Good afternoon all, tried to follow instructions as close as possible for new posts. I'm seeking help as a means to learn the VCDS better and diagnose properly. Too busy fixing chevy trucks here in AR to work on my own stuff and learn by myself...need some training.

Car ran fine until recently. Noticed a loss of power and CEL came on for P310B. I know its a common problem but I'm not throwing parts at this. Vehicle came with AutoZone DElphi LPFP which has worked fine for 2 yrs. After code came on, they gave me a new fuel pump. Installed it and now the car only runs for about 10 min then shuts off. Then it becomes hard to start. If it does start, it will only run for a few minutes and shut down. If it sits until cool, it will restart & the process starts all over again.

I'm not replacing parts just bc they aren't OEM. I agreed to some degree aftermarket aren't the best, but that's not an excuse to replace parts...I want to learn this system and actually diagnose this problem. I need to prove a bad part as best as possible.

Are you seeing sensible live values for Fuel Pressure in Measuring Blocks?
If you click the Advanced Measuring Values button, it should show a list of live data offered and hopefully you can find fuel pressure listed.

Your MAF fault may also be responsible for the engine cutting out.

I agree with the MAF issue causing same problem. I slaved in a known good one and came up with same result.
blk 106
field 1 = 50 bar at idle
field 2 = 83.1 at idle. I know that is high. thinking bc its a delphi pump.
after shut down and a heat soak I drop to 3 bar in field 1.

blk 140 hpfp
field 3 = 50 bar

blk 230 field 3 = deviation .01-1
high side seems to be fine

I had the VCDS hooked up when it died this last time but don't know to how retrieve that data...

maybe I need to look at the MAF after it cools down again instead of fuel pressure...i'm not eliminating that as the culprit...It acted the same way the last time it went bad.

btw, I'm trying to get the erWin data but cant seem to figure out how to download the manual I need or get a price for the subscription...

From your post, it sounds like you may have already seen the Ross-Tech Wiki page on this but here is the link for reference:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/2.0l_TFSI_(AXX/BGB/BPJ/BPY/BWA)#Special_Functions

If you have already tried a different MAF, you can probably rule that out for the moment. Did the MAF fault code go away when you fitted the borrowed sensor?

Before the Fuel Pump was changed, the car ran ok but just threw up pressure faults, is that correct? Or did it have the same cutting-out symptoms as now?

OP: Can you clear fault codes and re-post the new auto-scan & with additionally the OBD2 data MODES 1-01, 3, 7 & 9 please?

OP: Have you checked to be sure the integrated FPR in fuel filter is working as specified with new lift pump & for volume using mechanical tests such as gauges and V-metric confirmed delivery?

OP: Did you check the fuel module control unit for proper function ground and ability carry AMP load capacity to lift pump & did you measure the duty cycle with DVOM or observe in VCDS?

OP: Is the mechanical HPP in proper order & stroke of lifter or cam ramp correct?

I did follow that guide and took notes of pressure settings waiting for the engine to die and hopefully capture the cause. The MAF code came on bc I started the engine with the MAF connector disconnected after swapping it and didn't erase it.

So the engine ran ok but at lower power than normal. Stage 2 on this engine is like a bull out of the gates, it began to accelerate slower and took longer to get up to speed. It never cut out though.

Ok...first off, Im having no luck getting a service manual for this car. Andy (Rosstech) confirmed to me this morning that Bentley has been superseded by erWin (and doesn't provide good data on the FSI engine) and I cant figure out the website to get the troubleshooting data I need. I'm continuing efforts to get that data...

I will try to start engine, clear codes and repost data requested. Not sure about the OBD2 data modes requested. I'll search for those.

I haven't taken FPFP off yet bc I'm pulling data first. Its on my visual check list though.

I have not checked the FPR in the filter yet. I have not checked volumetric efficiency bc I don't have tech data to tell me what to expect.

VCDS showed 83.1 duty cycle at idle if that's what you're asking.

Jack, I did read your post about FOD in the ecu...I will do an inspection of the part. I've done plenty of FOD walks on the flight line keeping our B52s flying.

Its on my visual check list though.

Nein! Measure using the RTFB & proper tools + specs .....not just a visual!

RTFB can be had here and yes indeed the website works!

Jack, I did read your post about FOD in the ecu...I will do an inspection of the part. I've done plenty of FOD walks on the flight line keeping our B52s flying.

Awesome...... thank you very much!

