2010 Phaeton - Big Electrical Issues - VCDS not clearing faults

Not too sure what happened but, the car will not start and the VCDS will not clear the error codes. Pretty sure the ECU is working as I can hear noises when trying to start the car. Any advice gratefully accepted.

Lots of things in the car are unresponsive to diagnostics, but only the transmission controller is actually offline totally. Hmm.

Let's check the simple things first:

             Freeze Frame:
                    RPM: 0 /min
                    Speed: 0.0 km/h
                    Load: 0.0 %
                    Voltage: 11.17 V

That's very low. Check the state of BOTH batteries, and then place a charger on them if you can. You can get in a situation where the cabin electronics mostly work, but the engine just can't crank, if the left-side battery (vehicle power supply) is low and the right one (starting) is kaput. The Phaeton has a paralleling relay and some other emergency starting logic to help, but often that just hides a problem until it gets really bad. A MY2009 car with the factory batteries would be well overdue.

Apologies for being pedantic here, but based on the VIN, this is a 2010 car (which of course doesn't preclude it having been made and even registered in 2009). But since Model Year is what's most important when it comes to diagnostics, I've fixed the thread title. :cool:

Not old enough that they should be bad at this time, but not new enough that they're "known good". I'd pull them and load-test them individually.

It's gotten considerably worse since your last scan. That is not consistent with a healthy battery that was on a decent charger for any length of time. Do you have a multimeter? Can you check each battery directly with the car shut off? Phaetons do have some common issues, like water intrusion into the KESSY security module, but the voltage here is just too low to even go down that road yet.

It's on again, off again. I've had some original (i.e. came with the car when new) batteries last 6-8 years, but I've also seen some fail at 2 years.

Well sure but does this count, when the statistics show themselves at a 2 year lease auction & where almost every battery is dead or requiring a jump start by the "lane starter" & of over 500 cars per show? :rolleyes:

Hi Guys, thank you so much for your support and I had to get an Auto Electrician to sort out the issue as it was past my ability. He said that the gear lever was not communicating with the steering column and needed re-mapping. The car is working now and lessons learned are;
If it's working, don't go looking for issues
Don't play around with fuses
