Good morning, i've just received my HEX-NET VCDS hardware and am very excited to try my hand at this!

My first "repair" is to set a 2006 Bentley Continental GT back to its factory (North American) ride height. The car is much lower than even the Euro setting at the moment, i suspect a past owner cheated by mis-entering the suspension level adaptation values. The car currently measures 378mm both front/rear, the factory ride height is 395/394mm front/rear as per http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Bentley_Non_UDS_Level_Control

However when I follow the adaptation instructions laid out in this detailed procedure https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2055204 I cannot enter any value other than 395mm in the "new" field. Any other value will return "invalid" when I press test. The measured value is really 378mm, waaay off from where the car thinks it is.

KQ15rYv.png

Then to make this even more confusing, i cant even change the soft coding value from 0005561 to anything else (ideally 0007761), i get an out of range error. its like this module wont take any changes at all.

I have run an autoscan, and it shows no codes except for 34-level control (i caused this by terminating the adaptation before completion).

Hello,

Just wonder, how is the compressor? You should be able to reach and hold at least 6 bar of pressure (see Basic Settings Group [023])

I would start with the Basic Settings to manually raise the ride height to approximately where it needs to be. Then see if the system will allow you to complete the adaptations. This will also insure the compressor can perform as expected. Use the Security Access code [08367] for the Basic Setting Enabling.

You can access the Basic Settings raise and lower functions in the Pull-down menu, do this with the vehicle on a flat level surface and the engine running in a well ventilated area.

If this does not seem to help, you could also try the Ride Adaptations with values that are 5mm (or more) greater than what you are currently reading. That way the controller thinks the ride right is closer to the target ride height than it actually is and may allow the adaptation function to complete.

If that works, then perform the ride height again and see if it will accept the current readings, if not you will need to continue this 'stepped' approach to have the system eventually learn the correct or desired ride heights.

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Thanks for the suggestions Peter. The air pressure (i dont have a screenshot, from memory..) was about 10 bar. I'll give the basic settings a try. The car lowers/raises itself when i initialize the adaptation. So i know its functioning at least on some level.

Any insight on why i cant change the soft coding from XXX55XX?

The measured value is really 378mm, waaay off from where the car thinks it is.
IIRC, the "Stored Value" in these channels is always the height that the car should be at. It should not be construed as any kind of actual measurement.

Try changing those channels 5mm at a time.

Thanks Uwe.

The only values adaptation will accept are 393-395. I have tried changing all corners to 1mm lower than the "stored value" (from 395 to 394mm), that doesnt throw up any objections in VCDS. However after that if i run another adaptation the "stored values" are back to 395 all round.

-Alexander

-edit-

in hindsight, this behavior is probably normal. If the car wants to be at 395, the "stored value" wont change. I'll have to try 10 adaptations to see if i can move the level a measurable amount. If i was able to change the coding from xxx55xx to xxx77xx i would see the "stored value" change. (is that correct?)

Hi,

Since there are several different J197-Level Control controllers that are used in different vehicle types, the Coding Helper displays all of the know coding possibilities, however not all the coding possibilities that are listed in the Coding Helper will be not accepted by all controllers.

In fact, after a little research, (searching through all the Bentley and other Auto-Scans) I have found the coding value of [0005561] is the only one that is used in the 34-Level Control for the 3W-Bentley. So at this time, it does not appear to be a coding issue.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, could you post the ride height measurements for all four corners you see at the beginning of the 'Suspension Level Control Calibration' procedure? This is thee point where you are about to enter your first value.

One last thing.... You are following this procedure too, right? Suspension Level Control Calibration We also have a Video that will help, just in case you have not seen it. ;)

Thanks for digging deeper into this drpeter!

That's good to know 0005561 is the only possible coding, im not going crazy!

The measured ride height is:
Front right 378
Front left 379
Rear right 380
Rear left 378
(all +/- a couple of millimeters depending on how aggressively i've bounced the suspension)

Yes, i'm following your linked procedure to the letter. Is there any more diagnostic info i can screenshot that would be helpful?

These "objections" are not from VCDS, they are from the module itself.

I've seen a similar module in a 7L Touareg refuse to accept largish changes, which is why I recommended 5mm at a time, but I've never seen one only accept 1 or 2mm at a time, so that's bit puzzling.

In hindsight, this behavior is probably normal. If the car wants to be at 395, the "stored value" wont change. I'll have to try 10 adaptations to see if i can move the level a measurable amount.
Yes, I would expect 395 to be the stored value again each time.

If i was able to change the coding from xxx55xx to xxx77xx i would see the "stored value" change. (is that correct?)
Although those codings were documented by the factory at one point, I do have recollection that some modules would not allow them to be changed.

Drpeter, i attempted to use basic settings to manually raise/lower the ride height, however i didnt see any obvious raise/lower functions in the pull down menu.
dlBgGQB.jpg

i tried (gingerly) the front axle filling selection and pressed ON/OFF/Next, but i didnt see any reaction from the suspension. Are you able to provide some more direction?

Much appreciated

I have found that marking the level sensors for a timing basic location saving settings & to a suspicion component while referencing a sensor reading in VCDS or DVOM at sensor to triangulate and then tweaking them to the desired value to obtain the height, is just easier sometimes.

I also find this method easier for adaptions to be done versus running a pump to over heat it.

Ever think of finding a coupling nut and two jam nuts fabricated make for easy settings fast or for modified calculations to be achieved?

Reason I say this is maybe sensor locations are already altered with FOD!

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Had some front end work done but now the front sits low while the rear sits high. Can't change any values nor do the adaptation. Once I figure out how to post pictures I can post screen shots.
