Hi, 've finished my TPMS retrofit some weeks ago but I'm looking for some help because I still couldn't make it display the tyre pressure screen on MMI. The system seems to be partially working since it can correctly get pressures and temperatures from the sensors and generates alerts when there's some tyre below pressure. Diagnostic scans with VCDS show that pressures and wheel positions recived by the TPMS module are accurate.

Problem is, instead of displaying the direct TPMS scren with the tyre diagram, MMI displays the "store tyre pressures" screens, as if I was using indirect TPMS.

Of course, I've disabled indirect TPMS as part of the coding process changing bytes 27 and 28 on ABS module changed from 3882 to 0802 (back to what it was originally coded from factory).

I though it might be related with some wrong coding for Instruments ou Information Electronics, but I did some tests some time ago with another TMPS module from a Passat (P/N: 5Q0907273) and I did get the direct TPMS tyre pressure diagram on the MMI screen. Of course it didn't work properly (the Passat module doesn't handle temperatures, only pressures). So now I've tested that again and replaced the 8V module (P/N: 8S0907273) with the Passat unit without changing any coding. And then the direct tire pressure diagram appeared. Removing the Passat unit and reinstalling the 8V module, the diagram was no longer displayed and again I had only the indirect TPMS "store tyre pressures" screen. So I'm sure my MMI is able to display the right screen. The strange thing is that it displays the right screen with the wrong module, and the wrong screen with the right module.

Any ideas?

if i google the hardware number it comes up with a Q7 part but googling the software number comes up with an rs3/tt.

i've working TPMS on my 2015 A3 with 2017 MMI 2 high and part number is 5Q0907273B. I also got DJAlex to parameterize my module. Not sure if that helps at all.

What have you got in these two Adaptation Channels in the 5F-Infortainement module?

My module was parameterised in the UK by DJAlix too, then shipped to me so I could install it. The part number I used was correct, according to him. As far as I know, the module with part number 5Q0907273B wouldn't work well with the A3 8V because it doesn't handle tire temperatures, only pressures (when I tested it, the temperatures where always displayed as -60.0º) so I abandoned the tests with it. Is your TPMS displaying temperatures?

Since this is a retrofit, I'll ask: Which CAN bus is the TPMS module wired to?

I understand this question may sound silly, but we have seem instances of problems with retrofits because they were wired to the wrong bus.

After looking for a solution for nearly two months with no success I think no question is silly at this point. I connected the wires from the TPMS receiver to a pair of wires identified in Audi electrical diagrams as CAN bus ext. High (an orange/gray wire) and CAN bus ext. Low (orange/brown). Electrical connection seems to be OK as the module can be accessed by VCDS and it can generate alerts on the instrument cluster when there's something wrong with the tires. Also, as I told in my initial post, when I replace the module with the other one from the Passat, without changing any coding, the TPMS diagram begins to be shown normally, and the module is connected to the same bus.

TPMS-Direct came to A3-platform with RS3 and TTRS from 2017. I believe that Your MIB unit just doesn't handle the TPMS with temperature display with such new TPMS module.

I suppose the MMI is able to hande temperatures as it does shows fields for temperature display, only that they are filled with "-60.0º" when I install the Passat module. Do you think an older type of TPMS module would work better with my MIB? Any specific part number?

It makes sense. I was reluctating to believe those German engineers would design a MMI display with fields that could never be filled correctly.

Finally got it sorted. After talking to people in this Forum who tried to help I've found out that there's no easy way to make the MMI1 display tire temperatures. Parts suppliers in China and Europe also said it's not possible and that the 5Q0 module makes the TPMS screen to be displayed, but without the temperatures, and the 8S0 module handles temperatures but it only displays the screen on MMI2. But since there were temperature fields in the MMI1 screen, I supposed that they were designed to be filled one way or the other, so I began to analyse the CAN bus signals transmitted from and to the 8S0 TPMS module until I found a set of messages that have to be suppressed and added in order to make the screen to be displayed. After many hours of reverse engineering the messages exchanged by both the 5Q0 and 8S0 modules, I built a filter module with an Arduino microcontroller and two CAN bus transceivers that I've inserted between the TMPS module and the car's extended CAN bus. The project is still unfinished and under development but today I got a fully working screen.

This is real engineering skills :) Nice to see some real effort put here.

