JUNE 2017, from erWin, and on the BCM pinout B33 and C19 are both shown as unused (blank).

^^ My WD s are earlier (MY13 & MY14) - but the entire matter is academic if your BCM physically doesn't have either of the 2 x pin options in question. Perhaps start by confirming this (i.e. eye-ball the pins on the B & C sockets)? If the pins are not present, then you might need to forget this part of the exercise - it seems like the tail-wagging-the-dog if you are considering changing the BCM (IMO)

BCM was replaced long ago with a CL, the correct HIGH version for the car. I believe all pins are there.

UPDATE:

BCM does not have pin B33 so that's a dead end;

a friend made me notice our common BCM pinout calls for the pot to be connected on pin A55. I tried this morning and the error stays so that's another dead end.

we also found out this dimmer is installed only on NAR (USA market) cars so the wiring diagrams could be different. unfortunately I cannot access NAR schematics.

I will try pin C19 and see what happens.

it is really weird, I did plenty of retrofits on the car and everything worked out almost at first attempt; so far this stupid dimmer seems one of the most challenging things.

C19 is the correct pin, now I am getting TWO errors instead of one (see picture, forget databus error) and I shot a video while operating the dimmer.

now I suspect the dimmer input should not be 5V instead of 12V.

so I have acquired a NAR wiring diagram, and unfortunately it's not very different from the ROW version.

BCM C19 never shows as the input for the dimmer. at this point I am stuck.

I am starting to think it might be something about BCM parameterization, or the hell I know.

I might soon have to give up.

As I have said, I have very little information other than the extract below from the BCM pin-out. I've tried searching for "T73c /19" in all my WD s - but no hits.

If you believe that 5V is needed then this can easily be generated in lots of ways

I tried the GFF with ODIS and I CANNOT see the dimmer value changing on the screen. this makes me believe that the dimmer is connected to the wrong pin.

now the interesting question is, why does VCDS show the value changing?

together with the help of a friend, we finally found the solution. he has a little test set that simulates a car network with some modules, including a BCM of course.

so we put my old MID BCM into the jig and did some testing. it's way easier on a bench than in the car.

BCM pin A55 is a 5V reference output, needs to be wired to pin 4, input of the dimmer.
pin 5 of the dimmer (wiper) is the regulated signal that feeds back into the BCM pin C19.
dimmer pin 3 is ground.

it works fine and the errors all cleared.

now, fun fact, it turns out I also have a bad dimmer. at some point I wanted to double check the internal wiring and I opened it. it was tricky and I remember accidentally bending the wiper.

so I'll buy another and replace it, but it will have to wait until December because I am flying on saturday.

I wonder why this wiring is not documented on any diagram, even on the NAR version, which is the only market that actually has the option.
I wish there was a way to tell VAG headquarters they have some wrong diagrams.

just a follow up, I definitely screwed up the dimmer when I opened it, so I bought a new (used) one, and I installed it a few days ago. all good and all errors are cleared.