I'm sure the erWin site works...I just cant figure out how to create a log in to get the data. No data means nein on the technical inspection of the HPFP and associated parts.

getting back from some life issues...
I decided to check voltage from the FPCM to the fuel pump itself and found 8 volts at idle and 8.5 volts and full throttle. Has anyone ever tested the FPCM in this manner? Couldn't find a proceedure in the Bentley. Additionally, the FPCM is getting 12v from applicable fused source. Not sure of the exact science of the FPCM, but 8 volts feeding a 12v motor sure does seem to lower fuel pressure. Comments...

What did you test it with? Without checking my guess is that this could be PWM that needs testing with a scope.

since the fuel pump operates on DC voltage I used an analog and digital voltmeter. A scope would be nice but I don't have one yet. I have since replaced the FPCM and my voltage went up to 8.3V at idle and 8.7 full throttle.

WTF are you thinking, does your DVOM support PWM or TRIG/MS, because some do?

Pulse Width Modulation...............

Injector works same way!

Better watch some how too's!

Hi Grant,

Maybe you can help me decipher these fuel values.
Engine runs for 10 minutes then shuts off. All readings are at idle bc I can't rev engine and read blocks at same time.

On initial start up blk 103 = 1.62 bar, 4000 FPR, 1720 ADAPT, OK STATUS
blk 106 = 50.6 bar, 83.1% pump,
blk 140 = 50.6 bar for actual rail pressure

10 later... engine slowly dies
blk 103 = 1.63 bar, 4K, 2237, OK
blk 106 = 2.6 bar, 83.5%
blk 230 = 49.9 bar specified, 2.6 bar actual, 47 bar difference.

So, my fuel pressure in block 103 should be about 6 bar (as I understand it) but the rail pressure still runs about 50 bar initially.
As the engine dies, blk 103 stays the same but blk 106 rail pressure drops to 2.6 and this is too low to keep the engine running.

Isn't the fuel rail pressure controlled by the FPR on the HPFP?

What do I need to look at next?

There are two pressures. The low-pressure supply from the tank, which is controlled by the duty cycle to the electric transfer pump. Then there is the high pressure rail. This is produced by the mechanical high pressure pump and controlled by the FPR. If the rail pressure is dropping off, it could be a problem with the high pressure pump, or the FPR.

A key thing to observe with FP volume and pressure regardless of HPP or Lift type pumps okay?

As fuel PSI increases, over all flow or capacity decreases, did you know that?

Did you know you can have "air pressure" with nil or no fuel flow and is why volume tests of fuel expelled and measured is mandatory?

Did you know when observing the duty cycle and over all PSI readings of a fuel rail or FPR, they should be used as a guide in VCDS and cross checked to mechanical actual tests, have you done them yet?

You are playing with a modified car with FOD!

Ever consider the reason to do mechanical's first versus rely on such scanner readings and because "someone" might change the base table math to report in the diagnostic stack dictionary, a false number to evade a DTC table and while reporting fake MVB in actual calculated values you maybe observing & to make themselves look less devious than they want people to see?

Mechanical tests and compare of files always shows the FOD even if well hidden!

Uwe, I do understand there are 2 fuel systems in this fuel system. My concern is with blk 103. Bentley states the lift pump should be 6 bar. Mine isn't getting over 2 bar while at idle. The high side is within spec the first 8 min of running, then the high side drops off while the low side is a steady 1.6 bar.

My theory is that the fuel rail is full and pressurized on start up. As the engine consumes fuel, the lift pump isn't supplying the needed volume to keep up with the demand. So when the rail gets low on volume the pressure drops off gradually until it dies.

Jack,
I do understand Pascals principal. 21 yrs of hydraulic work on USAF aircraft, I've learned some things. Pressure and flow are inversely proportional. I unfortunately don't have the mechanical fuel pressure tester to test this system. I've considered quite a few thing but I'm stuck with using the tools I own and can afford to justify. I understand your love of FOD based on your posts. The car was running fine for 2 yrs before this issue came up.

Checked the fuel filter?

+1 doesn't it have a combined regulator too? :p

OP: Have you checked to be sure the integrated FPR in fuel filter is working as specified with new lift pump & for volume using mechanical tests such as gauges and V-metric confirmed delivery?

A regular fuel PSI gauge is not very expensive in comparison to parts costs is it?

Are smooth line pinch pliers that far off on budget?

With your USAF experience couldn't you fabricate a cheap homemade gauge set for HPP?

Thank you for your service to the Country by the way........