Good work.

so if I replace the 5Q0 TPMS module with the 8S0 on a Golf7 with a MIB2 unit, I will also see tires temperature?

I don't think so. AFAIK, Golf TPMS screens in Golf7 don't have fieds for tire temperature in neither MIB1 or MIB2 units. Instead, they display specified pressures along with current pressures. Also, while in Golf you have a table of tire sets with standard pressures for each, in Audi you don't have any tables. Instead, you have a "reset" function that allows the owner to store as standard the current pressures of the tires. That's why the 5Q0 parameter data hold a table with up to 11 tire sets and these data are sent from the ECU to the multimedia through a series of CAN Bus messages when the system is initiated. The 8S0 parameter data are much smaller and don't store these tables. That's why I think the 8S0 is not compatible with the way Golf TPMS works.
Why does a 5Q0 work in Audi with MIB1? I think it wasn't supposed to do so and that's why the MMI screen has temperature fields that the 5Q0 doesn't supply. Also, Audi MIB1 TPMS menus don't have any tire set selection screen and the reset function doesn't seem to change anything on the system settings. I guess that the MIB1 TPMS in the Audi A3/S3 8V was originally designed to be compatible with a planned version of the 4M0 module (8S0 is a software version of 4M0) that was never released and the project was abandoned. It was only implemented "officially" with the MIB2.

BTW, 19 ECUs? I'm impressed. What did you retrofit in your Golf? I can't even imagine what those 6 additional ECUs are.

thanks for letting me know. actually direct TPMS just don't officially exist on the Golf, but since it's MQB platform and the Passat has it... I don't know much more, when retrofitting I just followed a step-by-step guide.

to answer the 19 ECUs question, I will soon post a final autoscan in the NON BROKEN VEHICLES section. stay tuned.

@ Ronaldo

I have a friend with an A3 who installed the same TPMS and of course is not seeing temperatures. we would like to replicate your CAN gimmick if you are willing to disclose/share hardware and source code. thanks!

I will be pleased to share the details of the project. You must have in mind that it's still not a perfect solution, since it's a reverse engineering job triyng to figure out what messages a TPMS module made for the MIB1 would send if it existed. I've improved it a lot since the first version and it's working much better (earlier versions sometimes generated spurious "TPMS malfunction" errors on the cluster display) but there are still some issues:
- I still couldn't make temperatures to be displayed on the MMI screen immediately, sometimes they appear on the MMI after driving for a long time, sometimes I have to turn off the ignition and turn it on again.
- VCDS and other diagnostic tools can't reach the TPMS ECU. Probaby some specific diagnostic messages are not being properly relayed by the circuit. That's why I installed a bypass switch in the filter box so I can bypass the circuit when I want to run diagnostics on the module.
- when a "reset tire pressures" is needed (after you fix a flat tire or some other pressure loss), the TPMS module is taking a long time to resume sending pressure data to the can bus. I still have no idea why.
I'm currently working on these issues. The current project uses an Arduino Nano (Atmega 328 at 16MHz) but I plan to test with faster boards because the Atmega is not fast enough to forward all the messages to the ECU without having some loss. The Canbus extended to which the ECU is connected works at 500kbps and transmits hundreds of messages per second and the TPMS ECU signals the "TMPS malfunction" error if it doesn't receive a set of 4 specific messages regularly, so I've programmed it to forward only the 4 messages, plus the "Einheit" message (which informs the ECU which measurement units to use) and all the Extended ID messages (which will likely contain the BAP messages). It reduced the load on the microcontroller dramatically, so the loss of messages is no longer an issue.

Parts are very cheap. Basically the Arduino Nano, two Canbus shields and a voltage regulator to get 5V from the car's 12V.

For the voltage regulator, I've removed one from a spare cigarette lighter socket charger, so it costed me nothing.

Of course, you will probably need a plastic box, wires, solder, tools, etc. I've connected my project to a set of male/female 8E0971934 connectors (same type as the TPMS module) so I could easily remove and reinsert the box in the circuit without cutting/splicing wires, but it's not necessary if you don't plan to remove it frequently as I did when I was developing the project. For the bypass switch, I've used a sliding 4P2T switch, very useful to allow diagnostics or to remove the filter from the circuit if something fails.

I'm sure I've taken some pics of the circuit before mounting it in the box. I can post it as soon as I find them. If you and your friend are interested after reading this, please send me a pvt message.
