2004 Passat B5.5 W8 M/T
Greetings, picked up a oddball wtf 8 cylinder 1 of 11 Silverstone Gray sedan Passat and having troublesome on a few codes.

First scan when I got home, and what I've done and think I might know, or not.

03: ABS Brakes-First start the car, sometimes but not always, the ABS and Traction Control lights are on. And sometimes they don't, until after a few minute, or begin driving. I've checked connections from left front all the way to inside wheel well. ABS wheel inside rotor has light surface rust. Cleaned and inspected sensor. (doesn't mean it's good though) Checked measuring blocks and all 4 wheels are reading same mph even with lights on. Engine light comes on 10-30 min of driving which I assume is related to front left ABS fault. Vehicle speed sensor has been replaced, but throws code as shown. Also, speedo is 5 mph fast by 3 different GPS devices. OEM rims and correct tire size in place.

08: Auto HVAC-Flaps work fine to any position I put them to. Clueless to the faults.

17: Instruments, 19: CAN Gateway, 75: Telematics No label?-Throwing different faults because it's an aftermarket Kenwood DDX372BT. Not much to do about that, correct? Would rather have original Monsoon.

36: Seat Mem. Drvr - Seat(s) work fine in all positions.

55: Headlight Range - Most likely a frayed, bare wire touching inside the housing due to hotter than hell xenon and insulation age. Common VAG problem that I've yet to pull front clip and headlights to inspect and most likely heat shrink and polish lens to new.

Any advice or direction is greatly appreciated on these issues. It's a great car that got bad reviews because of the W8, but with 3" duals straight back from cats and a 6-spd m/t to boot, it's different and a blast to drive. Reviews anyways are like 1.8's and 2.8's. Everyone has one, even me.

Also, can't seem to pull up the Gateway list. It's like, not there.

A W8 with 6MT? Awesome!

There was a guy on Vortex way back when with one. He had the sig, "My car will pass anything, except a gas station". :D

I'd start with the ABS wheel speed sensor. That's either a bad sensor, or a break in the wiring.

HAVC: Have you run Basic Settings? Should be Group 001.

As for a Gateway Installation List: This is a B5. It's late 1990's tech, diagnostics all via K-Line. Looking for a Gateway Installation list here is like looking for acceleration from an old Prius; it simply doesn't have it.

-Uwe-

PS: Are you familiar with this flow chart?

I'll check HVAC tmrw along with swapping L+R sensors to see what I get. Wanting to clean ABS wheel anyhow. I've read that will throw a fault because of rust, but they all rust!

LOL! Yes, so I've read. But with receipts from last two owners as thick as King James version I'm in the clear, for now. Relieved it's not a tip. Horror stories on the torque converter. And, some nice fella had chains/guides/water pump/thermostat done. Was told twice, but only have proof for most recent. And this small bonus, along with OM. That price tho.
Sorry, couldn't get image code to work.

Fault says to check level sensor at "rear axle" not the headlight.

Wait, what? They stuck a level arm sensor on the rear? I only know about the one in front left. Thought it was referring to motor mechanism arms inside housing. Had that problem with my A6 C6 and it was inside housing.

To sense the attitude (nose up, level, nose down) of the car needs level sensors at both front and rear - with only 1 sensor all you can sense is ride height.

Even my 2000MY Audi S3 had level sensors front & rear for Xenon aim adjustment, so it's not a new thing.

update

Update..

Narrowed the ABS problem down to a bad module. Sent it off to Matt at cheapabs and had it back within 5 days. Reinstalled, recoded per RT Wiki along with steering angle. All good! No error lights except what I'm seeing in scan. ESP works as well. Car runs amazing and strong after the module being fixed. But what I don't understand is why it ran weird when those errors were lit? RPM's were odd when shifting and I couldn't get over 5k rpm's. My buddy who has wrenched for years tells me the ABS has nothing to do with how the engine runs, but I find that hard to believe.

And yes, rear sensor arm was broke for headlights. Fixed and relearned headlights. One is somewhat brighter than the other so I would suspect a not matched D2, plus the tiny DRL's are out. Pulling clip to pull them for a renew so I'll know more once I do this. They've been like this since I picked up the car in FEB. Lights are the same in DRL or turned on. Are the xenons suppose to be on in DRL and somewhat softer on the W8's?

Did the basics on HVAC and down to just the two errors. When you first turn key, you can hear them positioning themselves. They seem to work tho, so not sure what the deal is.

Thanks for the continued support. The knowledge on here is first to none.

The ABS will absolutely run interference with TQ request limitations if module is bad from bad solder joints.
An easy way to see is just unplug it to isolate on the network when such things are experienced.
I have seen an ignition switch or poor ground do similar things with ABS too.
