I was helping out to find out why this poor V6 ASN engine is misfiring BADLY on bank 2. With engine idling, cylinders 4-5-6 generate misfirings faster than I can read them out. Bank 1 cylinders 1-2-3 stay at zero. Has new coils and plugs. No other fault codes than misfires (see scan at bottom). Runs very rough and won't rev, undriveable at the moment.

When looking at fuel trim and lambda control, I found out that other bank is rich while other is lean. But what bothers me, is fuel trim. Yes, they go to zero when DTC memory is cleared. But below are readings after more than 15 minutes of idling, they are still at zero. Just out of curiosity, what possible reasons are there for this? Or is this normal? So far every time I have seen mixture issues, the idle adaptation starts to creep away from zero immediately after DTC clear, when engine is running.

We did of course try shutting off lambda control to see if that helps engine run better (did not help) but after that, ignition was cycled several times and still all zero fuel trims.

I am aware that there are numerous possibilities that cause misfiring on these engines. One of them is cam timing. Can anyone verify if readings below look to be okay? I think they are within specs, but I have very little knowledge of this.

Sadly, the current owner has just bought the car (in "as is" condition) and has very little knowledge of history. Only certain things are, that plugs and coils have been replaced. One thing that popped out, that could there be a blocked catalytic converter causing this...? Exhaust pipes seem to go separately all the way to the back, so a blockage on the other side would affect only one bank..?

We'll see if the owner gets the exhaust pipe inspected for blockage. But my main question at the moment is that fuel trim sitting at zero behaviour. Is it normal in this situation or does it indicate something?

Well, the main problem of misfiring was solved quickly. A little "inspection hole" to the exhaust system and... It works. Car can be driven again. Catalytic converter is pretty much toasted and blocking the exhaust.

It's normal for your situation -- fuel trim won't update during misfire events.

Well, should have guessed that, thanks for the clarification!
