I have a 2008 2.0T A4 Quattro which showed a check engine light two days ago. The A4 seems to be running well, but I cannot gain access to the OBD-II fault codes, and when I run a diagnostic none of the engine addresses are read. All other addresses are read normally and there is no data that indicates what might be wrong.

Any Ideas??? Best Binsu

You're presumably doing this with VCDS-Mobile?

What happens if you just do [Select] -> [01-Engine]?

Shaun had a 2008 A4 2.0T for several years while working on the HEX-NET and VCDS-Mobile. So I'm pretty confident it should work. :)

My A4q is a 2.0TFSi too, however it is the CDNC engine and I believe on your side of the pond, you have the CAEB. My HN works flawlessly wired with a USB cable, Access Point with VCDS, and stand-alone with VCDS-Mobile.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen VCDS logs with the CAEB, but not sure of CAEB with VCDS-Mobile.

Yes, I'm using VCDS mobile, and I will try to select. But, I still cannot access the OBD-II data to find out what codes are being thrown.

I have been unable to even access the OBD-II fault codes, and all of the other addresses output results. One anomaly I noticed is that some engine data appeared for a split second when I first started the diagnostic, but immediately disappeared. Thanks, Binsu

If you go to [Select] -> [Engine] -> [Functions] -> [Fault codes] do you see anything?

Dear Uwe, I tried that and the HEX-NET makes three attempts to initiate the K-line and will not load any address from 01 through 07. OBD-II data is unavailable. However, the Check Engine Light [CEL] has gone off.

My son drives the car, so I have no first hand knowledge of the conditions under which the CEL will light, and there were no apparent symptoms that I could hear, see or feel. There could have been a possibility that either the oil filler cap or the gas cap may have been loose. He got fuel yesterday and the light is off now.

However, it is disconcerting that I am unable to diagnose this particular A4. I do know that Audi can read the engine codes and addresses 01 through 07.

This is frustrating and puzzling. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Best, Binsu

It sounds like you might have problems with one of the klines. Does this car have an aftermarket radio? Plugged into car, what does [Options] -> [Self Test] show for K1 and K2 status? Can you post a whole autoscan so we can see what is and is not talking?

Except on a 2008 US model A4 , the ECU will be on CAN, as is 02-Auto Trans (if it has one), and 03-ABS. Furthermore, the powertrain CAN is brought directly to pins 6 and 14 on the DLC, and there is no Gateway. I wonder if he's got a problem with the wiring to those pins.

Oh right, so this is like my old car. What does [Options] -> [Self Test] show for CAN status, with engine running? If it shows "Testing" you might have a problem with the wiring to the DLC, like Uwe said, because there should definitely be CAN traffic on the port.

OK, Shaun, I'll go out and run a complete autoscan, and I will try the Options -> Self Test for K1 and K2. BTW, this car does not have any aftermarket equipment installed anywhere. I'll be back soon.

Yep, which is why I'm pretty confident it should work, despite being quite odd in terms of how it works. ;)

Shaun, here is the entire scan. Addresses 01 through 07 did not read. The self test read:

Dear Uwe, please see the scan data I sent to Shaun. BTW the CAN reads as not ready, but Audi seems to be able to read the 01 through 07 addresses, and on some occasions I can read those addresses. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, the 01 was seen momentarily on the first scan, but no data was saved or appeared on the scan output.

The 01-Engine, 02-Auto Trans and the 03-ABS have all been read at one time or another.

The following is from a time that I was able to read addresses 01, 02, and 03:

In the scan two posts up, everything that talks in on K-Line, and everything that doesn't is on CAN.

"CAN Not Ready" could be a lack of connection to the car's CAN bus, possibly dodgy pins in the car's DLC, or a wiring problem in the car, or it could be some sort of internal failure in the HEX-NET.

I think the only way to sort this out is process of elimination. What other cars do you have available that you can plug the HEX-NET into?

Dear Uwe,

Well, I got side tracked and didn't get a chance to try the HEX-NET on the other Audi, a 2015 A4 Quattro Prestige until two days ago. The HEX-NET did read the CAN bus. It did take a bit of time for the CAN bus to be ready, but all of the addresses were read.

Can you suggest a protocol for trouble shooting the inability the HEX-NET to read the CAN bus on my 2008 A4?

I tried the HEX-NET on the other Audi, a 2015 A4 Quattro Prestige, and the HEX-NET did read the CAN bus. If I'm trouble shooting the cars OBD-II bus at pins 6 and 14, how would I be able to do that and what readiness should I expect to get?

Would you have a photo of the OBD-II connector showing which pins 6 & 14 are?

Thank you,
Binsu
